I'm sure many are tired of hearing about it, but the official word is now out.

I talked to the owner this afternoon, and the Capitols are done in Lincoln. Everything HAS been moved to St. Joseph and they plan to play the remaining home games there.

This move was orchestrated by the League President.

A couple of hours north of Kansas City on I-29.

I don't know about the logo or name, but they very well could use the equipment and name from the APFL St. Joseph team. I believe they are taking over that team and it's probably a lot better off in the uniform and equipment area.

But, that I don't know for sure.

The American Professional Football League is a Midwest-based indoor football league. They've been around since 2003, when there were at least three teams -- the Kansas Koyotes, Missouri Minutemen & St. Joseph Explorers. I believe the Koyotes were slated to join the NIFL, but backed out and instead formed their own league, the APFL. Interestingly enough, the Explorers would play several exhibition games in the NIFL when one of their teams, the River City Renegades, folded mid-season. I also believe that the Wichita Aviators are somehow connected to the former Wichita Stealth, who played in AF2.

The Aviators were formed by the Stealth GM after the owner of the Stealth went belly up and new investors couldn't be found. Last I heard, the Storm is still its own organization (they were a traveling team last season based out of Overland Park).
If I were the APFL, I'd be in Lincoln in a heartbeat. It would be a good place for one of the two traveling teams (the Wildcats and Extreme). It would solidify Iowa and St. Joe.
Lincoln would also be a good UIF city to go with the Beef.
The only problem would be the marketing job needed to bring back the fans that abandoned one of the worst indoor franchises in the past few seasons. (Winless last year except for a forfeit over another folded franchise and given up close to 200 points this season.)

What a mess, eh?

Unfortunately, it's probably someone's intention to have the two teams at odds with each other.

I feel for the players and coaches caught in the middle, from both ends.

Indeed, and a mess with no discernible reason. St. Joe will have less lead time to sell tickets and sponsorships than Lincoln did. The NIFL's aim may have been to keep the schedule as intact as possible, but that's already out the window with Palm Beach.

Pitbullw, how many people were at the game and who coached for Lin/St Joe?

Including the players in attendance that quit before the game, there were no more than 60-70 people there. Could've possibly been due to the 1.5 hour delay due to still laying the turf down.

Pitbull, I'm not aware of Herm being in attendance. Nonetheless if he was, how would he know how good the initial St. Joe team was compared to this one if he's never seen them play either? By the way, were you aware Billings didn't play 6 starters last night?

NIFL box score reporting a little over 1,200 to the game...I think it'd be more like 120

That's the word on the street here in Saint Joseph. We'll find out at the game tonight for sure though.

Actually it is official I would say. From today's News-Press in St. Joe:

Indoor football franchise must change name
By CLINTON THOMAS

The fans who turned out for the Capitols opening football game at Civic Arena on Monday may have felt cheated.

Most of the players were from Lincoln, Neb., not St. Joseph. In fact, all but three of the local players had to sit out the game due to a lack of equipment, leaving local fans of the new National Indoor Football League franchise with little of their own to rally around.

That changes tonight.

“We have sent the Lincoln players back to Lincoln, and the Storm players will be the ones taking the field,” team owner Jessica Jagerson said. “We felt like the city of St. Joseph would not support a team of out-of-town players.”

The Capitols’ name left with the Lincoln players, but the team cannot return to the Storm nickname due to patent infringement issues.

So what should fans call their team?

“We don’t really have a name for them now,” Jagerson said. “We’re going to try and decide on a name that the players like. Then, the NIFL has to get together and vote to approve a name.”

The choice made weeks ago to switch leagues was even bigger than any decision on naming the team. Rumors swirled that some players did not favor the switch, which brought back bad memories of the old St. Joseph Explorers.

“They were nervous about being able to compete, and that when we brought in the Lincoln players, they might not have a spot,” Jagerson said. “We explained the pros of this and the pros of that, and I think they feel a little better about it now that the Lincoln players are gone.”

Players get many benefits in the NIFL that were unavailable before, such as full workers’ compensation, better pay, and general liability insurance for the entire organization.

The local players are back, the equipment issues solved, but fans that attended Monday’s game surely have one more question.

Will the game start at 7:35 p.m. as scheduled?

“The turf is already down, and the walls are already up,” Jagerson said. “If we don’t get this one started on time, there’s something wrong with us.”

The UIF has their eye on putting a team back in Lincoln. It would be good for the Sioux Falls, Sioux City, and Omaha teams that already exist.
