NEW Basketball League Should Be Formed in the Southeast & Atlantic Coast

What do you think about starting up a NEW REGIONAL LEAGUE where membership is drawn from the following states?

Florida
Georgia
Alabama
Mississippi
Louisiana
Arkansas
Louisiana
Kentucky
Tennessee
South Carolina
North Carolina
Virginia
West Virginia
Maryland

Why not draw upon the Basketball Heritage of these states ... to establish a league that truly represents ...

I'm struck with the following thoughts:

The basketball legacy you speak of was primarily formed by the college teams in this region. SO, when the NBDL was formed there, guess what happened? The fans are following the source of the legacy, not the next few things that tumble in (which seems to include NBA teams as often as not). The few exceptions (Rim Rockers) prove the rule.

Where are the basketball minors most successful? The Dakotas? Maybe Rochester and Arkansas, though both franchises are young, which only goes to show that counting on Year 1 attendance in Year 3 is almost always perilous. Anyway, I'm generally not talking about basketball hotbeds here, but something close to fresh slates. Funny that...

I'm working on it but I need time... :P

Build slowly, high school/college gyms, summertime, modest budget, don't expect the world overnight and for God's sake don't delay deadlines on expansion. Set a date and stick with it. If it takes an extra year, so be it.

Thanks for your comments Pounder!

Credibility as a Minor-League, IMO, is the most immediate challenge and #1 goal to establish!

I would Like to see the following markets within the State of Alabama establish teams within the league:

Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Auburn.

Jesus!!!!!!!!! NO MORE LEAGUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ENUFF!! Quit screwing the players, quit screwing the sponsors, quit screwing the FANS!!!! These league "Owners" and "Franchise owners" are nothing but two bit liars and frauds who give the minor leagues a horrible name and have nothing more then $110 in their bank account. Newman runs his league on less the $1,000 and look what it has done to so many lives. 99.9% of these league owners and franchise owners (with the exception of the CBA, NBDL and USBL)are broke with a 300 credit rating and the rest are ex-felons and convicts!!! GIVE IT UP!!! NO MORE LEAGUES!!!!! The failure rate is 100%%%%%%%%!!!! Let the USBL, the CBA and the NBDL do their thing, the rest of you go away and quit screwing honest people!!!!

Tha fans don't WANT any more leagues, doesn't the LONG list of league corpses say anything??? But every year or every month it seems, some one has an idea for a new "concept" on what will work and and with their limited knowledge and a few hundred $$$ in the bank they form a league....hoping...PRAYING some moron will come along who wants to think they are George Steinbrenner. Then loe and behold....they fail! Lack of fans, lack of coverage, lack of sponsors and another one bites the dust. Get real. The NBDL is barely making it, how can some moron with a full time job somewhere else form a league with no money and try an compete? they can't? How much more data do you need? How many more towns and cities have to get screwed? How many more players have to spend money on "try-outs" and get bilked? How many more sponsors are to get fleeced?Where does this end? Joe Newman is the worst of the worst, we don;t need another league!!!! PLEASE for everyone's sake and what is left of minor league hoops. Let the CBA, USBL and NBDL do their thing and keep whatever credibility minor league hoops has left.

Some serious comments mcm2667 ...

Believe me ... A lesson has been learned with how the American Basketball Association has been run ... and ineffectiveness of the league's business plan and operational guide.

The CBA and USBL are great leagues ... But they may not be in the position to extend their focus and expansion outward to the Southeastern & Atlantic Coast regions.

Looking at the NBDL ... A very small % of the markets in the Southeastern & Atlantic Coast regions have that major league ownership mindset, the required capital investment and the management/marketing expertise to run an NBDL operation.

It will be interesting to follow the WBA this year to see how that league performs?!

As all larger than life projects are when they begin ... just a micro-idea bouncing around in the mind ... it takes time to develop ... and in the end ... if it's worth the pursuit ... then why not take the opportunity to do something special!

The ABA is a joke, but a few of their teams have turned a profit, name two CBA or NBDL teams that will make money this year.

I'm very curious as to the ABA teams that you say have turned a profit. Which ones can you confirm have finished in the black - as well as finished the complete season (meeting all obligations, travel to away games, paying for opponent housing, etc.)?

I am more than aware of the operating and financial issues for teams in the ABA. And yes, Rochester has been a model franchise, and most likely in the black.

The issue is that many teams cut corners and stop paying essential bills to lessen the hemorrhage of cash out of their pockets. Also, consider that those teams that do create a positive cash situation are often burdened with having to pay for the travel and ancillary costs of other teams. They do it to preserve the sanctity of their home schedule (a team drawing 3000 a game will do all it can to ensure their home games are played), but those unexpected costs can eat away the profit margin; unless, of course, the league office were to follow through and re-imburse those teams that lay out the money in the first place [insert laugh track here]...

Hey, I take exception to the ABA being the worst run league. That honor goes to the AAPBL, which made players pay a $1,000 tryout fee for a two-week camp and then folded when the owner spent all of that money.

After that fiasco, then we can put the ABA on the list in it's proper place -- the second worst run pro basketball league.
