"As many as five new teams could be tipping off with the National Basketball League of Canada in its second season of operation.
Ownership groups in five Ontario cities had their formal applications for expansion franchises submitted by Thursday’s soft deadline for proposals of interest.
The groups — in St. Catharines, Mississauga, Ottawa, Windsor and Kitchener — have until June 15 to finalize arena lease agreements and other arrangements and fork over a $50,000 refundable deposit.
It will then be up to the league to decide how much it wants to expand for the 2012-13 campaign.
Andre Levingston, the league’s president and CEO, had said earlier this month that there was no preferred number going forward for the NBL in Year 2.
He reiterated Thursday that the league could proceed with just one expansion team if that’s deemed most appropriate. But he said it could also accept all five prospective expansion franchises."
