Rather than start new threads for each news item, or player signing, I've started this thread to discuss the Dayton Silverbacks - and for people to post news and information regarding the team..

Well, his brother *is* head coach there. This probably shouldn't shock anyone.

My guess is thats the only reason the guy is head coach. This is a complete joke just like daytons organization. Pick a guy whos coaching experiance is coaching Wrs for a terrible college team. They will finish 4th.

I'm going to wait until I see them play a few games first before I start predicting where they'll finish..
I'd say I'm gonna wait until I see the various CIFL rosters but the truth is I won't know who 99% of the guys are..
But yeah before I predict where they'll finish, I'm gonna wait until they play a game first.

As opposed to a defensive line coach in an offensive league? Sorry, "look how great the River Monsters line was!!!" doesn't really wash Thomas McKenzie and Luke Scarborough made up 2/3s of the line. It's not difficult to coach that up. Perhaps it was, though...the River Monsters had the UIFL's worst run defense (both in yards per carry and yards per game).
This is the CIFL. It's a great opportunity to give guys a shot who haven't had that shot before. Will every coach work out? Hard to tell. But even though I did rail on the Silverbacks for even mentioning that he coached at Kenyon, it's not like Goodpaster's resume is great.

wasnt really comparing goodpaster and askew on this occassion, was just saying it looked like they hired him because of his brother. I only talk Goodpaster up because Im friends with those dlineman you mentioned and they all said he was the best coach they had played for. These are accomplished guys who in these leagues most of the time dont even listen to there coaches, so to say these guys would be easier to coach is a little short sighted. Both players you mentioned had the best season of there careers for this guy, i believe that says something. Plus if you look at goodpasters resume that was on the old river monsters web site every place hes been from jr.high to high school to semi pro to pro hes always won, lot to be said for that. The same cannot be said of Mister askew. I hope they all do well i love going to the games was one of the 75 people at a couple chicago games last year, have traveled to dayton, marion and cincy for games over the last 2 years, i actually prefer they both succeed. Would also make for a intense rivalry because i think evansville owner used to work for dayton. That being said i believe dayton will be the better team this year but 2 or 3 years down the road i think you will see a big difference between the 2 coaches.

Yeah I saw that press release.
Difference is, I actually read it.
What Coach Askew said was that Stanford is a versatile player and will be given the opportunity to compete for the QB position.. but nowhere did it say that they signed him "2 be there Qb.LOL."
Based on the release it sounds like Stanford WANTS the chance to be the QB, but the coach was pretty clear that he's one of several people under consideration for the job.
My guess would be there'll be a competition for the job in training camp but I don't know that for sure. Someone could already be signed that has the inside track on the job... but due to injuries and whatnot, teams need more than 1 QB anyway.. sounds to me like Stanford has some abilities to help the team in a number of different ways and Askew will give him a look..
I don't see why anyone would hear about the Stanford signing and be that guy who goes "GEE LET'S GET THE CHAMPIONSHIP PARADE READY! WOW! WHAT A SIGNING! LOL."
Come on..

To Quote the Press Release
"our latest guy is one of the stand out signings they made."
“Chris is one of many QB’s from last year that will have the opportunity to play this year. Chris has been working hard to perfect his craft at the QB position. He has great potential to be a unique player.” (Mister Askew)
Sounds like the guy who wrote the article thinks he is going to be a big player. After all why do a press release for a back up player.

Same reason minor league sports teams put out a press release saying "Flippy The Fish Will Be At The Center Street Mall!"
That's just what teams do..

Because if a person that reads the presser had never before heard of the team, and as a result of it goes to a game because "hey, that sounds interesting," it was worth it for the free publicity.

While I agree you have to market your team and press releases are a excellent marketing tool. You want to put you're best foot forward when you hit the media with information.
That is why I find it silly (for the lack of a better term) to do a pressed about someone who should be your backup QB at best and someone who may not even make the roster.
Their other presses about repress was great and I applied them of that. I personally wouldn't do a presser unless the guy was a game changer. I wills hate for fans of my team to go, "this is the best they have to offer?"

Strongly disagree. Teams should promote and sometimes hype their signings. Hype those who have any kind of indoor rep, former NFL, UFL or CFL experience and those who excelled in college. But also put out a release on everyone else who gets signed. What's the advantage in keeping it to yourself? These teams need every last drop of attention they can earn. A slow news day may mean even a minor signing makes the paper or gets mentioned on a newscast.

Nice you feel that way. But you're still completely off-base.
At this level of sporting, you need to promote, promote, promote. When a player is signed, even if said player is buried on the depth chart, you get the word out. That player likely has some sort of local hometown media, be it a small local paper, or TV station. Get that release to folks like that, and that local media outlet might decide to run something on the local kid that just got inked to play for the team. Hey, look at that-- free pub!

This is exactly the point. Every signing of any guy with a remote chance to make the gameday roster should be trumpeted for that precise reason. Even if you don't think he's going to amount to much, you still trumpet it just in case he were to go lights-out and throw 50 touchdowns.
For those of you not familiar with the CIFL, 50 touchdown passes is really, really, really good in that league.

The outlets are pretty used to getting stories about anything and everything.. they won't usually do their own story for a minor signing but they might cut up what you send them and put it in..
I do get what Commando678 is saying though.. A team PR guy that I know once got blasted by a Sports Editor at a major outlet..
"WE DO NOT DO STORIES ABOUT MASCOTS!"
But it wasn't that he SENT the story about the mascot that upset the editor, it's that he called the editor and pushed the story..

It's a quality over quantity thing for me. Evansville has one major paper and a all of the local affiliates. I always worry about over loading them about a bunch of random guys who (let's be honest) no one knows about. I would rather hot them with the highlights. Signing a new Arena, training camp roster, gamed at roster and then I am willing to Do a story on just about anything during the season. Even having a transaction follower in the paper.
Evansville needs to see that we are utmost a professional organization. We need to be as far away from the BlueCats as possible.
The signings are great to put up on Facebook, twitter, and OSC. Again I am new to this but it's how I feel.
But I can always agree to disagree

I understand where you're coming from, but really all you're doing is letting opportunities for exposure slip through your fingers. The media expects press releases. No minor league team is going to overload them. We can get several a day from some teams, including transactions, promotional releases, game results, tryout notices, etc. Let the media cull what they can use and what they ignore. You might be surprised at what sees the light of day.
Also, even if local media doesn't use a release, OSC will! Get them into us and we can get them on the main site and into the search engines. It costs a team nothing, and you'd be shocked at how many hits some of the releases get.

Nail has been hit on the head. In college I did a marketing internship for a local mental health hospital, and almost half of the releases I sent out were picked up and printed almost verbatim. You do a good job writing the copy, and an editor will find a place for it.

Unfortunately, not sending out releases might be doing doing just the opposite. Your local media is probably used to getting hit with all sorts of stuff. If they are noticing a lack of things from your team, they might be thinking that the Rage aren't being run by a competent staff.
Question, and not asking to be a jerk-- you've mentioned that you are the "Social Media Director" for the team-- are you the one in charge of writing/sending out releases?

Its a team effort. I have written a press release but I won't be the only one. Just like any other team in any other league. Just because it isn't in my title doesn't mean I won't be doing it.

I am not ripping Dayton. Oh no, I wouldn't "rip" on any team. Just wouldn't do what they did.
I am not worried about any team. I think our team is the best team in all of indoor football. As anyone who works for Dayton should think they are the best. As Saginaw, Chicago, or hell any UIFL team. If you don't think your best, you're are probably the worst!
Caballo Diablo
01-23-2012, 09:08 PM
I wouldn't say you were "ripping" them but you have been criticizing them. Sure, that's what we as fans do here. But you're not just a fan, you actually work for the front office of a team. That's just unprofessional to come on a forum about the league and criticize another front office. The best surely wouldn't stoop that low would they?
The best in all of Indoor Football? If you don't think you're the best you're probably the worst? I disagree with both of those statemments. That's just not realisitc and borderline delusional. Most owners and front office workers understand they're not the best and work to improve. Very few can say they're the best. Saying you're the best in a division or even a league is one thing, but in all of Indoor Football?
Commando678
01-23-2012, 10:34 PM
You are correct I shouldnt criticize other teams publicly and for that I do apologize.
But I strongly disagree with your other part. If a team does not think they can beat any other team on a field they are doing themselves, their team and the city they represent a disservice. I truly believe we will be able to beat any INDOOR team once we get training camp out of the way. Look at our roster, our back up Olinemen are all conference. Our WR would start anywhere. Our dline not only ha indoor experience but also NFL game day experience.
Like I said before, if you do not prepare to be the best and don't think you are the best, then you are most certainly NOT the best!

Thinking you're able to beat other teams and thinking you're the "BEST" team in all of Indoor football are two different things. As the old saying goes, "on any given day."
The Cleveland Browns stink, yet they've beat the SuperBowl reigning champs 3 years in a row. Last season they only had 5 wins, yet they beat New Orleans and NewEngland back to back. I doubt those wins confused the team into thinking they were the best.
Yes, Souix Falls would indeed be a humbling expeirence. Just curious Commando, when you say "Indoor" are you truly speaking of that style or is the AFL also included in your "Indoor" catagory? To some it is and to some it's not.

Wait how is that bad?? That is the truth. Its not a detriment or talking about the talent level. Arena ball is AFL (I am pretty sure they still have the copyright) That is why all the other leagues have Indoor in the name.

Not all leagues have indoor in their name. and the AFL's patent on the game ran out in 2007 so other leagues like the LSFL and PIFL will use the A1 rules system and innovations as they have said they would do upon starting their leagues.
