Manchester basketball standout Sam Carey died in a single-car accident Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 93 in Campton, a family member confirmed.
Nicole Carey said her 26-year-old brother was thrown from the car and died later at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
He played basketball at Manchester Central High School from 2001 to 2004, graduated and then played at Southern New Hampshire University. He graduated from SNHU in 2008, but not before ranking sixth on the Penmen's all-time scoring list and leading the team in scoring and rebounds during his senior year.
“He was one of those extremely talented basketball players but also an overall great guy, a big lovable Teddy bear of a guy,” SNHU President Paul LeBlanc said.
Carey went on to play with the Manchester Millrats of the Premier Basketball League, and later in Germany.
He was center with the Quebec Kebs in Canada, and was with the team as recently as Sunday.
“He was in Canada playing ball. He was coming home,” Nicole Carey said Tuesday night.
But she said Carey was late, and she and his fiancee thought it was odd because he would have come straight to Manchester to see his 6-month-old son.
They started calling around, and she heard from her brother about the accident.
New Hampshire State Police said the accident happened about 2:10 p.m. on Interstate 93 South in Campton, just south of exit 28.
Carey's 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was found on its roof in the center of the median. He had been ejected from it.
According to state police, the SUV went off the left side of the highway and came right back on the road when Carey lost control of it. The Trailblazer then veered off the road for a second time, flipped several times and landed on its roof in the median.
He was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with serious internal injuries where he later died.
Nicole Carey said no other car was involved, and her brother wasn't wearing a seat belt.
His sister said her parents heard of the news in Florida, where they were preparing for an anniversary cruise. They are expected to fly into Manchester on Wednesday.
Carey was one of seven brothers and sisters. He leaves behind a fiancee, Katye Kenyon, and their son, Brayden.
State police said the cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is still under investigation.
