ASK THE CEO - ABA TEAM BEAT AN NBA TEAM?
19-Oct-2005
Question from Alex L, Clare, Iowa: "Since the Toronto Raptors of the NBA lost to Maccabi Tel Aviv, do you think that an ABA team could beat an NBA team?"
Answer. Alex. It didn't take long for others and you to ask this question. Yours was first. While Tel Aviv was playing with tournament zeal and for Toronto it was an exhibition, fans expect that every time a team takes the floor, the players will give 100% for the fans. At the NBA ticket prices, fans should expect nothing less, players should give nothing less. And while this could be considered an upset, the fact is that the NBA's overall record of domination is decreasing almost every time an NBA team takes the floor in international competition. The NBA's games against many countries are very close games proving that many, but not all, of the best players in the world are in the NBA, but not necessarily the best teams. Basketball is a team sport, not an individual sport. That's why the the World Championships and the Olympics are seeing teams other than NBA teams winning the Championships. Now, getting to your question. It is interesting that the NBA did accept an exhibition game with Tel Aviv. It is also interesting that they did not accept an exhibition game with the ABA to benefit Hurricane Katrina and Rita relief. I would assume that the NBA thought they would soundly defeat the Tel Aviv team and didn't feel as confident about playing an ABA team. The fact is that yes, we are confident that our teams could be competitive against NBA teams and beat them. Whether we get a chance to prove it is up to the NBA. My thought is that they might want to schedule some Junior College and Prep School exhibitions to prevent another embarrassment like the Tel Aviv game. I can't even imagine the response this answer will get. Have a great day.
