It took nearly two years, but the Macomb County Mustangs pro basketball team finally landed Terry Mills as its coach.
Mills, who played for Romulus High School, Michigan and the Pistons, will be named today as the team's coach.
Mustangs owner Bill Bullock said the long chase to land Mills was worth it.
"It took me a while to track him down, but once I did, he really wanted to help and work with the team," Bullock said. "He's great with the young guys and people respect him so much for his basketball knowledge. I'm really happy."
Mills, who last played in the NBA in 2000, occasionally worked for the team last season as a consultant.
Bullock fired coach Milton Douglas a month ago, after the team posted a 4-16 record in its first season in the International Basketball League.
Mills decided he wanted to coach, and Bullock agreed.
"I really want to get into scouting and evaluating talent, and I think this will be a really good way to start," Mills, 37, said. "That's where I see my basketball future. I go to a lot of high school games, evaluating talents.
"I think this is going to work well because I like the guys on the Mustangs and I think I can do a lot to teach them. I didn't have too many people when I was coming up as a young man to talk to me about the road ahead. I think I can provide that for these guys."
Mills said he's retained Mustangs assistant Willie Betts and added longtime AAU coach Al Littlejohn to his staff.
