View Full Version : Jerry Glanville named Hartford Colonials head coach
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6241713
Jerry Glanville will be announced as the coach of the United Football League's Hartford Colonials on Monday, the 69-year former NFL coach said Sunday.
Glanville follows Chris Palmer, who left to become the offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans.
"You do what you love," Glanville said. "The best part of this deal is watching players get better. That's what it's all about. If I was feeling any better, they'd have to send me to jail."
Glanville coached in the NFL for nine seasons, spending five seasons with the Houston Oilers and four with the Atlanta Falcons.
His most recent football job was at Portland State, where he went 9-24 from 2007-09.

I know this will be the leagues last year and up to now it has been pretty much a farce but these are the kind of coaches the league should have pursued from the beginning. The usfl went after coaches with personality like pepper rogers and lee corso. This is a great move because Jerry has lots of personality, tv connections, and he is really a non-nfl type coach. He doesnt look for players that only fit the nfl mold. Plus my favorite offense will now return to professional american football! Ladies and gentlemen the Run and Shoot has landed in the UFL. I look for Schwapf to move to setback and for Dixon to move to a slot position. If both Mccown and Perillioux are still around you can use a 2 quarterback system and not miss a beat because they are both mobile. Hartford will definately be the most fun to watch in the final season.

Who were 52 and 49, respectively, at the time they were hired by the USFL and had only been away from head coaching for four and zero years, respectively. Glanville will be 70 in October.
Glanville was absolutely a personality. In 1992. A personality that overshadowed his actual ability.

Given it's been 18 years since he's had to look for professional players at all, and given the constraints of the UFL, what makes you think you know what he'll look for in 2011?

True fact: The Oilers were far more efficient, high-scoring and able to rack up yards under Jack Pardee, who succeeded Glanville, than they were under Glanville. And the Falcons under Glanville were in the top third of the NFL in points and yards, but were craptacular on defense. If all you want to see is yards and not wins, knock yourself out.
The quarterbacks flourished in that system, but Warren Moon (naturally) and even Chris Miller were better pro quarterbacks than anything the UFL is likely to be able to attract.
Glanville's quite the card, I'll grant you that. What a quipster. But that stuff doesn't win football games in 2011. Especially after you've been away for almost two decades.

Sam, the UFL has been an absolute snooze fest. The announcer for the title game and the director of officials most acknowledged that fact. Lee Corso was not a winner in college but he was a great motivator and capable of putting a quality product on the field. He had never coached pro football before and it isnt like Jerry has been out of coaching. He has coached at Hawaii and Portland State. My only concern with the move is that the shoot usually takes a while to get kick started so with an eight game regular season will it take effect? Mouse Davis had problems with the 10 game WLAF schedule for that very reason. The good thing is it will be fun. Consider this to be the UFL's version of an Irish wake. Why mourn when you can party so enjoy it while it last.

So great to have The Man in Black back in professional football. I have followed his coaching since his first time with the Falcons (1977-82). He is a great defensive mind (one of the best in pro football history). His hiring will bring much needed publicity to the UFL.
