Just saw my first game of the reincarnated SD Sockers tonight (they won 9-5). I don't know about the other teams in the league, but the Sockers (allegedly) play indoors--it sure didn't seem like it tonight. For those that are not aware, they play at the Del Mar Arena, which is the horseshow arena next to the Del Mar horse track. The fair board put a roof on the place a couple of years ago, to give it the ability to host more events. Well, for me, indoor soccer is not one of those events. The roof is over the arena floor, but both ends are open to the elements, and tonight, the drawbacks of that arrangement reared their ugly heads. Tonight, there were the remnants of a storm front going through the San Diego area, and during the 4th quarter, the wind and rain were blowing in from one corner of the building, which was causing the center-hung scoreboard to sway pretty severely, and the Sockers defensive end of the field got pretty damp, which could have been a dangerous situation for the players of both teams (not to mention the canopies of a couple of concession stands blowing around). The game itself was pretty entertaining, but the Sockers can't really be taken seriously for playing in a "barn" like that. Unfortunately, that was the only game I will ever attend at that venue again. If it is indoor soccer, it should be played indoors.

"SAN DIEGO ---- When San Diego Sockers general manager John Kentera had hammered out the parameters of a deal to move the team to the Valley View Casino Center, he brought the club's three owners down to the old Sports Arena for a meeting last month.

During the session, Kentera laid out about a dozen reasons why the Sockers should leave the Del Mar Arena. He also listed two reasons why they should stay.

"And the major one was proximity to my house," said Kentera, who lives in Solana Beach.

In other words, the Sockers' announcement Tuesday that they'll play the 2012-13 Professional Arena Soccer League season in their longtime home was pretty much a no-brainer. After three years of re-establishing itself as a viable franchise, the latest incarnation of the Sockers is returning to where the team believes it belongs."

It is time to go see the Sockers again, as they are finally going to do what an indoor soccer team should be doing, which is playing indoors.

I agree. I'll go check out a game or two. The only thing I think might be a problem is the parking fee. the last time I checked it was $15 to $20.

Anybody who buys season tickets through the middle of July is going to get free parking, Kentera said. Parking will be $9 for Sockers games.

Thanks Sam, my bad. It would help if I read the entire article. $9 is not bad at all. I can't buy season passes to get free parking, but I can handle $9

I can't buy season passes to get free parking, but I can handle $9 I believe that is the same price as the parking at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. I am really looking forward to seeing the Sockers where they should have been all along.

Great news for the San Diego Sockers! Baltimore Blast fans sure do miss our rivalries with them. For those of you old enough to remember, the games were epic!!

Hopefully with the new location they will be able to pack the arena. Otherwise, this could mark the end of them. But I'm optimistic on the idea of moving the team.

I don't think they will pack 'em in, but they should have much better crowds, as they are finally playing indoors. If they could draw in the neighborhood of 6-7k, management (I would think) should be really happy. Also, another benefit of playing in their old home is as of now, they are the only team there--no hockey team in San Diego at present. So, less competition, more people in the seats for the Sockers. I also remember the Blast-Sockers rivalry; it was a marquee match-up every time the 2 teams played.

Finally saw a game this season on 11/23. Sockers won big (14-4 I think). They had just over 4k in the arena, and they only use the lower level seats, which means they can't hold much more than 5 or 6k. The place is still a dump; the security to get in is ridiculous (empty your pockets and full pat-down--airport security would be so proud); but the important thing is, the Sockers are once again truly an indoor team.

PASL Points and Assists Records Fall as Sockers Crush Arizona 16-2

Kraig Chiles matched a career high with a nine point game, racking up five goals and four assists to set a new PASL single-season points record, as the San Diego Sockers smashed the Arizona Storm 16-2 in front of 4,703 at the Valley View Casino Center. Chiles' five goals gave him 54 for the season, already bettering his league goals mark, and the nine points gave him 70 for the year, besting Bernie Lilavois' 2008-09 PASL record of 68 points in a season. Aaron Susi added a goal and five assists, giving him 29 assists for the year, also a new PASL record.
