Just saw my first game of the reincarnated SD Sockers tonight (they won 9-5). I don't know about the other teams in the league, but the Sockers (allegedly) play indoors--it sure didn't seem like it tonight. For those that are not aware, they play at the Del Mar Arena, which is the horseshow arena next to the Del Mar horse track. The fair board put a roof on the place a couple of years ago, to give it the ability to host more events. Well, for me, indoor soccer is not one of those events. The roof is over the arena floor, but both ends are open to the elements, and tonight, the drawbacks of that arrangement reared their ugly heads. Tonight, there were the remnants of a storm front going through the San Diego area, and during the 4th quarter, the wind and rain were blowing in from one corner of the building, which was causing the center-hung scoreboard to sway pretty severely, and the Sockers defensive end of the field got pretty damp, which could have been a dangerous situation for the players of both teams (not to mention the canopies of a couple of concession stands blowing around). The game itself was pretty entertaining, but the Sockers can't really be taken seriously for playing in a "barn" like that. Unfortunately, that was the only game I will ever attend at that venue again. If it is indoor soccer, it should be played indoors.
