Mustangs to play at St. Clement

The Macomb County Mustangs have found a new home.
Mustangs owner and president Bill Bullock announced Tuesday the team will play its home games for the 2006 season at St. Clement in Center Line.

"I think it's going to be a good fit," said Bullock, whose team is preparing for its second season after going 4-16 in its inaugural campaign in the International Basketball League.

The high school at St. Clement closed in June, one of 15 parochial schools shut down by the Archdiocese of Detroit because of budget woes.

But classes for elementary students will continue this fall, and Bullock said the school administration was enthusiastic about bringing the Mustangs to their gym.

In fact, Bullock said he only needed a half-hour to make his pitch as St. Clement wants to raise money for its school and parish.

"They really want to get behind it," Bullock said.

Last season, the Mustangs played nine of their home games at L'Anse Creuse North, and the team struggled to draw crowds to their games.

Though St. Clement's gym is smaller, Bullock is encouraged.

"It'll make it a lot easier for us to get the community out," he said.

In addition to playing their 10 home games at St. Clement, the Mustangs also will hold tryouts there in December.

The team is also planning a charity game for this fall that will pit the Mustangs against St. Clement teachers.

NOTES: Guard Justin Hall, the Mustangs leading scorer last season, will play in Germany this year. Bullock said Hall also has committed to the Mustangs when the season in Europe is finished. ... Point guard Dallas Logan again will play in Europe next year. He played the last half of the season for the Mustangs, and he made a last-second layup in the team's victory over Des Moines in the season-finale.

Jeffery Matoshko signed on to become the team chiropractor again.

The Mustangs are offering an early-bird special for season tickets -- $35 for 10 games -- through Aug. 31. Call the Mustangs office at (586) 206-4346.
