I found this on the RIFL site. I am not sure when it appeared there but I would guess it was this past week.
AUGUSTA MAVERICKS JOIN THE RIFL
The RIFL announced Monday afternoon that the Augusta Mavericks have joined the league and will begin play this season. Head Coach Cedric Roach said "We are extremely excited about the opportunity to join the league. We like what is in place and hope to have several successful years here."
All I can say is

I am not convinced that the RIFL actually exists in any meaningful fashion.
The "league" site has live links to two teams, one of which is a semi-pro outdoor team dabbling in the indoor game. Everything else is placeholders and wishful thinking.
If and when they actually play games... well, actually, I'm not counting on that. I'm waiting for the "postponed to 2011" announcement.

.
So a team that couldn't get ready to play in the SIFL in 2010 had time to get ready for the RIFL. Now that seems to say their isn't much preparation needed to join the RIFL.

This has to one of the oddest and most stupid moves I have ever seen in indoor football. This travel schedule will be worse than the IFL or AIFA not to mention the SIFL who bases thier belifs in short travel. A team in Denver, Florida, 5 in Texas and 2 in New Mexico. The league claims it has signed a deal with a "Major Tv Network". In another words maybe a free webcast service like sickam, featuring 1 camera and a single braodcaster. There most likely will be a team in Augusta for the SIFL in 2011 but not the Mavericks apparently. Oh well the third time (or team) is a charm they say. Here is the link to the RIFL site if anyone wants to ponder this. http://www.regionalindoorfootballleague.com/

Maybe they are doing this to "get their feet wet" in the indoor game. Since they were/are only going to possibly play 2 exhibition games with the SIFL this year, this is an opportunity to get the team up and running.
If the league actually gets going and the team survives, they can join the SIFL in 2011.
Again, I said "MAYBE"

I would agree that a one year move would make sense but the league appears to be looking for long term deals. Their site mentions championship game locations for years to come and even awarded it to teams that wont be in the league till next year at best. How are they ever going to afford to travel? Also I dont think that the local media has any clue what is going on with them. I have not seen anything in the local paper about this. They are really taking a big risk joining this league. I would rather them play an outdoor semipro season indtead of this. Atleast it would be easy to traval and get a field. Augusta is small but good city for Minor and Independent League Sports. Hope thinks work out in the long run.
From what I read, there was an online newspaper article relating to the subject... and you are correct. The Mavericks claim they are using that season as development since the SIFL was planning to only schedule them a few exhibition games in the Augusta area to generate interest. They are still scheduled to be the first expansion team slated for 2011. If I can find the link again I'll put it up here.
