Looking at the Austin Turfcats roster, I was wondering if any of these guys have played beyond the indoor leagues? (AF2, AFL, CFL, UFL, NFL)

I recognize quite a few that played for the semi pro Austin Gamebreakers team. Just curious, I may go checkout one of their games.

The listed roster is incomplete, most of those guys played for Austin last season. Last seaon they had players previously from both the AFL ans af2.

A couple of the new names listed so far are:

Derrick Hill DE/LB (San Angelo last season)
Fred Strong WR (Oklahoma)
Kemmie Lewis WR/FS (Last season the Defensive league MVP - SIFL - Acadiana)
Derik Stotland C (Arkansas and Austin af2)

I can't release names not listed.

Well I was asking about this years IFL team. I know the QB Deron Ellis played for the semi pro Austin Gamebreakers.

Any players on this years Turfcats roster play in the AFL leagues, UFL, CFL, or NFL?

I recognize one of their QB's Kelley Hancock played in the NIFL for the San Antonio Steers. A majority of their roster are semi pro guys.

Huh?

Of the 29 players currently listed, most played for the TurfCats last season.

And most of those guys played for the semi pro Austin Gamebreakers. So the Turfcats are basicly a semi pro/SIFL team.

Some, I'm not sure about most. A couple had even previously played for the semi-pro North Texas Crunch. The T-Cats were an expansion team in the SIFL last season, but I was pretty sure they got paid similar to the other leagues which either makes them all pro or all semi-pro.

Last season were the players in the af2, CIFL, IFL, AIFA, etc also semi-pro?

Actually Pro= Full time employee

Semi-Pro= Can be paid, but not a full time wage

Actually Pro= Full time employee

Semi-Pro= Can be paid, but not a full time wage

so, what you're saying is that all non outdoor football currently being played, or planned for this season, based purely on league "rules" is, by definition, semi-pro. This includes, the AFL (2.0), IFL, SIFL, AIFA, CIFL, APFL, and others i might be forgetting.

This ought to set the fanboy's pants on fire.

Pro = getting paid money

semi pro = not getting paid money
So you're of the opinion all of the listed leagues are pro?

Actually Pro= Full time employee

Semi-Pro= Can be paid, but not a full time wage
And your opinion is they're all semi-pro?
Even the 2.0?

Not smacking any of the leagues, just trying to clarify.

No way we get into this debate. We all know what we are referring to in regards to football.

Pro = league has salary; equipment, travel, insurance provided (NFL, UFL, CFL, AFL, AIFA, IFL, SIFL, CIFL)

Semi pro = league has no salary, players provide equipment, insurance, travel (APFL, IIFA, NAFL and the hundreds of other outdoor semi pro leagues)

The North Texas Crunch, in the IIFA, players get paid, equiptment is supplied, travel is covered, insurance is provided. By your standard in the previous post (indoor fan), that is not semi-pro. I almost agree with whoever said it was about the ability to make a living off of the salary made for the season. that would leave just about every league off the list.

I'm with indoor fan on this one. In semi-pro, not everyone is supposed to get paid or some people are getting paid on a cut of the gate or pass the hat basis.

Reread the previous post. LEAGUE HAS SALARY

What's the base player salary of the IIFA......ZERO.

That's a semi pro league.

The word semi-pro used by the different leagues is actually used improperly. What most call semi-pro, is actually recreation football. Players pay teams to participate and supply their own equipment.

What semi-pro is actually supposed to be is players being paid, just not a full time wage. That is the base definition. A player playing in the said alphabet of leagues, makes lets take the rules version of $900 before taxes a month in games they lose and goes up to $1000 in winning games. By the definition of poverty in this country, this would qualify all these professional athletes as poverty stricken. If you take into account the teams that house and give two meals a day, makes the pay a little better, but come on. Does that sound like professional to anyone.

I will say that AFL 2.0 as some put it, comes closer to being above the poverty line. Lets not try to dress this up too much. The salaries are not very good considering what the players body goes through. For most, still playing under the lights is worth the risk, and for those that dont have a family, it works for them.

Who can define a "full time" wage and what someone can live off? Mike Tyson declared bankruptcy.

Dude, nice try, semi pro football = the league does not pay it's players. Let it go, bro.

Indoor Fan, besides the fact that you seem to think that you know it all, you are dead wrong. Look up the definition of pro. What would make semi-PRO? Again, what you call semi-pro in actuality is recreation football. What would you call a college club team? Some of the colleges without football programs play in these type of leagues.

Nice try, you still see the AFL and the AF1 as one in the same. I think I would reevaluate who should be giving this up.

The problem with your definition is that basically you lump all those playing beneath the major leagues as semi-pro. If you get paid, you're a professional.

Paul, we all know that all of these leagues use the term "professional". I am not disputing that. Besides league marketability, do you honestly call a person making roughly $200 before taxes per week a true professional? A true professional in any other industry would be appauled at such a wage for a professional. The great part about capitalism is that you can claim your product to be whatever you want, even though it isnt what you claim it is. All I can say is we use the term professional very loosely in these regards.

What is your definition of semi-pro?

Your definition of pro is lumping anyone that gets paid as a professional. You may not agree with my definition, but I dont agree with yours. The APFL pays their players, but most everyone on this board calls them a semi-pro league. I am confused as how your definition doesnt apply to those players.

A McDonalds grill person doesnt call themselves a professional chef, do they?

Actually the McDonalds grill person is a professional chef. He is paid, given a uniform, has workmans comp., etc.

If he had to buy his own uniform, did not get paid and had no ins, he would be a semi pro chef.

The APFL does not have a set salary; it's a semi pro league.

professional is a state of mind and a way of behaving as much or moreso than how much, or whether or not, one get's paid.

As an example, your actions on this internet message board are, by my definition, are unprofessional.

Yes, I get that some see a problem in lumping all "pros" together, thinking that somehow we're equating NFL players with indoor football players. That's not the case anymore than comparing a short order cook and a master chef. Yeah, both are pros but there's no question who is more skilled.

And you can tell that how? What about the ones of us that have played, coached, and managed at the highest levels?

Let me try one: "I can see some of you never spent time in a classroom, but are always posting responses as a professional". That is a bit too generalized and insulting isn't it? As I read your poor grammar, and insults on a regular basis, I often wonder what premiere league wouldn't reprimand an owner for conduct detrimental to the league.

I will give my final response and end the topic. If a professional gets paid, than a semi-professional should be getting some sort of compensation as well.

In a recreational league, players must pay the team or league to participate, and supply all said equipment.

preeths
03-03-2010, 02:03 PM
In the semi-pros, sometimes a few players get paid, while on other teams everybody might get a little something based upon a cut of the gate or by passing the hat. Some semi-pros teams will supply some equipment, even if only to certain players. Yes, it's kind of a mess that runs the gamut from some teams being pretty close to professional and others being totally rec league. That's why we look at it on a league-wide basis. There the distinctions are a bit more clear cut, and there is a noticeable difference between pro leagues and semi-pro ones.

C'mon, fellow message boards and do something positive.

Let's help Douglas McCarthy and his ongoing battle with literacy.

We need to figure out some way to reward Doug for using proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. Eventually, we'll work up to manners and professionalism.

We really can't save the sport for from its annual train wreck, but we can help Doug.

C'mon. We can do this.

Let's all just agree that there are different levels of being a professional, the different levels being one of pay and maybe benefits, but fact remains by the pure definition of the word, if you are paid, you are a professional.
