Does anyone remember anything about this team? I have never heard of them, but I did not follow the league that closely back then.

Rumor has it that they were a proposed expansion team that ended up moving to Sacramento and becoming the Attack.

Just curious if they were ever really an AFL team, or just an urban myth.

Thanks for the info. I too have never heard of them and no, they did not play in the AFL. I have been a fan from day one. If you remember, the Pittsburgh Gladiators played a game in Sacramento before moving on to become the Tampa Bay Storm. During that game, the announcers were mentioning that Sacramento was being considered for expansion and it was alluded that the Gladiators could be the team to have moved there. No, I have never known of the LA Wings, however, that is very plausable that they were awarded a franchise and moved to Sacramento instead. Thanks for the info and keep us informed.

Yes, the LA Wings were a planned expansion team in 1992. Joe Kapp was to be the coach:

Thank you Paul, but Question: So what became of the L.A. Wings? Did they move to Sacramento or another city, or did they never play and if so, why?

Generally, yes...

The league expanded to Los Angeles, San Antonio, Carolina, and Phoenix in
1992. The Los Angeles spot was given to Sacramento when the Wings
(who were already renamed the Attack.) owners ran into problems
with league brass (Primarily financial).

In those day's, Sacramento was itching for a team (AFL, NFL, NHL, MLB,
MISL, or any other league that existed). With the Attack, already with
a schedule, and in order for the league to avoid the embarrassment of
reshuffling so close to the beginning of the season. A trip up the freeway
(to a willing ownership group) seemed logical.

The Attack would last only one season in Sacramento before moving to Miami
and becoming the never unforgettable "Hooters".

The 1989 Gladiators in Sacramento was part of a retooling of the AFL in which
a season (almost not played) consisted of several games being played at
neutral sites.

There is some mention of that in the below article
http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3600782

If memory serves, the Glad's coach hit either a player or offical in that
Sacramento game, and was suspended for the game I saw in Cleveland
between Pittsburgh and the Detroit Drive.

:) Forget memory -- Here is a link. (He punched the commissioner...) :eek:

All five cities were expansion candidates, none received a team as
a result of the 1989 test market games (Those teams came later
and some were transplanted.)

I still have the game program from 1989 that listed the cities.

How could they have not known about the LA Wings of the National Cycle League???

A couple years later LA would get their AFL team with the Pirahnas.

Anaheim --- Piranhas... (1996-97) {The "hungry for more tenants" -- Pond}

Los Angeles --- Avengers... (2000-09) {Staples Center}

It was never the same after the first go 'round with the Cobras. (1988) {L.A. Arena}

Does anyone know if there is a T.V. deal in place for the AF1?

I have several Birmingham games (Stallions (USFL), Bolts (XFL)and Barracudas (CFL '95).

Rumor has it that AF1 is working out a game of the week agreement for a TV deal, and one coach mentioned Versus.
