Palm Springs... They left the door open by saying 2010 or 2011...but their California Winter League is a nice little model to generate capital for their summer team.
The one thing that I figured would keep Starke out would be the summer heat. That's why I saw his winter league as him throwing his weight all into that.
Great locale. I don't know how big the summer population in Palm Springs is. It probably isn't any hotter than Yuma would be. Or Chico for that matter. I think trips to OC and LB would still require overnight stays/expenses.
4/1 odds they call themselves the "Heat"

Is Starke going to run this new team?

No. The group that owns the rights to the new team is Palm Springs Professional Baseball, LLC. Starke has nothing to do with them. He's currently in a legal battle with the GBL's Arizona Winter League over a breach of contract or something like that.

Great. It appeared Starke was doing his own thing with the Winter League, and then naturally, he wasn't playing by the league office rules and they are competing against him in all bids.
The GBL doesn't have the capital to be making competing bids and trying to start another league owned team. I maintain, from the top of the thread, that Palm Springs is too hot a summer destination to get people to the park. Yeah..Yuma does it, with little success...but in Yuma, that's the only entertainment in town. In Palm Springs....people seem more apt to drive to the Dodgers or any number of Cal League teams to get their fix.
It might take a few years of stabilization, but a winter league in SoCal would trump the AWL. Closer to home for a lot of guys.
All in all, I'm surprised that an announcement was made about a Palm Springs team if the league is going to fight Starke. I assumed they only announced a team because Starke was sure he could make it work. If they are going to challenge Starke in his market, than I can see another GBL owned team, eating ****, not spending an exztra $300/mo. for the best players, and diluting the league.
