CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Arena Football will return to Cleveland in 2010 with a team in Arena Football 1, a source close to the situation told The Plain Dealer tonight.
The team is expected to be nicknamed the Gladiators, and will begin play in April as part of a 15-team league.
The source said the franchise will be owned by Jim Ferraro, who owned the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League in 2008. In their only season in Cleveland, the Gladiators made the playoffs. The AFL suspended operations after the 2008 season and eventually disbanded.
Ferraro, reached by phone, declined comment.
A news conference will be scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The source said Ferraro will again have Bernie Kosar as part of the front office. Kosar, the former Browns quarterback, was part-owner and general manager of the Cleveland Gladiators in 2008.
The new Gladiators are expected to play the The Q, which was their original home. [/url]
Press conference is scheduled for today at 4 PM.
This and Tampa Bay's return marks the beginning of AFL teams joining the AF1 after the AF1's successful purchase of the AFL.
