from the buffalo paper today...

Season tickets go on sale this week on the team Web site. The 18-game home schedule will be announced in July after the owners' meeting, where the 37 teams will be given conference affiliations.

what happened to the 70+ teams that were projected???

I think they mean expansion teams.

Which still doesn't come close to 70.

There will be a team in every pot.

I suspect the number of teams which actually compete will be in the low 50s, maybe high 40s.
Personally, I don't have a problem with that as those that do actually take to the court will probably be professional franchises in the best meanings of the work professional.
In my opinion, it is more important to have good quality franchises than to just have a lot of teams.
As I have said before (Sam, I'm sure you have filed this somewhere) what is most important this season is for every team in the league to play every game as scheduled.

According to the ABA website, the following teams are lined up for the 2005-06 season:

Boston Frenzy
Buffalo Rapids
Central Dawgs
Charleston
Charlotte Krunk
Chattanooga
Cincinnati Monarchs
Columbus Mustangs
Detroit Wheels
Florida Pit Bulls
Fresno Heatwave
Gallup Talons
Harlem Strong Dogs
Hawaii
Indianapolis Alley Cats
Inglewood
Kansas City Knights
Kentucky Colonels
Lake Charles Hurricanes
Las Vegas Rattlers
Long Beach Languneros
Long Island Strong Island Sound
Los Angeles Aftershock
Louisiana Cajun Pelicans
Maryland Nighthawks
Minneapolis/St. Paul Slamma Jammas
Mississippi Stingers

New Mexico Style
New Orleans Blues

Norfolk
North Carolina Renegades
Ohio Aviators

San Antonio Stallions
San Francisco Pilots
San Jose Skyrockets
Santa Barbara
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
St. Louis Flight

Quite an impressive line-up there. However, considering that half the teams don't have names yet, I wonder what Joe will come up with when all the good names like the Carolina Krunk and the New Mexico Style are already taken.

I guess we never learn from the past.

I suspect the number of teams to compete until the 3/4 point of the season to be six or seven teams--possibly less, but not more. Teams that do not travel do not count. Teams that go away mysteriously during the season do not count. Most importantly, teams that exist on paper only (for the purpose of holding tryout camps?) do not count.

"There will be a team in every pot."

Got a feeling there might be a little pot in every team, as well. :-)

As I learn more and more about American minor league hoops, one thing I am discovering is that, with the sole exception of the CBA, where almost all the teams average 4-digit attendance, small crowds are the rule, not the exception, throughout minor league hoops. The reigning NBDL champ averaged less than 500 at the gate, noone in the WBA averages 1000, the IBL has 2 or 3 teams that draw well, but the rest don't draw flies, same with the USBL. The only thing unique about the ABA is its' massive size, a direct result of the low franchise fees.
What remains to be seen is if the "new standards" will result in ownership groups that will honor and complete league schedules. I'm hopeful, but VERY skeptical.

FROM WHAT I CAN SEE THE NEWER TEAMS ARE BOOKING SMALLER VENUES (3,000 AND LESS) ID LIKE THEM MERGE TEAMS AND RESORCES AND PICK 20 TEAMS TO BE IN THE LEAUGE.............5 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TEAMS IS NOT CALLED FOR.................. 3 BAY AREA TEAMS IS KIND OF STUPID AND 2 TEAMS 20 MILES OUTSIDE OF SEATTLE IS KIND OF MIND BENDING(TACOMA AND BELLEVUE ARE OWNED BY THE SAME GROUP) SO PICK 20 TEAMS AND PRAY FOR THE BEST..................SINCE IM MOVING TO INDY I HOPE THE ALLEY CATS ARE A FOR REAL TEAM

It does seem that the Austin NBDL franchise is off to a great start in season ticket sales. They also play in a venue of less than 3,500. Good sign for them.

cdawg,
There hasn't even been a whisper about the Alleycats that I have found about since the tream was announced. That may mean anything from nothing is happening to plans are going well but nothing is being announced until everything is solidly in place. Since the team is still listed and some other announced teams are no longer listed, I have some hope the latter situation might be the case. Given the Legends' history here, having everything (venue, staff, financing, office) in place before making announcements is probably a good idea.
We also have a baseball team going very well, we are between two major auto races, and the NBA season is ongoing so there isn't a lot of media time or space available right now, anyway.

While reviewing the situation, I find myself having positive thoughts about the ABA this season.

I am not sure if it is due to the former NBA players who have taken ownership interest in teams or there is a sincere attempt to rid the slum-lords of the league.

I would expect the eastern based teams to have some more success than teams out west.

How many teams will be in the CBA this season? I know that Gary is in a tad bit of trouble and notice the Great Lakes Storm site is unavailable.

Since the team is still listed....

Ya, but so are the Detroit Wheels. You know, the Detroit Wheels that never played a game in the state of Michigan, let alone in Detroit. The Detroit Wheels that never had a home court, or a web site, or a logo, or any media attention, or advertising, or promotion in any fashion whatsoever. The same Wheels who's page on the ABA site has not had any news updates, or changes of any kind, since January.

A team being listed on the site means NOTHING!!!

Does anyone know, based on Uncle Joe's current list, what the smallest venue in the ABA is? And if he has a team in Hawaii, why hasn't Alaska gotten a team yet?

I'm sure there are many , many tied at -0-. If you don't have a venue, as many do not, then the capacity of your venue is -0-.

That bus trip to/from Hawaii has gotta really suck!

Lake Charles is in this year aren't they?

P.S. Why did they quit on the Reno franchise?
