That is an interesting announcement that Derrick Pearson, fomer media director of the Utah Snowbears, formerly of the ABA, will host a weekly talk show for the ABA.
Ontario's announcement of season ticket sales suggests they will be in a 10-team division of Southern California teams, Las Vegas and Hawaii.
I happened to check the ABA schedule at ABAlive.com. It still shows last season's schedule and results, but in many cases, team names have been ommitted. Those are teams which are not returning, including Arkansas. Those teams have also been dropped from the standings. I really don't understand this. Some teams are not returning. OK, but they did play last year and one of them won the championship! What happened, happened. Why would the league want to try to erase documented history?
I see some ABA teams and the league doing some things in a professional manner this summer, but this smacks of petty childishness.

Why would the league want to try to erase documented history?

They already play fast and loose with the present. The past is just another frontier for them to conquer.

Annnnnnnnnd, to everyone's surprise, the standards to which all teams will be strictly held to this year are already being bent, and it's only June 4.

From the Omaha World-Herald:

"ABA team doesn't have arena yet

A deadline to secure a playing arena has passed for the Omaha entry in the American Basketball Association, but the minor league team is being given additional time to make arrangements for the 2005-06 season. "

Well done there, Joe!

The Ontario Warriors are reported to be selling season tickets for 20 home games. As far as I can tell, the ABA is still planning a 36-game season, although I think I remember seeing another team was planning more than 16 home games.

ABA teams playing varying amounts of home games? Huh. That's odd.

I guess the odd part is actually disclosing that beforehand rather than just as you go along.

Anyone who actually buys ABA season tickets is being given a pretty strong indicator from God that they need to tithe more.

I think it sucks that these ABA teams are gone:

Chicago Soldiers
Portland Reign
New Jersey Skycats
Utah SnowBears

When I went to ABALive. com this morning I found this--
"There is no website configured at this address.
You are seeing this page because there is nothing configured for the site you have requested."
Maybe the site is being revamped to get ready for the new season.

The ABA web site experienced a massive hard drive failure yesterday. The hard drive has been replaced and we are in the process of restoring the web site. We should be fully back online within a few hours. Thank you for your patience!

Saturday, July 16, 2005 4:30pm CT

We've discovered that a difference in the configuration on the restored server is incompatible with our database. We have two teams working simultaneoulsy... one attempting to fix the incompatibility while the other working to restore all of our data in another database format by hand. As soon as one solution or the other is complete, the site will be back online. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Sunday, July 17, 2005

The database problems have been fixed. We are now re-entering by hand the changes made since the last full backup and will be back online shortly.

Tomorrow it might say "The ABA website has always functioned perfectly. You are meanspirited if you try to say it ever went down. The NBA is afraid of our powerful website, which is not only affordable, but is also fan-friendly. Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia."

Maybe the website went down because too many people were trying to log in and catch the latest ABA news. Or maybe it went down because all the new ABA teams' rosters -- all 172 of 'em -- caused the server to crash.

Or maybe it just went down 'cause Uncle Joe forgot to send the payment in.

So, this weekend, the ABA is having their SECOND owners' meeting of the off-season, at a music festival/conference in Texas (www.texassummermusicconference.com - FYI). During the conference, one of the sessions to be held is called "Radio Careers/Sports & Entertainment Forum… How to Get in the system and influence the masses" - which includes a section "How to successfully run a sports franchise." And on the panels of 'experts' are none other than Joe and Ricardo! Exactly how many franchises have they run successfully, in any defintion of the word???

Kind of like having Lay or Ebbers on a panel about strong corporate ethics, or Michael Jackson on raising children, or Charlie Sheen and Jude Law on marriage and fidelity, etc...
