Went to the Mesa opener on Thursday night - no shock, the crowd of about 600 was announced as 3,264. Mesa looks solid, Yuma looked pathetic, especially the pitching. Their opening day starter lasted maybe 3 innings and couldn't throw a strike, and it only got worse. Grant Williams from the Frontier League pitched for Mesa and looked great, but who knows what the talent level is for Yuma.

Good game show put on by the Mesa staff, lots of things going on and lots of people on the field to take part in contests.

They had a lot of seats with white slips of paper taped on them, especially in the upper seating. Guess those were tickets sold or given away, which made the 3,264. They pushed the $1 tickets all weekend, maybe they'll draw more. Thing is, it's hot. It's Arizona. Go figure.

Oh - if anyone from the Mesa staff has any control over it, please have the food people stop raping the customers. Four bucks for a bottle of water? Five for a large soda, four for a hot dog. Hot dogs are $3.75 at the Diamondbacks games. Ouch.

Both openers (Mesa and Surprise) got about a half-column of combined coverage in the Arizona Republic. Got a feeling that's the last coverage we'll see.

Anyway, for what it's worth - decent baseball (at least on one side) and a good atmosphere. Just eat before you get to the game.

Thanks for the synopsis.

I can't find attendance figures on the GBL website. Does anyone have any concrete information on how many people have been going to these games after the first week?

And as for eating before getting to the game -- that's something I always do anyway. Hard to justify paying $3 for a hot dog, when for the price of two dogs I can see another ballgame.

Mesa announced in the 400-range through the weekend, so you figure actual was in the 150 or so range. Don't know about the rest of them.

Looks like they have work to do.

attendance at long beach has been about 500-700 during the week. They state about 1000 but of course those count the season tickets and corporate ones as well that noone seems to be using.

On a side note, I am really enjoying this league. It seems be some great baseball and not a bunch of million dollar cry babies.
