ROCKFORD CRUISES TO 6-1 WIN OVER MILWAUKEE

10/23/2009

Rockford, Ill.- Call it revenge for last season's playoff sweep or call it the product of a team playing well at home, but the Rockford IceHogs cruised to a 6-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals at the Rockford MetroCentre on Friday.

Corey Crawford was brilliant in net making 32 saves including 15 in the second period to keep Rockford in control.

"Another typical night from him," said defenseman Brian Connelly. "Any time you can give up one goal, it just means we have to do the rest. We got a couple there and he got some more confidence. He moved the puck well for us and it was a great effort by him."

Evan Brophey put the Hogs on the board with his first of the season, a quick shot past Mark Dekanich at 10:04 in the first frame at the Rockford MetroCentre. Mike Brennan had an assist.

Jack Skille found room in the deep slot and drove the puck past Dekanich at 17:49 to put the Hogs up by two. Kyle Greentree and Mark Cullen recorded the helpers on Skille’s first goal with Rockford.

In the second period, Danny Bois picked up his own rebound and put it top shelf at 2:11 to give the IceHogs some insurance, making it 3-0. Rob Klinkhammer and Brophey had the helpers.

"Guys were just more focused tonight," said Connelly. "We were getting pucks in deep and getting shots on the net. This is a good one to build on and we just have to do it again tomorrow."

Then Mike Santorelli put the Admirals on the board when he drove the puck under Crawford at 6:55 in the second with helpers from Peter Olvecky and Jonathon Blum. That’s as close as Milwaukee could make it, however, as Crawford slammed the door the rest of the way.

The third period started on a power play for the IceHogs and Connelly took advantage. The rookie blue liner snuck up the left side, took a pass from Greentree and put it in at 1:05 in the final frame to give Rockford a 4-1 lead. The second assist went to Cullen.

"The crowds have been good so far and they were energetic," Connelly said. "We were building off of that. This is a good building to play in so hopefully it will continue."

Akim Aliu got in on the action with his third goal of the season at 16:28 in the third with assists from Klinkhammer and Dave Phillips. The helper was the first career AHL point for Phillips.

Mark Cullen wrapped things up for the IceHogs with his fourth goal of the season. The goal came with 1:19 remaining and help from Connelly and Daryl Boyle. Cullen finished the game with a season-high three points (1g-2a).

Rockford was 2-for-4 on the power play and Milwaukee was 0-for-3.

Admirals Lose Big in Rockford

10/24/2009

The Milwaukee Admirals concluded its season-opening six game road trip with a 6-1 loss at Rockford.
The loss means Milwaukee opened the season on the road with a 2-3-0-1 record.

Rockford took a 1-0 lead at 10:04 of the first period on a long wrist shot by Evan Brophey. Brophey received the outlet from Mike Brennan. He skated to the middle of the Admirals blue line and sent a shot that trickled through the legs of goalie Mark Dekanich.

The IceHogs made it 2-0 at 17:49 of the first period when Jack Skille moved into the slot from the left wing and fired a shot under the crossbar over Dekanich’s right shoulder. It was ruled that Kyle Greentree got a piece of the puck as he skated in front of Dekanich, so the goal was awarded to Greentree, his second of the season.

Rockford’s strong forecheck led to a 3-0 lead when Danny Bois fired a wrist shot from the left circle over the left hand of Dekanich at 2:11 of the second period.

Milwaukee got on the board when Mike Santorelli scored his second goal of the season from the left circle at 6:55 of the second period. Santorelli skated from behind the Rockford net, turned and shot between the legs of goalie Corey Crawford. Peter Olvecky and Jonathan Blum recorded assists.

Defenseman Brian Connelly continued the night’s scoring with a power play goal at 1:05 of the third period. Akim Aliu scored on a partial breakaway at 16:28 of the third and Mark Cullen added another power play goal with 1:19 to play.

Milwaukee outshot the IceHogs 34-27.

Six IceHogs score in blowout victory

By Reed Schreck-RRSTAR.COM

ROCKFORD — Ideally, Rockford IceHogs coach Bill Peters said, he’d “rather dominate the game and give up 19 shots.”

Friday night against Milwaukee was not one of those occasions. The Admirals pounded away at goalie Corey Crawford, especially in the second period. But Crawford & Co. held ground almost the entire evening, treating a MetroCentre crowd of 3,926 to a 6-1 victory before they enjoyed a postgame concert by Night Ranger during the team’s first Hogtoberfest.

Milwaukee outshot Rockford 34-27, but six different ’Hogs solved Admirals goaltender Mark Dekanich while only Mike Santorelli could beat Crawford.

Rockford (5-3-1) led 2-0 after one period on scores by Evan Brophey and Jack Skille, and 3-0 just 2:11 into the second after Danny Bois connected. That’s when things got too interesting for Crawford, as Milwaukee (2-3-1) had a 16-4 edge in shots on net to start the middle period.
Santorelli flicked the puck past Crawford from the left circle at the 6:55 mark to make it 3-1.

“Sometimes that’s going to happen,” Peters said of Milwaukee’s shot surge. “It’s nice to know you have a guy like that back there (in Crawford).”

“You try and limit those Grade A chances as much as you can,” said Rockford defenseman Mike Brennan, who was plus-3 on the night along with Rob Klinkhammer. “But you know when they get through, he’s going to be there.

“After they scored that goal, they kind of turned it up a bit. Part of being a good hockey team is rebounding from that. I think Corey came up big for us.”

Crawford continuously frustrated the Admirals, including Jonathan Blum and Santorelli as both came in all alone on the game’s No. 1 star shortly after Milwaukee’s goal.

“They came out strong in the second period,” Crawford said. “A couple of times the puck flipped on our ‘D,’ and we got handcuffed in the corner, and they were able to put some pressure on us.

“The end of the second and beginning of the third were the key parts of the game for us. We were able to score (Billy Connelly at 1:05 of the third) and we didn’t give them too much offensively.”

Akim Aliu (16:28) and Mark Cullen (18:41) concluded the barrage in Rockford’s top goal-scoring outing of the season. Eleven different IceHogs had points.
