View Full Version : Greenville/SC team no more?

I read that the SC team is not going to be PBL this year. What was the real reasons behind the sudden change? Purely a funding issue? It seemed as if the team was moving forward but then abruptly stalled. Any additional info?

Whats the total team count at now?

I have a feeling that there is something different at work here than funding.

Travel issues in minor league basketball = disaster?

Hello, in Spain the economic recession is heavy, and in the ACB(after NBA, the best?, minor league has suffered great problems, and leagues make real cuts and reduced travel expenses, and it seems that things will be ok, will see. I think this PBL could be non a disaster, i don't think in this word in basketball, but it will be a lot of problems, teams will lose a lot of money. This is the third year, and they aren't in the good way, i know it's not an easy way, but sincerly, i repeat, this will be the last year, Halifax gone to the D-League and probably Rochester, the others, like the Panthers, except Manchester, Vermont and perhaps Quebec, they will join the new CBA. Time will tell. Thanks. I know USA is bigger than Spain.

PBL teams do not play in Puerto Rico ... Puerto Rico Captains will be touring PBL cities ... PBL will be a case similar to the USA All Stars team in IBL...Las Vegas and Oklahoma situation do not know... In this respect, the organization of the IBL may be a case...IBL also is based on affordability for an owner. IBL owners get very efficient schedules--owners are guaranteed a maximum of one trip that requires air travel:
The IBL recruits teams in different areas, so that at a distance that can travel by car is several teams. To better understand our system, we put on such a schedule of 10 games for a team visiting:
Part 1), 2) and 3) competing in an area less than 100 miles away.
Matches 4), 5), 6) and 7) The team made his only trip annual plane dispute 4 games in 4 days, in cities close to each other.
Part 8 ), 9) and 10) are contested in an area less than 160 miles away.

Thanks

Why is everyone jumping to conclusions about Greenville? I mean, check out their website:

That link says the new Carolina Kings web site is coming Oct. 15. It's now Oct. 19th. Maybe next year.

Frank, PBL teams will play in Puerto Rico. This is not a travel team. The roster will change over the season due to FIBA, however, this is a solid franchise that should have a chance to win the championship in year one. I agree with Standard. The PBL will learn much from BSN.
I am also wondering where the SC guy went. I can assure you, he is not Zeke.

Found this on Peter Fluornoy from 2008:

I wonder what's going to happen to those people who bought shares in the Carolina Kings?

Turns out the issues I raised with how the shares would have been done were justified.

The PBL could learn much from the BSN in a perfect world. However, we're not in a perfect world. Egos are much of the equation. It wouldn't surprise me if the PBL feels the BSN could learn something from THEM. Afterall, it was a BSN team that came to play in the PBL. Not the other way around.

I hope it's not too late to change the name to the Greenville Kings. Dump the generic state name.

Looks like these guys signed up for the ABA. Seems like a good fit.

Expect the PBL to devote more useless time getting back at the ABA instead of improving problems within the PBL.

I see them listed on the ABA website, but from what I've heard they are not playing at all -- no ABA... nothing.

That's a switch. Greenville is listed on the ABA site and not playing, while the Phantoms are not listed and are playing this year!
Typical ABA!

I think initially they were thinking of switching to the ABA, but then decided to throw in the towel.

So they went from nothing to ABA to PBL to ABA to nothing all in one season. That might be a record.

I'm not sure who they is(of the two teams mentioned), but I was hoping that the Phantoms should have chosen the PBL.
I was told that their owner was a wise business man, but the choice to join this league highly puts that in doubt(imo).
As far as the Xplosion, their best season was their first. When they joined the CBA they were a good team on the court(making the playoffs two of their three seasons). If the X had honest owners, I'm sure they would still be around.
I feel bad for the fans down there, though.

That would make the most sense. Sit down somewhere and regroup. No need to rush into something (again) and blow money.

The SC website is back up. Pretty comical they STILL have references to the PBL, no updates, and their message board has some guy (not me, wished it was) really calling the owner out..

A few details:

Dear Fans and Sponsors,

Thank you for visiting our site and for sharing your support. We are both excited and disappointed to make the following announcements. The Carolina Kings will not be playing this season, but instead will launch November 2010 (This was our original intentions).

This decision is based upon our choice to not continue in the PBL but to join the ABA. Both the PBL and the ABA are great organizations and our decision is not based on any negative experience with the PBL.

When we first signed with the PBL we were under the impression that the Wilmington Seadawgs and the Augusta Groove would be playing in the PBL. The PBL did not mislead us to believe this. However, we believed this because the logos were still on the website. However, these two groups have chose to go a different direction. As a result, it would be financially difficult to compete in the PBL because we were going to be required to pay both our travel and that of the incoming team.

Our decision to switch leagues has left us with a legal obligation. Our contract with the PBL stated that we could not play basketball with any other league in Greenville, SC for 1 year. This will allow us to be eligible for play June 1st 2010.

The exciting news is that despite our 11 month delay, we will be able to bring the excitement of the ABA to Greenville. We will be in the most competitive division of minor league basketball today. With the closeness of the teams, we will be able to bring competitive games at a lower cost.

Despite our team not being eligible to play professional basketball until November, we are not going to wait that long to get involved in the community. We are going to put together a team over the next three weeks that will allow us to visit schools and play exhibition games as well.

In closing, we were looking forward to playing basketball this season. However, we feel it is better to make sure it is done the right way for long term success. Thank you for your time and support.

almost feel bad for them. the teams there were supposed to be in the cluster (this is the STABLE PBL were are talking about here) a left them out by themselves. Then they realize while the PBL might be the league they prefer there are no teams nearby and the league wants them to pay the visitors to travel to them.

Would be nice to see the PBL act like adults and let them play in the WBA or something this spring/summer. Certainly would be better for the PBL's image in my mind.... especially with the legal issues with the ABA.

If you're going to take a season off, this is the time to do it. It might work out, but that's a fairly dumb contract clause if there is no buyout opportunity.

I would never join a league based on if a teams logo was posted on the PBL's website. Should have done a little investigating first. There were teams on the old website that were from the first year and had left.

Yeah, it really seems like poor planning. You would assume that they would have:
a) Asked the PBL office
b) Asked the Sea Dawgs and the Groove
c) Used google to figure out that the Groove closed up shop half way through the season.

Exactly. They should consider doing something else besides launching/operating a basketball team -- basket weaving -- then again, I'm not sure if they have the intellectual capacity. Pitiful.

They've had ZERO credibility from the start. You should have seen the comments from that guy on their message board calling out the "owner" on his past.

Also, the stories about them in Timmons Arena (where Furman plays) and that they were going to have Tree Rollins as coach were in the Greenville papers.

Now he's supposedly in the mother of all scam leagues. I feel sorry for NOBODY that ever gets involved with the ABA.

This guy's credibility locally is KAPUT.

1. Carolina had no contract with PBL

3. Due Diligence showed many problems in Carolina

They were just trying to make themselves look good by saying that they could not field a team for another year. Basically shifting the blame to the PBL and buying themselves time. I don't think the PBL would care if the Carolina Kings played basketball in 2010 -- just not in the PBL. Beyond that, the Carolina Kings have already torched the Greenville market -- any slim chance that they had was totally blown to pieces by their immature, erratic, and unprofessional behavior. I wonder if those guys who tried out for the team got their money back? What about those who may have bought shares in the team? Hmmmm....

Maybe, but did the league ever announce the Kings (as opposed to the Thunderbirds)? I can't find via Google a league release on them ever. Seems to me that A1 might have a point.

I can't recall it all, but didn't the PBL make some press release denouncing some Italian venture that claimed ties with the PBL?

In any event, it was public knowledge that this team CLAIMED to be a part of the PBL. IF they were never approved, there should have been some sort of public statement from the PBL warning people. In fact, there still isn't.

Obviously I don't know for sure, but it seems to me like the PBL was more involved with this SC team than they will let on.

Remember the King's justification for naming their team according to their state rather than Greenville? They had the same information that Mark King had. I would wager that these guys had a number of talks with the PBL.

Add that to the fact that it was common knowledge that the team was promoting itself as a part of the PBL both in the media and on this board, the PBL still never acted.

The Thunderbirds spent as much (actually more) time as the Kings being considered but not acknowledged, only being announced days before the draft. Since due diligence wasn't done on the Thunderbirds, then this team should have suffered the same pre-announcement fate as the Kings (IMO). My point is that both teams were given the impression by PBL brass they would be joining the league.

Exactly the same incident I was thinking of. The PBL was quick to denounce that team as not being sanctioned by the league and threatened legal actions. Not so with the Carolina Kings.

I'm in total agreement. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the PBL was instrumental in getting the Carolina Kings to push-up their start schedule. The Kings have hinted as much a few times.

ken- you hit the nail right on the head. The PBL knew and hoped and when the team failed, the PBL distanced themselves. Also, what about the Florida Flight? PBL this, PBL that. Lets see if the PBL stops their association with the Flight is the Flight does not take off.

It would be of interesting to see what Mark King has to say. He was going to play for them this year. I was told the league was the one that asked them to start there team this year. They were not ready. If there is one thing we all know for sure, it is you can't take the leagues word for much.

I saw a picture of the Rochester Brass. Is Carrie from the league part owner of the Rochester team as well? She was in that picture. Is there anybody from the league office that does not have a connection with one of the teams in this league. How do you make decissons and it not be a conflict?

CHris902

I also have a hard time believing that the PBL never told them that they were playing this year, even if it was never officially said publicly.

I don't think that the PBL has totally disassociated itself from the Thunderbirds, and I am pretty sure that Vegas were officially announced well before the draft. I remember hearing a vegas radio show with Doyle and Sev talking about how excited they were about the Vegas tea.

Of course, that definitely doesn't excuse what happened with the Vegas team and I am sure that the PBL will just pretend none of this ever happened if they don't suit up next year (and it's safe to say it's more likely than not that they won't play).

These new teams need to do some investigating before they get involved with any league. If they did they would not be involved with the PBL for sure with their track record!
