AUSTIN, Texas – The Austin Turfcats announced today that they are leaving the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) and have signed a letter of intent to join the Indoor Football League (IFL) for competition during the 2010 season.

Turfcats Vice-President and General Manager Ronald Oswalt said, “We thank the SIFL for helping us successfully jump-start professional indoor football in Austin. However, as we started to look ahead to 2010 and the long-term success of the sport in the Austin market, we took the time to explore every opportunity. Recent developments, including the shutdown of the AFL and af2, have allowed the IFL to position itself to become a true national league. This move allows the Turfcats to benefit from regionalized competition within an expanded Lonestar Division. We look forward to joining in that success in 2010 and beyond.”

IFL Commissioner Tommy Benizio added, “We are very pleased at the prospect of adding the community of Austin to our league and the Turfcats organization to our family. They are a premiere team and will greatly enhance the IFL.”

More details will be released in early October, at a media event to be announced. Information will also be available on the team's website, at www.turfcats.com.

Do you have what it takes to be a professional cheerleader? Does the thought of performing in front of 5,000 fans get you excited? Do you have the skills and talent to be a role model on and off the field? If you have a passion for dance, the Austin community, and sports... you might just have what it takes to be a member of the Lady Cats dance team.

The Austin Turfcats will be holding auditions for the 2010 Lady Cats dance team over the weekend of October 24-26. The first two days of auditions will be held at Austin Cheer Factory, while the Monday night finale will be held at a location to be announced (and open to the public).

There will also be 4 prep classes held before the tryouts to help you learn some dance moves and get to know the other ladies. They will be held October 12, 14, 19, and 21 from 7 to 9 pm at the YMCA Southwest of Austin. Cost is $20 per class. If you attend all 4 of the prep classes you will be able to attend auditions for free.

In addition to providing entertainment at the Turfcats' home games and cheering on the team, the Lady Cats are called upon throughout the season to make a number of Turfcats promotional appearances. These appearances range from community and charity events to performing in and around the Austin metro area and Central Texas.

Do you have the six figures of extra cash the team will need to survive in the IFL?

Do you have the doubled-or-more attendance at much higher ticket prices the team will need to think about not losing a quarter-million dollars in the IFL?

How can people with this much money have so little business sense?

I guess the SIFL budget outlined by god wasn't good enough for them.

Not that much more. It's just that some people just like to grossly over-exagerate that which they know absolutely nothing about.

At least in the IFL, the Turfcats can rest assured that all games will be played and that all the teams that they play against will be properly insured.

Brandy:

Why don't we save each other and the message board users a lot of time and grief and do our entire spiel right now?

You'll trash Thom. I'll provide my opinion of Tommy.

You'll bring up every minute detail of everything that went wrong with the SIFL and I'll counter with all the fun you had last season with the IFL.

We'll both agree that my PR efforts were the best of the leagues.

You'll take a cheap shot at my dental work and I'll do my best to refrain from commenting about your lack of social grace but drop a less than subtle but creative shot anyway.

Everyone will get disgusted at both of us. The thread will die in a day or two. And everyone will think you're a jerk and I'm a hothead.

Now Brandon, I want to ask you a serious question. Isn't all this unneccesary drama detrimental [You went to Permian. You can handle a four-syllable word] to the sport. Why are you owners so thick-headed and unwilling to work together?

I'm not aware of any poaching going on Dannyboy, at least on my part. Maybe you should ask your boy Thom Hager that question. The man has been trying his hardest since day one to get me to bring my teams over to the SIFL. If that's not poaching, I don't know what is.

Why are indoor football leagues continuing to poach one another instead of co-operate?

I can answer that one easily (and even do it without personal attack or insult ever since the demise of the NIFL and the EIEIFL-O). 1. Money, 2. Ego, 3. No governing body in minor league professional football (ala baseball's National Association) (no. 3 also goes back to no. 1 and no. 2). As was said in the gosh-awful movie "Hardbodies" (I can't believe I can remember this), "Everyone's looking for the BBD (the bigger, better deal)."
It would be nice, but impractical, if some indoor football czar were to dictate rules and assign every team to a league and division that would make sense financially and geographically. Until that happens, the patchwork and competition between leagues will continue.

Here's my opinion, and thanks for asking - lol

No matter what the name of the league is, the 50 yard game is a niche sport ignored, and worse yet, rejected by the masses. Even during good economic times leagues have struggled with financial viability. It's built off of discretionary income. The industry needs to convince people it's a better dollar for dollar entertainment value versus the many other options pulling at their purse strings. Even the sponsors/advertisers aren't willing to spend/support the sport unless it can put Butts in the seats to see/hear their advertisements.

I've never understood why the leagues themselves and their fans try puffing out their chest to brag how much better they are and smack the so called competition. It's not like two grocery stores in the same town, or coke vs pepsi in the same aisle competing for the same customer. occasionally league markets overlap, but for the most part you get what you get in your area and don't have the choice of picking which version of the game you get to attend locally.

Everyone in the industry should be trying to put a good face on the sport itself. if you can't say anything good about another team or league, it might just be best, as mom always told me, not to say anything at all.

I realize many people have changed teams and leagues, some ego's or personalities have clashed. So what, does that mean we throw professionalism and decorum out the window? Maybe some casual sports fans are put off over the constant slamming and bickering that seems to be common place on the various forums and league offices.

I was taught you show you're better by your actions and the product you produce, not by who can out smack who in the publics eye.

I've followed many different leagues over the past several decades. I've enjoyed every single league that has come to my market. When no team was here, I still tried to follow along through the websites and forums. I don't understand the so called fans that shun a team in their town just because it's not the league they prefer.

I feel the entire industry needs to stay positive about the sport itself. Bashing each other degrades the entire sport in the eyes of the people we need to chase and convert into paying fans. Trying to prove one league is a joke or inferior only bolsters the negative opinion of the naysayers. It's hard to sell widget "A1" to the public when you tell them widget "A2" is crap. Don't try so hard to prove they're worse, try to prove the sport is worth following.

Duliban Returns For Second Season With Turfcats
October 22, 2009

The Austin Turfcats announced today that Head Coach Chris Duliban has signed a contract to remain with the team through the 2010 season.

Duliban has years of experience in both indoor football and the Austin area. After growing up in the Houston area, he earned a football scholarship to the University of Texas. Following his college career, he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry in 1986 and spent three years with the Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills. After retiring from the NFL, Duliban found his way to a head coaching position at Hyde Park Baptist in 1996.

His indoor experience began with the Austin-based Texas Terminators of the Indoor Professional Football League, as well as a stint with the Intense Football League’s Centex Barracudas of Belton.

In their 2009 campaign as a part of the Southern Indoor Football League, Duliban led the Turfcats to a 10-3 record in the league’s inaugural season.

“I am proud of the work we did as a team in 2009, and look forward to the challenges of moving to the IFL for the 2010 season,” Duliban said. “After coming so close to bringing home Austin’s first professional sports championship last season, I look forward to running the table again and taking control of the IFL’s Lonestar Division.”

The team’s schedule for the 2010 season will be announced in November.

Turfcats Announce First Open Tryouts November 14
October 23, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Turfcats announced today that they have scheduled their first free agent tryout camp of the 2010 season for Saturday, November 14, 2009. The camp will be held at Kelly Lane Middle School in Pflugerville, located at 18900 Falcon Pointe Blvd. The camp will be under the direction of Turfcats Head Coach Chris Duliban and his coaching staff.

The camp format will consist of a variety of physical tests, including the 40 yard dash, 20 yard shuttle and the standing long jump. Participants will be timed and measured in all of these events. After an evaluation of each participant’s times and scores, the group will be reduced to a number of individuals who will be asked to participate in select physical drills. Another evaluation will leave the remaining to participate in skill drills which are related to indoor football. There will not be any contact drills.

The cost of the camp is $65 cash per individual; those who pre-register at Turfcats.com will receive a discounted rate of $50. Registration begins at 10:00am and ends promptly at 11:00am. A thirty minute period of supervised warm-up drills will follow. Testing will begin at 11:30am.

The camp is open to anyone who has completed their college eligibility and is physically able to perform the drills. A waiver and release form will be signed by all participants stating that they are physically able to participate and not hold the Austin Turfcats liable for any injury suffered during the camp.

Participants need to provide their own workout attire. Shorts and t-shirts along with turf or tennis shoes are recommended for the camps. Rubber molded football cleats no longer than one half inch will be permitted for tryouts. Metal football cleats are absolutely forbidden and anyone wearing them will not be allowed to participate. Participation in the free agent camp is not an offer of employment, but merely an evaluation. The Austin Turfcats are not responsible for travel or lodging expenses. Food will not be provided.
