I would think that there would be some ethical problems involved but I also know you need to take help where you can get it.

And this is the minor leagues.

Is this a common practice?

HAC-If you remember, The Oklahoma Storm were owned by an agent with several of his better known clients supplying (wink-wink) funding.

Ethical, not really.. But remember we are talking about the USBL. They are going to take the funding whereever they can get it from.
