THE NFL Europe League's newest team will be known as the Cologne Centurions, it was announced today.
Cologne (Köln), Germany's oldest city, was named last month as the site for the league's new franchise. And weeks of speculation about the team's identity ended when NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue unveiled the team's logo in a ceremony at the city's Römish-Germanisches Museum.
"We expect the name and logo to be well received locally," said Commissioner Tagliabue. "They project a powerful image and reflect the historic nature of the city Cologne.
"We have already experienced outstanding support from the city and the local community and now that we have named the team we can really begin building towards the Centurions' inaugural season."
The Centurions will play their first game on the road at local rivals Rhein Fire on Saturday April 3 before opening their home season against the World Bowl champion Frankfurt Galaxy at the 50,000-capacity RheinEnergieStadion a week later.
The Lord Mayor of Cologne, Fritz Schramma, said: "I love the name of our new NFL Europe League team. It represents the 2,000-year history of Cologne. We are very happy that we have another major team in an up and coming sport to put alongside teams like 1. F.C. Köln, KEC (ice hockey) and RheinEnergie Köln (basketball)."
Cologne is Germany's oldest major city, dating back to the days of the Roman Empire, which is reflected in the choice of name and the team logo, featuring a helmeted Centurion soldier.
The logo features the city of Cologne's colours of red and white, with the lettering appearing on a black background.
The team uniform will also be a mixture of those colours. The Centurions' jerseys for home games will be predominantly black, with red and white trim, while the players will wear red helmets and white pants.
