Koyotes grab win with rally, 34-28

The Capital-Journal

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Kenny Shields caught a last-second 21-yard touchdown pass from Chris Coffin as the Kansas Koyotes took sole possession of the American Professional Football League race by beating the Iowa Blackhawks 34-28.

The game-winning TD came with only six seconds to play.

The Koyotes (3-0) trailed the entire first half before taking a 19-16 lead on Donnell Smith's 6-yard TD run at the 10:33 mark of the third quarter. The Blackhawks (1-1) took control with a touchdown and a field goal to lead 25-19, but the Koyotes came right back with Smith's second scoring run -- this one from the 3 -- to take a 26-25 lead early in the fourth quarter.

That set up Corey Harold's 41-yard field goal that gave Iowa its final lead, 28-26, at 11:42.

Koyotes coach Warren Seitz said the team's winning TD capped an outstanding team performance in front of a boisterous crowd of 1,906 at the Mid-America Center.

"Winning on the road is what's exciting," Seitz said. "It was a good crowd and they were loud. It was a great atmosphere."

The Coffin-to-Shields connection also worked for a 24-yard TD pass in the second quarter.

Seitz was pleased with the defense, which made several key plays down the stretch.

"The defense played well in the second half," he said. "We made a couple key stops. Eric Taylor had a sack at the five-minute mark (in the fourth quarter), we force a fumble on the play and then missed a field goal.

"Then they make the long field goal, setting up our winning TD."

The Koyotes suffered some injuries late, and Washburn product Tyler Schuerman, normally a quarterback, was playing at wide receiver at the end of the game.

 Iowa got that close. They could've won it. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Maybe you can tell, but I'm a Blackhawks fan.
