Rockford, IL)-The RiverHawks are ready to fly from the Frontier League to another independent league. Next year they'll join the Northern League.

RiverHawks' General Manager Josh Olerud tells WTVO that some legal issues still have to be worked out before the move becomes official. But he says everything should be firmed up in the next week or two.

The Northern League, like the Frontier League is an independent professional league. That means its teams are not affiliated with any Major League franchies. But Olerud says the Northern League is clearly a step-up from the Frontier League in many ways.

"The move to the Northern League is a more polished player. They're guys that have been to the Major Leagues or are on the cusp of being in the Major Leagues. This is a big step. They're all big metro-area cities. It's very centralized."

The Northern League offers some clear rivalries for the RiverHawks. The Schaumburg Flyers, Joliet Jackhammers, and the Gary Railcats are within easy driving distance. The other teams currently playing in the league are the Kansas City T-Bones, the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks and the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

In addition to the Riverhawks the Northern League will also add the Lake County Fielders next year out of Zion, Illinois. One of that teams' owners is actor Kevin Costner.

This is excellent news for the NL if it is indeed the case!

It is true, I posted a story in the Frontier League forum about it the other day.

This is definitely terrific news for the NL. I just hope Burnsville can get their act together so there can be more teams closer to Winnipeg and Fargo. (More road trips for me!)
