PLPA accepts deal
By Andrew McKay

The NLL strike is over after the PLPA accepted a counter-offer from the NLL late Wednesday night.

Under the terms of the agreement, the 2 sides have agreed to play under last year's contract with the following changes:

1) The removal of non-dress pay provision

2) A one year contract

3) The inclusion of practice pay in player salaries

4) A slight modification to the travel reimbursement

The PLPA had earlier offered to play the 2003-04 season under the terms of the expired collective bargaining agreement.

In an e-mail to NLL commissioner Jim Jennings, PLPA president Peter Schmitz said the association is willing to play the upcoming season under the terms of the expired CBA, as long as restrictions to the payment of non-dress players are removed.

The PLPA also agreed that the revenues it used to accrue under the terms of the old CBA, in the form of payment from the league, would instead be placed in escrow to be paid out to the players directly.

According to a source, the deal has been approved by the PLPA executive and player reps, and awaits approval from a conference call to be held later tonight.

Under the terms of the PLPA’s proposal, “the expired Collective Bargaining Agreement will apply, in its entirety, to the upcoming 2003-2004 season, with the exception that any monies otherwise due the PLPA under Section 6.8 (Payments to the Association including franchise fees, sponsorships, licensing programs, television programs and All-Star games profits) shall be placed in an escrow account for the benefit of the players.”

Schmitz said the PLPA would accept the league’s offer as lnog as the non-dress provision was also removed.

“ Simply put, we are prepared to play under the terms of the expired CBA, with the non-dress pay provision removed. All other PLPA bargaining proposals are being removed from the table.”

How do you have so much info into the NLL? I'm not criticizing because alot of what you said was very true about the league. I, personally, am a player in the league and was just wondering on how you received facts and figures about our CBA and proposed CBA contracts? It doesn't matter to me I'm actually just wondering what higher ups you know? I appreciate anyone supporting the league! Any other questions or concerns you have feel free to ask.

I've been a faithful supporter of the MILL/NLL for over 10 years and an on again/off again poster on various NLL message boards. (The old NLL board from their dear, departed belax.com site and the humongous one at http://www.wingszone.com .) Much of my info is from following the local fans and their newspaper reports and team press releases. Again, I have followed the league and the sport for many years.

The last two things I have posted have been news releases from the NLL and other places.

I've been skeptical about the new California and Arizona teams surviving because of A) the strike and these being brand new NLL markets and B) the NLL/MILL's long track record of franchises dying if they didn't start winning right away. (See Montreal, Ottawa, Charlotte, Syracuse, Washington, Albany, New Jersey, and the Ontario Raiders for a reference.)

I think the NLL should continue to look to Canadian markets to build itself with all the Canadian National tv deals they have the potential is great. I also think places like Minnesota, St. Louis and Kansas City would be good for the league as well. Going totally coastal without first establishing itself in the middle of North America could be fatal. (Vancouver and Calgary aside.)

I'm still a big indoor lax fan and continue to support the NLL game. I hope they figure out what's wrong with this picture and can right their ship before it's too late.
