Makos Cancel 2009 Exhibition Season
July 9, 2009 - Due to a lack of game field turf availablity and opponent scheduling conflicts,
the Palm Beach Makos announced this afternoon that they will cancel their 2009 exhibition
season schedule. The Makos had hoped to use this summer as an introduction of their team
to area indoor football fans in preparation for projected league play in the spring/summer
of 2010. But problems persisted with oppononents failing to confirm their travel and arrival
dates as scheduled, and a failure to secure an adequate and safe indoor playing surface.
Makos officials stated that the remainder of their effiorts will now focus on marketing and
preparation for the 2010 indoor football season. Palm Beach is expected to make a deal
to join other indoor teams from Florida who are expected to become members of the SIFL
next season. The SIFL headquarters is in Lake Charles, LA and has been in existence
for only a few years. The SIFL has been applauded by industry officials as a "solid" league
with a good business model and very competent adminsitrative staff.
FAU Arena is a 5,000-seat multi-purpose arena (2,400 capacity for indoor football)
located on the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU). In addition
to being the home of your Palm Beach Makos, the arena also serves as the home
to both the men and women's basketball teams at FAU, the “main” tennants of the
building, known as "The Burrow".
Originally built in 1984, FAU Arena has recently undergone an extensive $9 million
renovation that was completed in 2007. The renovation included many upgrade to
its facilities, fan and player amenities.
