KALAMAZOO - After joining a 20-team league and eyeing an NHL affiliation, the Kalamazoo Wings hired Dan Belisle as the team's vice president of hockey operations on Tuesday.
Belisle, who has 24 years experience in hockey management, 12 of them in the ECHL, will have "several big tasks," K-Wings president Paul Pickard said.
"He will be setting up our scouting systems with, hopefully, a scout in the East, a scout in the Midwest and he'll handle the West Coast," Pickard said. "He'll also work with (K-Wings coach) Nick (Bootland) on recruiting and be auditing transactions with the players' union.
"If we affiliate, which we're working on, he'll be responsible for the reconciliation of player call-ups to the parent club."
Pickard said Belisle is also expected to provide scouting reports on every player in the ECHL to build a partnership with the parent club in addition to giving the K-Wings a good "finger on the pulse of talent" in the ECHL when it comes to trades and free agency.
Belisle, who was the stick boy in the movie "Slap Shot," was with the Victoria Salmon Kings the last four years and has served on the ECHL rules committee the last nine years.
The teams he's worked for have made the playoffs 11 of his 12 seasons in the league.
He started his career with the Detroit Red Wings as director of amateur hockey in 1984.
"In the playoffs, he'll prescout opponents and potential opponents," Pickard said. "He will allow (general manager) Wade Welsh to focus more on the business side and give Nick the opportunity to focus on coaching."
Also on Tuesday, Welsh was given the added title of K-Wings vice president.
