View Full Version : Great Game
Just wanted to say that the BUCs and the Turfcats really played a good game last night and I am proud to say that our BUCS came out on top. I would bet that last nights game was the longest game that the Turfcats have ever played, since thier time keeper doesnt seem to know to work the clock in Austin.
And the next time that we see the Turfcats, it will be in the playoffs. I am very pleased to see a GOOD rivalry in the new league. Every league needs good old fashioned rivalry's and this reminds me of the BUCS/Odessa rivalry. GOOD TIMES!!!

It was a very good game... barring any surprises on either side, I predict Austin will be back in Lake Charles the weekend of the 25th for the championship.
But enough about this clock BS... if there really was a timing error, why wasn't there a complaint filed with the league? Why didn't the refs catch it? The bottom line is this - LA didn't want it badly enough back on May 9, just like the Turfcats didn't want it badly enough last night. (Let's be honest... they REALLY didn't want it, based on that 2nd half performance.) Save the excuses and just accept it.
HAHAHAA Dude.. there were complaints filed with the league, about the clock and the official's there in Austin. So, just because you dont know about them doesnt mean that they dont exist. I agree that we were asleep the first three quarters of the game there in Austin, but the clock also didnt stop for the first 16 minutes of the game. I was there and saw it, and the questionable calls. Although, its the calls situation isnt just happening in Austin, it happens with us too.
So just know that although the clock things was and still is BS, we should have let you guys get that close. Fact of the matter is that we should have been 30+ better than you guys last night. Our guys arent focusing like they should be, but thats not an excuse. A win is a win, doesnt matter how it looks, case and point ya'lls three point win in Austin.
So get ready to buckle up because the BUCS only get better later in the season, lets hope you do too!

I really appreciate the fact all of the `Bucs games are streamed live. Hopefully all of the arenas will work on installing a wifi feed so the league can show every game in every arena.
This isn't an attack, just an observation hoping some improvements can be made.
The announcer last night was pretty bad. Smacking his gums and talking with a mouth full of pizza, then laughing about it? Let's chew and swallow before speaking please. He seemed more focused on conversation with himself than the game. He often didn't know the down and distance, he seemed confused over many of the calls and plays on the field.
All night long he called the Austin QB Darren instead of DeRon, but then again he often seemed confused on what the `Bucs players names were or who was actually involved in the play. I'll give him credit for asking if he was pronouncing Robert Quiroga's name correctly.
Could I do better, probably not. Working on the professionalism and doing a little prep work will make the `Bucs and entire league in general look better.
Oh I agree, there are somethings that could be done better, but as far as the first year of this league, I think that things are doing alright. You will find that if you go to Lafayette, the lighting and the bleachers are HORRIBLE!! But the people are friendly and its generally a good time. So good luck on the rest of the year, and make sure you come to the game when we are playing for the championship.

I concur, Caballo. One of the things I really like about the AF2 is being able to watch the games on Nifty TV for free. I know the SIFL had looked into the B2 network, but that's pay per view at $10 a game - I'd be willing for 2 or 3 bucks, but $10? I don't know. Hopefully, the SIFL can come up with a good media solution. I think it's important to maintain fan interest.
As far as the announcer, I didn't watch it last night, but I have watched a couple of other games. Though it wasn't as bad as you were saying at those times. But it's these little niggling "unprofessionalisms" if you will, that can hurt the league overall. I can just see someone tuning in and saying...."Listen to this. Boy they sure do take this seriously, huh?" And they tell two friends and then they tell two friends and so on and so on. LOL. No one's expecting top rate announcers with the best color commentary, but I'm sure the SIFL can come up with something.
Anyway, congrats to the 'Bucs. I predict 'Bucs and 'Cats in the championship....boy I'm really going out on a limb on that one, huh? LOL.

I really miss going to Lake Charles, Always was a great game. Miss seeing friends. Miss my money at the Isle of Capri. Miss the great games. Always something to talk about from Lake Charles. It would be nice if Odessa and Lake Charles could get back in the same league.

Are the fans at the game listening to the same announcer as the streamed video audience? It wasn't the PA announcer I'm talking about. I think we were listening to different announcers, not sure. The one we were listening to even commented on the PA announcer missing the correct down, especially if there was a penaty in the series. I was thinking he doesn't have any right to poke at his mistakes - lol
And what's a jack Snipe? - haha
Yes, Coach Duliban and Cash are standup guys.

Diablo,
Snipe hunting is fun. Always caught a bunch and they are great grilled. You should try my recipe.
There are a bunch of them in the woods behind the Expo Center. Show up early for the playoff game (here's hoping we host it) and I will show you were. You and the girls can catch some and grill them up for the post game celebration.
They go great with Bud Light too.

You dont have to listen to me if you dont want. This is not an attack on you either but, No one pays me to do this, its a "Fan Broadcast" and the only sponsor brought me pizza. I dont pretend to be a professional announcer. The bottom line is if you want to listen live, you will have to deal with whatever I feel like doing.
Its people like you that really make me not want to put the effort into this crap it takes for nothing. Congrats for being the "Ultimate Fan"

Wow, Scott. from your history around the sport I wouldn't think this would hurt your feelings. I even prefaced it with "This isn't an attack, just an observation hoping some improvements can be made." and ended it with
"Could I do better, probably not. "
I didn't attack or get personal. I gave construcive criticism and personal observations/opinion. An outside view point is usally a good way to evaluate and decide for yourself if improvements could be made or if this is the best it can be. I'm pretty sure you've critisized some people about their job in an attempt to get a better effort, coach.
You saying, "Its people like you that really make me not want to put the effort into this crap it takes for nothing." If you really feel it's crap and are uspset about doing it for nothing then stop.
As a fan I was offering an unbiased opinion hoping you could use it to make inprovements, not to tell you it sucked. Small things to think about, the listener hears a completely different atmosphere than you think. We're in different realities of a blind listener vs someone watching. Implying chewing over your speaking is ok is telling. Taking it personal and making excuses and whine about my post shows a lack of caring for the service you provide or the listeners themselves. You aren't announcing in a bubble, there's an audience out there. Maybe you should look into another hobby if you don't care about what perspective the listeners are getting from your "show."
I was hoping it would result in some postivie communications and really expected you to care about ways of improving. I guess either you don't care about what the audience hears or think there's no room for improvement. Both scenarios are a sad way to approach your endeavor.
You might be right about maybe I should stop listening to your broadcast.
I'm truly disappointed in your attitude towards your responsibility as the announcer. It doesn't matter if you get compensated or not, you chose to accept doing it and a certain amount of professionalism and caring about it come along with the job.
Sorry for caring about the quality of the show, carry on.

"constructive and professional" would have been an email, not blasting me on a message board. After I thought about this a while I realized that i had more than 50 positive comments and thank you's that I really shouldn't let you two get the best of me. Carry on with whatever you want to say but email it to me too, as I don't read this but once every two months or so. This is exactly why.

Scott, you need to grow a thicker skin if you want to announce or write stories publically. You were not blasted by me on a message board, and saying you only read the forum every month or so is untrue. You do realize our names show up on the the bottom of the page when we're here don't you? You must realize all posts have a time/date stamp on them.

Many here are actually associated with the league or sport. We discuss things here and I wasn't aware your column or announcing gig was off limits.
Anytime you put yourself into the publics eye you have to expect a response, how you deal with it is what's important.
I too was glad to be able to watch the `Bucs play and the announcing was a bonus. many times all you get is the PA announcer, although some of the nifty games do use the radio broadcast. I thought you would be interested in a listeners perspective. Apparently not, you've said you don't care. You still feel mumbling through a couple slices of pizza is appropriate as that was one of the specific items you defended.
I think I'll take your advice and quit following the `Bucs games and listening to your announcing, if you don't care about it or the audience why should we listen. Most continually try to improve in all areas, it seems you're content with the statu quo and it's you that feel the need to defend it and accuse others with a difference of opinion. This will also have to include your blogs/articles which is sad for the league site because they could use the extra hits. we won't have to worry about the defunct site.
If you lose respect from loyal fans it does hurt the sport and league. If someone who cares about how the sport comes off to the public loses interest in certain aspects it does hurt the league. Combine all of the 50 yard leagues together and all you still have is a niche sport. There's not enough real fans to go around, we need waves of casual fans to buy tickets and enjoy the entertainment so we can still have a team/league for many years to come. Some would call it insecure, while others would call it arrogant. I call it disrespecting the league and sport to throw in the towel and not attempt to be open to ideas and try to work towards inproving what ever we can.
I am a fan of the entire league, I do care how it all comes across to the public. I was trying to be helpful, most would have seen it that way and not as an insult or attack. I even explained and spelled it out.
This isn't about you, it's about the league as a whole and your not caring about giving them a black eye. No email necessary, you would just delete without reading because it might hurt your feelings. I used to be a fan of your blog/articles, now that you told us how you feel about the fans I've lost interest. I'm disappointed, this is not how the front office staff described you. I guess there is a fine line between PR and BS. Sorry for trying to enjoy all aspects of the broadcast, carry on because your feelings are more important than the big picture of the total audience's perception of what was being put out to the public.
You've attempted to subtly smack me with your "Ultimate Fan" comment, which personally I don't care. But once again, when you publiclly represent the league it can back fire. My perspective on that is I'm just a regular diehard fan, not an ultimate fan and not a casual fan. Every team I've followed has many of us, every single person at the tailgates is just as big a fan as me. I'm not special, just one of many in the crowd. There's a reason leagues and teams have policies about how their associates use forums. There's a reason people get fined for comments made to the public or release information prematurely.
You can say You're not officially associated with the league but that's untrue.
You do a public broadcast of the games, this is approved by the league. the team you do it for is the founding team and owned by the founder of the league. Compensation doesn't matter, all teams have interns that work for free. yes, some get college credits, but many are flat out volunteers for free.
they are controlled by the same rules as the paid workers. What they say and how they act is a direct perspective impact on the team/leage by the fans/public.
I'm sorry, I thought you were a professional journalist and understood the behind the scenes ramifications. I now realize you're nothing more than what I am, a fan of the game and a long winded blogging hack. I can live with that title but am still open to critisim and use the opinions of others to attempt to improve my attitude and outlook over the big picture.
I ran on because it's something I care about. if I felt you were a jerk or it wasn't important I would have just blown you off 35 paragraphs ago.

Scott,
I thought I should explain my perception of the term "HACK" before you get your panties all in a knot that I've once again insulted you. No insult was intended, I'm told I'm pretty good at subtle insults myself but this was not the case here.
I have never taken any writing or journalism classes or training. Me writing the Turfcats fan blog this season is my first ever attempt at "Writing" and in my mind can't be considered as professional journalism. While I do attempt to incorporate the AP/neutral stance on may things it's clear I'm a fan of the Turfcats.
I try not to disrespect the league or any of it's teams in my articles, but bottom line it does come from the opinion stance of a fan, not a writer. thus I have no qualms of being included into the hack catagory and it doesn't insult me in the least.
Once you cross over into the professional world of writing it is perceived differently by the public and has a different set of responsibilities that go along with it. Getting upset over outsiders responses isn't much different than posting on a forum. There's no reason to take it personally because we can never please everyone, and personally we shouldn't try to.
My opinion was purly intended to be constructive criticism hoping to enable you to see the perception of others, giving you the opportunity to use the information in a positve manner, not insult.
My goal is to spread the word of the sport and league in a positive light. I have got carried away at times people let me know it. I've had some PM conversations with people about my attitude and have tried to take it in stride and use it to improve. Has it worked, I don't know but hope it has.
I try to use outside opinions to expand my views, and not as insults to my narrow minded views. I've still got a long way to go improving my own personality but I am trying.
