...paying attention to or even see what just went down in Yuma?
Some have been disbursed, but most of those kids who made it through two weeks of spring training, now out of a job. I had three invitees who had made the roster, ready to start playing opening night, who are now home and out of a job. :(
Interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this move...good, bad, or ugly...

W:confused:ell not sure of the situation in Yuma but this happens all the time. This is part of Minor League Baseball year in and year out. I personally am a Long Beach fan and a lot of the fan favorites are not playing this year with us.
Too early to see if the clubs made the best moves but should make a interesting year.

Not sure I can say I've ever witnessed anything like this happening...and never two or three days before the season was to open...but, I have seen some PRETTY strange dealings over the years...
An article to give you a little better idea, if you're not aware...

Quite a few things have already "happened"...
Staff firings
Players released, some who had made the roster, getting ready to play in two days, and also may have passed up on other opportunities, now rosters for other teams are pretty well set leaving little room to break in else where
Whole new team rides into Yuma getting ready to play in two days
etc
Granted, for the league as a whole, this may prove to be a solid move...but, man...talk about rough...

I agree that does sound a little rough but still too early to tell what all pans out. Might be good/bad but still a little early to tell. Maybe have a draft of the players that were just released?

Do you not read the posts in their entirety? hahaha
The disbursement of players has already happened, as I already mentioned. A few caught on else where, but quite a few of them were sent packing? Two of the three that I sent over were sent packing, and are both home. The other caught on with another club. Quite a few kids out of work, who have to go hunting...which we all know is hit and miss...

I consider myself a fan (and defender) of the GBL. That being said, they always play their cards close to the vest so many times things just happen (literally) overnight.
The concept of affiliation is interesting but it caught most by surprise. I feel bad for the kids who made the final roster only to be cut in the middle of the night two days before their first game. I think the right thing to do would be to tell these kids they may not have a job but that is not how the GBL operates. Any time things have changed in the league, check out the press associated with it. Many times they actually say the opposite of what is later determined to be true.
I've read every article I can find and here are some things I found:
1. If the hospitality tax would not have passed, the GBL would strongly consider moving the team. Did any of the Yuma fans know that?
2. This affiliation with Columbian baseball was planned for a long time but they wouldn't pull the trigger until the hospitality tax thing got sorted out; and if they decided to move the team they would have done the affiliation with another team. So either way, some kids who worked their butts off to make a team were set to play would lose their jobs.
So, bottom line, the kids should have been told but, obviously, doing so would have let the cat out of the bag which the GBL didn't want to do. I know the indy guys really get jerked around a lot but this one seems extra harsh considering what we know now.
The GBL website continues to be a disaster so in addition to not finding the current roster on the Yuma site, there are no transactions since May 19th making it very difficult to find out what happened to all the players.
For example, the GBL made a big deal out of signing Nippon Baseball minor leaguer Kawaguchi Yosuke, even calling him a "pitching phenom" (per the article still on the top of the Yuma page) and now there is no word where he went (he wasn't on any of the rosters on the team sites yesterday). I only followed that storyline due to my love for Japanese baseball but, as Monty pointed out, there are plenty of other guys who we have no idea where they are.
Be that as it may, I will still support the GBL but this action, though it will ultimately be a good thing, probably burned a lot of bridges.

The GBL makes a lot of decisions every day that we may like but this might not be a bad thing overall. We all get attached to these players but they come and go like everyone else.

....Why couldn't the league keep the "old" Yuma team together to replace the Potros as a road team? would make sense to me and avoid the unbalanced number of games teams are now playing in the GBL. they could've even played their home games at El Centro, San Luis, or Palm springs while being based out of Yuma

It definitely sucks what happened to the guys who thought they'd be playing for Yuma. And the short notice of it all really makes it hard. Long term however I think this will end up being positive for the GBL as a whole.
