You can now vote for our new CHL Team's Name. http://media.examiner.net/hockeycontest/vote/

Your options are:
Independence Pioneers
Independence Presidents
Independence Outlaws
Independence Ice Hawks
Independence Freedom
Missouri Mules
Missouri Maulers
Missouri Mavericks
Missouri Express
Missouri Bullfrogs

My disappointing thoughts:

The New Team in Allen, TX, is called the Americans. They are red, white and blue. You know if they use "Independence" in they name, they'll want to use those colors too.

KC already had a (failed) hockey team called the Outlaws.

Freedom isn't a "mascot." That's like the MLS's New England "Revolution."

Pioneers is gay.

The CHL already has an Ice Rays and an Ice Bats, so "no" on the Ice Hawks.

Bullfrogs?? Maulers?? Why???

Mules I get, at least that's the state mammal.

Dallas has the Mavericks. Let's be original.

The Pony Express was based out of St. Joe, so what does that have to do with Independence?

Of the 10 I think my favorite is the Independence Presidents. My reasons:
1) Minor League teams should have new/different names. Like the minor league baseball team the Savannah Sand Gnats, or the AHL team the Iowa Chops, or the T-Bones.
2) I want the team to go by "Independence" and not "Missouri." The team is here. It's not in Columbia, or Springfield or Jeff City...or St. Louis. I would think the city of Independence would like for it to be Independence.
3) Like I said earlier, when they go by Independence, they'll probably want to be red, white and blue. The presidents fits that.
4) When they go by "Presidents" I really wonder what they'll do for a mascot. I wanna see.

As my wife has pointed out, Independence is not the only city that has produced a president. But, is it the only city with bullfrogs? Or that has freedom?

Whatever they choose won't stop me from being a fan. Maybe I'll make a shirt, hat and sign anyway that say "Go Independence Trailers!"

How is Pioneers "gay" again? It ties in perfectly with the city's history (Oregon Trail's starting point!)

"Mules" is taken by Central Missouri University (NCAA Division II)-less than an hour away from Independence.

"Mavericks" was the name of a baseball team in the state (Mid-Missouri Mavericks)

But I see where you're from...really disappointed with almost all the names they picked (Are the experts sick with cholera? Maybe dysentery?)

I'm still trying to mull over a nickname, but I've got the slogan: "The Puck Stops Here" with a picture of Harry Truman in goalie gear (I hereby release the the team to use my idea without me suing them).

Outlaws could go with a Jesse James motif. If you wanted to be creative and historical, how about Bushwackers (it's too bad both Olathe and Shawnee Mission canceled arena projects, Independence could have had the Johnson County Jayhawkers as an arch rival).

Just stay away from Scouts (one of the worst NHL teams of all times). The most successful team in the area's history was the KC Blades. I saw a handful of Blades games.

The Allen club owners chose Americans, whereas the Independence held a contest with the Missouri Mavericks winning. With the contest, there was no clear leader, the Mavericks winning with a very small lead. Frankly, my grandson could do better with the names and logos...

But it doesn't matter anyway. Just as long as a club has a name and logo and colors.... is all that counts..... The vast majority of us would choose something different if we had to rename our current teams we support....

How bout the Independence Penance. Everyone would have to say 10 Hail Mary's,
before they enter the arena.

I'm sure there are quite a few players who probably need to do that. I like the alliteration, but the problem is Independence has more of a Mormon history (and still is the home to the Community of Christ, an off-shoot of the LDS),

How about the Flying Squirrels?

Oops... that's already taken by the new Richmond Eastern League team.

Ok, I wish that we had a team name that good. Try yelling "Lets Go Suuurrge", now that's most likely the worst name EVER!!!!
