The Acadiana Mudbugs opened up their inaugural season with a 37-29 win over the Austin Turfcats. The first game in SIFL history was played Saturday at the Travis County Expo Center in Austin, Texas.
Within two minutes, the Mudbugs led 7-0 due to a 43-yard pass to Calen Powell from Bo Bartik. To give them a 14-0 lead, Bartik threw a 20-yard pass to Jermaine Martin with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
In the beginning of the second quarter, Kemmie Lewis moved up the score to 20-0 after a 45-yard interception return. The Turfcats put three points on the board when Darren Brown made a 21-yard field goal. They received seven more points when the Turfcats Defensive Back Mycal Catchings recovered a 12-yard fumble.
With three seconds left on the clock in the second quarter, Bartik made a 15-yard pass to J. Martin to conclude the first half with a 27-10 lead.
Total offensive yards by the end of the second quarter were 154 for the Mudbugs and 98 for the Turfcats.
In the third quarter, the Turfcats scored six points due to Derrick Wallace’s 50-yard kickoff return. This brought the Turfcats within nine points of the Mudbugs. Shortly after, Lucas Murphy with the Mudbugs kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the Mudbugs a 30-16 lead. The final score for the third quarter was 30-23 due to the Turfcats’ running back Keith Clay’s four-yard run from the five-yard line.
The Turfcats came one-point short of a tie, bring their score up to 30-29 because of Wallace’s 50-yard missed field goal return. To ensure a cushion pad, Bartik threw a 14-yard pass to Dustin Martin to give the Mudbugs a 37-29 lead.
The Mudbugs’ offense was lead by Antonio Logan’s 43 yards in kick returns, Bartik’s 12 rushing yards and wide receiver J. Martin’s 76 yards receiving. Total offensive yards for the Mudbugs was 209. Defensively, Mitch Cradt lead the night with 6.5 tackles and held the Turfcats to 174 yards total offense.
The Mudbugs will host the Texas Pirates next Sat., April 25 at Blackham Coliseum. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
