The Vegas press is notorious for being hard on minor leagues, but this snippet takes the prize.

Roy Hammonds, the new "owner" of Las Vegas' latest rumored minor-league pro basketball team, said the reason he hasn't told anybody that our city would have an entry in a 7-team remnant of a league calling itself the American Basketball Association -- even though the other six teams began playing two weeks ago -- is that he "didn't want to hear" how this team, like all the others of its ilk, wouldn't make it here. So he'll have to read it instead: The Rattlers won't make it here, even if they do find a place to play their home games before Dec. 22, the date of their scheduled home opener. If no high school or middle school gym is available, I guess they can always spring for some nets and use the rims at Sunset Park. ...

One of two news releases posted on the ABA website, dated Nov. 7, trumpets the Long Beach Jam's signing of 5-foot-9 Yuta Tabuse, said to be the best point guard in Japan, which is kind of like being the best blues guitarist in Idaho. Let's see, the old ABA had Dr. J., George Gervin, David Thompson, Rick Barry, Dan Issel, George McGinnis, Connie Hawkins, et al, and it didn't survive. So forgive me if I don't see the "new ABA" riding the coattails of Yuta Tabuse to long-term viability, regardless of how many baskets Master P sinks in Tijuana and Juarez. ... No. 4 on the list of nine "positives" the ABA is promoting on its website to counteract several negative articles is that the league "has booked hundreds of hotel rooms," thereby boosting the local economies in its league cities, two of which are in Mexican border towns. The story did n't say whether the league actually had paid for the rooms. While I have never stayed at the Tijuana Hilton or the Juarez H! yatt, I'm sure they are lovely, provided you don't drink the water. ...

Here's a follow up article...

Last week, a published report said there would be several "major announcements" regarding the Las Vegas Rattlers, our rumored team in the what remains of the born-again ABA. The Rattlers did play a game last week, losing 120-91 to Juarez.

According to a TV news report, rapper Master P (college basketball fans may remember him as Percy Miller from the University of Houston), Las Vegas' star attraction, did not play at Juarez after members of his posse were detained at the border for carrying concealed weapons.

As for those announcements ... well, we're still waiting. At this point, the Rattlers and the league itself look more shaky than bungalow on stilts above the San Andreas Fault. ... But at least the Rattlers have a player on the roster you've heard of ... for basketball, that is. Mark Jackson, the former St. John's and longtime NBA point guard, supposedly will play for Las Vegas, provided it can find a high school gym to play in after sixth-period gym class.

Ouch!!!

The Vegas team lost to Long Beach last night and my source tells me it was a good game. I hope they have a sucessful season, I have a home town player on that team John Jones, who played well in the game.

Master P is really just a promotional stunt but i'm sure it sells tickets. (I would rather listen to some old motown than Master P ).

Story of the game from the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Apparently the Jam didn't play all that well.

Since you almost never see a box score from this league, it's impossible to tell if Master P is playing if you're not actually there. Fan-friendly league that ABA is.

And he apparently didn't sell all that many tickets - only 987 announced. Still, for this league on a Tuesday night, that's miles ahead of a lot of other places.

Geez! :?

A home crowd of more than 900 would look mighty nice for the CBA Great Lakes Storm about now. Monday night's game threw less than 300.

The Rattlers' page at ABAlive now lists the team's arena as the Las Vegas Events Center, 121 E. Sunset Road.

I'm not sure the Las Vegas Events Center exists. That was going to be the name of the new downtown arena that the hockey team was going to play in, but it's called the Orleans Arena, and it's not at 121 East Sunset Road. It's at 4500 West Tropicana Avenue. That's an actual venue. And I would imagine it would be hard for the ABA to get dates there.

121 East Sunset Road is the All-American Sportpark Pavillion, described as "A place that combines an amusement park and spectator sports with pool tables, racing, golfing, baseball, rock climbing, and more."

Apparently it has a small arena in it:

"The centerpiece of the All-American SportPark is the All-Sport Arena, a 15,000-square-foot, 2,500-seat arena, home to roller hockey and Pop Warner football leagues, as well as regional and national ESPN-sponsored events and broadcasts."

Can't find anything else. Their old website, www.sportparkvegas.com, doesn't exist anymore.

Near as I can tell, they're going to be playing in a roller rink. A fricking roller rink.

Roller Derby has more credibility at this point, though.

I stand corrected. Apparently the Las Vegas Events Center IS what was called the All-American Sport Park at one time.
