Re-Name Edmonton's Baseball Team Contest

It's a new era of professional baseball in Oil Country with Edmonton's Golden Baseball League franchise joining the Edmonton Oilers family. It's time to wipe the home plate clean and start fresh including a new team name. Fans can enter the Re-Name The Team Contest and one lucky winner will receive a Luxury Suite for baseball's opening night on May 21st! Contest closes Friday March 6th. This name kind of grows on you...I hate to see it go.

My choice was the Edmonton Toolpushers (can read "Pushers" on the jerseys).

Why? Because a toolpusher is the head of an oil refinery (kinda like "Generals" is for army and "Admirals" for navy)

I suggested Northerners. Why? Edmonton is the northernmost metro area in North America. They could use an "N" with a compass or something like that, perhaps, for their logo.

I like the name too! It'll grow on you...besides are you going to care about the name when your at Telus Field, enjoying a beer and hotdog with family and friends on a glorious summer day or evening...I think not! It's great to have the grand game stay in Edmonton. I was afraid of Telus Field staying empty for awhile.I'm looking forward to a very affordable and entertaining GBL year!! Go Capitals!

To be honest, I really dislike the name "Capitals". Here's why:

1. Edmonton is a hockey town, and the name Capitals already has very strong hockey-connotations for an opposing (albeit Eastern) team. Who in Edmonton doesn't think Bondra, Liut, Gartner, Hunter, Ciccarelli, Beaupre, Ridley, and Ovechkin when they hear the name Capitals?

2. The name "Capitals" speaks to Edmonton's growing inferiority complex. I'm sure most of Edmonton doesn't feel this way, but the Lowe/Katz group seems to think they have to try extra-hard to sell Edmonton (like that DVD they sent out to NHL player's agents) ever since the press decided that Pronger left Edmonton because his wife didn't like it there. Edmonton is a fine city without the desperate promotion.

Looking on the bright side, though, at least they didn't spell Capitals with a K, or end it with a Z. You never know.

a inferiority complex ... really, is that what you got out of this name ... I've lived in Edmonton for a couple of years now and have family down in the Calgary area. I truly don't sense this "growing" inferiority complex. Both cities are getting bigger and have different things to offer different people.
Politically speaking, we're the capital city and that's it. There is no dark, sinister motive by Katz to manipulate the egos of Edmontonians. It's just a name. .. and much better than Cracker Cats :)

I'm looking forward to a great season and I'm just glad baseball will be back in a little while.

I really like the superhero theme :). I hope thet the GBL expands even more in the next few years. The GBL has brought me a lot of happy times when things sucked.:D
