Who are you all most excited to see return to GBL play this 2009 season?
Players, teams, etc....

I think the 2009 season has a lot of potential for players to sign with an organization.

I'm looking forward to the team O.C. puts together as well.

Here are some of the things I'm excited for

-Another Canadian team added
-2 more former AAA markets on board (now 4 in total)
-10 team circuit with more private owners
-strong ownership finally stepping up in Edmonton

And mostly I'm excited to have some sunny weather, a cold big rock beer and a spicy spolombo sausage down at foothills.

I'm ready to see the rivalry between Yuma and Tucson develop. Happy to see the Victoria franchise. Wondering how the whole Tijuana thing is going to turn out, and if having the Potros in the league will bolster the Arizona/SoCal attendance.

I'm anxious to see...

...how my pitching student, Ryan Rose does with the Seals. He was one of the three first signees. He has been with me since he was a freshman in High School, one year removed from the University of La Verne.

I'm really interested to see how things unfold in the OC with Nevin at the helm. And, even more interested to see if he doesn't activate himself for a game or two...that would be fun!!!

And, lastly...I'm really interested to see how things develop in Long Beach with Garry Templeton taking over the reigns.

With all the new teams, talent, markets, and franchises...this should prove to be an incredible season in the GBL...

Granted, he's going to have to work his butt off to make it out of Spring Training first, but I have good first hand knowledge of his work ethic, cause I'm working him to the bone each week...haha!!!

Seconded.

Other than opening day, I'm mostly looking forward to the Potros making their one and only visit to Calgary from August 7th to 9th. Apparently, that'll also be the return of Darryl Brinkley.

Couldn't agree more. I for one will be giving Brinkley a standing O when he come up to bat for the first time(with my Spolumbos in one hand of course).

I'm excited to watch Marcus Nettles of the Edmonton Capitals again. For anyone who hasn't taken notice of him from last year, he has blazing speed.
Watching him run the bases for triples was as exciting as anything last season.

looking forward to the Armada's upcoming season. Ive been a season ticket holder since the first season and I personally think that this years team is shaping to be one of the best in Long Beach.

Will weird to see Templeton taking the reigns of the team but his knowledge for the game should diffidently help the boys of summer.

Who knows where Brinkley and the rest of the Potros will end up now? The Potros have been suspended due to H1N1, and the players are going into a dispersal draft. Sad news.

Yikes that is bad news - although the silver lining would be if Brinkley ends up back in Calgary!

The Vipers outfield is pretty full as it is. Miller, Okana, Lentini, Moro, Mermer... it'd certainly make competition fierce.

Brinkley ended up in Edmonton. It was interesting to watch him play against his old team mates during the exhibition game. Too bad we have to wait til mid July to watch them play again!

Can I ask how you heard about the exhibition game? Late last week I found out about it by chance in an article (in the Herald I think) and it was set to go Monday. I spent the weekend cursing the weather because it was so nice all weekend but snow was in the forecast for Monday so the game was likely going to be cancelled. Then I found out they were smarter than I thought and rescheduled to Sunday after all. I was very disappointed to miss it.

As far as I know the game wasn't advertised anywhere - how many people were there?

I found out about the game through someone who works there. I think it was more of a game to work out the team and the new staff, work out the kinks so to speak. There were probably about 60 people there. There was also supposed to be a game in Edmonton on Tues (I think) but it was cancelled due to the snow. Looking forward to tomorrows game - it should be a good one. Calgary has got a lot of really good talent this year, not that they havent had in the past!

....See you at the game tomorrow. It's Lima time, and I've seen him give up plenty of long balls when he was pitching for my home town Tigers. Hopefully he'll give up a few more against the snakes.

Gotta love Calgary weather! It was COLD last night but I could not believe the number of fans that stayed despite that. Wondering if this might be the year things turn around in Viperville! Hears hoping.

Yep it was freeezing in the stands, it was funny hearing the hawkers yelling "ice cold beer!" which didn't sound at all appealing (I still drank them of course...). I can't wait for the Sunday matinee where hopefully I won't be able to see my breath.

What a good game though, some of the best pitching I've seen in the GBL. Jose Lima still has good stuff, and to pitch a complete game in the season opener is a feat. Not sure I like those nets on top of the wall though - whats the point? It caused confusion on Castro's homer, then Miller's sailed over the netting anyway!

A couple other random points:

-Who is doing the announcing this year? The guy from the past 3 seasons had much more personality.

-I assume they will have more A/V eventually? There were no sound bites or anything last night.

-No Big Rock beer!! What a shame! Kokanee and Bud just aren't the same...

-I was sitting above the Long Beach dugout and from up close Lima looks like he's about 60 years old!

From what I heard, Labatts was offering to do more to promote the Vipers than was Big Rock. We were told that Labatts has also ponied up something like 10 grand in give-aways for the upcoming season.

It's a shame Big Rock didn't step up to the plate and match the offer - since they have better tasting beer.

It was nice to have a local beer as sponsor but if Labatts is willing to offer more in sponsorship then that would be the better choice.
People were always complaining about there only being Big Rock beer! LoL
It was a good game last night, the nets were up there last year too and as far as I can remember (and my memory isnt always that good) there hasnt been any confusion regarding homeruns til last night. Hopefully that will only be a one time thing. BTW the nets are there to protect people who might be in the athletic park next to the stadium and/or the parking lot to the south. People who might be in the Vipers parking or smoking area will just have to really pay attention LoL

As for the AV, from what I understood they were having some issues with cameras, etc and it is a whole new team so we may have to cut them some slack for a couple of games. Not sure who the announcer is but I thought he sounded more into the game then Kramer ever did but that just might be me.

I never saw Lima up close so I will just have to take your word for it, maybe make more of an effort to see him tonight. LoL

I was out of town for pretty well the entire second half last year so maybe they went up then. Early on in 2008 (May/June) I don't remember seeing them.

the Long Beach Bats last night were alive but we couldn't cross home plate. Was really nice to see that Lima did well and if he didn't have the 2 mistakes (home runs) we would probably still be playing

they played an awesome game tonight! I must say that the Armada players seem like a class act. Lima made more then a few young people smile today, was great to see an opposing team friendly with the fans. It was cold again tonight but those California boys seem to weather it (no pun intended) really well. Lets see what tomorrow brings!

Hey hey hey, the good guys lost! LoL
I am hoping for an equally excellent game again tonight and to be honest when both teams are playing like that I dont really care who wins. Well, I kinda hope it is the Vipers but you get my meaning.
Your team really are good guys, you dont always hear about the opposing team making time for fans - very classy (especially in our lovely cold weather). I didnt get everyones names but Jose Lima and Sean Buller were but 2 of the crowd. We had a good chat about heckling, height and handing out bats! LoL

yes our boys are class acts. I have been a season ticket holder for 5 years, was the mascot for 3 years and even ran the booster club for a year. The whole team even the front office are very classy. Hope you can make it down here to one of our games
