Yeah, the whole idea seems a little goofy in my opinion. Then again, who asked me, right? In any case, for the sake of indoor football, I hope that this doesn't happen. Stuff like this doesn't really help in maintaining the integrity of the indoor game, or what's left of it anyway.
Remember what a joke it was in the indoor football community a few years back when Carolyn Shiver tried to do the same thing?

Trust me, if the league doesn't want it to happen, it won't happen. This info was based on a press release coming out of Rochester. This didn't come from the league. From the people I've spoken to in the league, this venue hasn't been sanctioned. The press release, best I can tell, was based on an idea that was being tossed around because Rochester's venue doesn't have any suitable dates available for potential playoff games.

I agree with Phydeaux72 on this one.
Maybe an exhibition game could be played out-doors, for publicity, kind of like the NHL.
No way a play-off game should be played out-doors.

i think its a great idea
it seems to be working for NHL its about bringing the sport to more fans
whats wrong with that
this sport needs more exposure and this might be a way in
has nothing to do with integrity of the league its about getting the sport to more fans

I wouldn't call it ripping, just stating his opinion.
We shouldn't be RIPPING anyone, especially if you're connected in a professional way to the subject at hand.
Basically I agree with you about airing dirty laundry in public, It shouldn't be done. But I don't feel this is dirty laundry. It's concerning an event that could affect the publics perspective on the sport itself, not just this league.
He gave his opinion, I don't think calling the idea "Goofy" can be classified as attacking anyone or even being unprofessional.
You can debate whether it would have a positive or negative affect, some will say it's ludicrous to even contemplate an outdoor game while others may think it's a good gimmick to get the publics attention. As for me, I'm not a proponent of the "any PR is good PR" theory.
I don't think I would enjoy it as much outside and further away for the action.
Plus the Home crowd advantage would be lost as the crowd would look so much smaller in a larger outdoor venue as the noise was lost in the clouds.
The season hasn't even started yet, so worrying about playoffs dates should have their energy pointed towards seeking an indoor venue or juggling dates with the current venue first.
I'm not sure the McCarthy's would appreciate you inferring that he's their Daddy - haha - poor comparrison;)

True, they also still play in a dome sized for a regulation sized field.
Would this be the same, will the venue fit the field so the game doesn't feel like it's lost in the distance? You shouldn't need binoculars to watch an "Indoor" game.

Did anyone see the NHL outdoor game at Wrigley this year??? Great game, but I am guessing that those sitting in the outfield never saw the puck once all game...even with binos.
Not sure where they are planning to play this one, but I think the best venues would be small college football or soccer stadiums - put the field right in a corner so at least two sets of bleachers can see. Forget about trying to sell out the whole venue (not gonna happen anyway).

I'm a big hockey fan but only watched bits and pieces of it, I wasn't impressed and thought it was just a gimmick and would have been much better inside. Yes, they filled the stadium but like you say they didn't really see a hockey game, just a blur of people skaking through the snow storm - lol

i dont think its about the size of the venue but more about the atmosphere that was created durring the game the one i went to in buffalo was like no other you could feel the energy around you and people were going crazy im sure people will be able to see everything in a football game!!!!!!!!!

I agree. The best crowds Ive been a part of were in Muskegon and Marion. Small venues and crowds that loved to hate the Slaughter.
The NHL has 'pond hockey' as it's tradition. What tradition doe the IFL have?

True, but it's a lot harder to pump the atmosphere in a venue too large for the crowd in attendance. Plus it's always tougher to create an atmospere outdoors than indoors.

The Raiders are not concerned with a game that is ,,a lifetime away, even if we make the playoffs with home field. Whatever benezio says we will do;period. Are focus is completely on the first opponent; the Sioux Falls Storm. Now that will be a fun matchup. Probably one of the most intriguing, if not they most intriging game played by the Raiders since our inception. They are the classiest and best run organization in indoor football today. We are focused on that first game only right now.

If you have 2 parties, with the same number of people and the same amount noise, one is held inside a medium sized arena and the other in a parking lot, which will seem louder and more raucous?
The inside one.
It's easier to build and contain an atmosphere in an enclosed enviroment, as long as the venue size fits the party. Sound systems have more punch inside.
100 people inside of a domed NFL stadium would be no different than the parking lot scenario.

I know it's hard to believe, but an NBA team, and yes even an NHL team can draw a larger crowd than an Indoor Football team.
AND1 plays outside all the time, but the venue is small and overpacked to the hilt keeping much of the noise confined. Plus most of the people in the crowd are accustomed to playing and hanging out at the street court confined with a chain link fence. And those games are much more exciting than an NBA game. Will the Indoor game played outdoors be more exciting than an NFL or NCAA game?
The true football fans will show up no matter where you play the game, but the casual fans won't be as excited or come just to be part of an unusual event the way the NHL and NBA fans did.
Then again, give away 10,000 free tickets and you just might have a decent enough crowd to fill a small outdoor High School stadium. ;)

I hear ya, I've seen tons of free tickets never used.
It pis...... umm, upsets the season ticket holders when heavily discounted and free tickets appear. I've know some to not renew their season tickets and go after those instead.
Then I've seen the scalpers selling tickets around the arena that were from the free batch allocated to specific groups. Overall it didn't really affect the attendance.
The Tampa Bay Storm of the AFL consistantly had free tickets given away, and yes many times there were 10,000 plus given away for a single day. The story goes that the team wasn't giving them away, the arena was.
Since the arena got all parking, concessions and a percentage of merchandise sold they wanted the masses inside the building at all costs. Now the people that own the arena are also part owners of the team.

No, I believe Bob said they averaged about 1,600 paid fans a game. So the 500 was a far dropoff. Perhaps Rochester has tired of their antics.
Of course, now that they're playing such natural rivals as Sioux Falls, I'm sure things will pick up.

They also slam their fans and do nothing when their arena oversteps its bounds and throws a couple out, too. I'd be surprised if they were in the top two-thirds of attendance in the UIF this year.

We came into this league to play the best team in indoor football. The Sioux falls Storm is a benchmark for all to go after. You call ,in sarcasm, this a natural rival. Its a rivalry for anyone that wants to be considered the best. They are bringing back their entire team ,and then some. There are no excuses on either side. You want a prediction? Here it is:
With Mark Blackburn coming back and the rumor that other Storm defenders of years past (especially Shannon Poppinga), I don't think a team with no UIF experience has a shot of winning that game the first view. Sioux Falls is the best team in the sport's history, and though the CIFL has rules designed to help defenses, Rochester has seen nothing like that defense.
Unlike CIFL teams with decent defenses, Sioux Falls also has an offense. Terrance Bryant has all kinds of weapons to go to downfield, and they will have a field day with a defense not used to the rules being played in the UIF. Combining that with Sioux Falls having played a game and Rochester not, I don't see this as a good introduction to the UIF for Rochester. The Raiders are a top-10 team in the sport for sure, but I don't feel they'll show it here. I follow the camp that the AFL players aren't so much better than indoor ballers that it creates an automatic "oh, we're this great now." The 2007 Raiders were a team and they played like one, came together, and shut Port Huron down (even if the Pirates were in extenuating circumstances, Rochester had a gameplan that did shut down their offense and probably would have regardless). I don't think 2009's group of old Raiders and mercenaries has that same camaraderie...something Sioux Falls has.
Think about this - guys like Mo Jackson have been with the Raiders now three years. If Poppinga comes back, this would be his ninth season with the Storm. Experience means a whole lot, and for the first time since that '07 season, the Raiders aren't the team with it.
Storm 51, Raiders 30.

Seeming how Sioux Falls will have a game in hand and Rochester not, it would very likely not be a fluke if the Raiders win this game. The only fluky way would be if the Storm didn't pay players and they didn't practice, but they're not Saginaw or Maryland.
The winner of this game is probably the favorite in the UIF this year, unless Sioux Falls is coming off a loss to Bloomington to start things off.

That's no lie b-man. Bloomington is putting togther quite an experienced indoor club. Might make the boring drive down there worthwhile just to take a peek. Although I do wonder if Warrick is a no-show yet?
Too bad you guys aren't going to tangle during the regular season. So much for playing the best. Swashbucklers are gone and after that SF game the challenges are pretty slim.
As for excuses on Mar 19? Shoot, you've go them ready made. Mar 19 is a Thursday and I can picture exactly what the excuse(s) will be, "Oh most of our Storm players had to work Thursday and Friday, so we just sent 10 of our backups out there." "Besides a bunch of us were still sore from playing the Saturday night b4 and needed more than five days rest, so our best are sitting out this game against a former CIFL team (yuk) and we'll suit them up for our home opener against a real Omaha team on Mar 29." "But we could sure use the money Bob gave us so we went in there with a weak roster on purpose." "Bob said he wasn't going to give his guys the week off, but when we arrived Thursday afternoon we saw the entire Raider team at poolside in the hotel sipping on pina colades." etc, etc.

Back on the original subject of this thread (just because it took that long for me to be able to reply) - I think the idea of the ouotdoor game is lame. Yes, the NHL did it, and it has worked. But that is an established league, with a long history and established fan base. Not a fledgling league in a struggling sport trying to set itself apart from other leagues. If I want to see indoor football played with plywood walls or played outside, I'd go to one of those games. As a fan, if my team was planning to play a game outside, I'd be PISSED.
