HOGS OFFENSE STALLS IN IOWA
02/07/2009 2:23 PM
Des Moines, Iowa- For the second straight night the Rockford IceHogs suffered a 4-1 loss. On Saturday it was at the hands of the Iowa Chops at the Wells Fargo Arena.
The loss drops Rockford to 4-2-0-0 on the team’s season-long seven-game road swing which will conclude on Wednesday in Peoria.
Rockford and Iowa went scoreless in the opening period on Saturday night with just 12 combined shots. Rockford managed just five shots in on David LeNeveu while Iowa chipped seven in on Corey Crawford.
For the sixth consecutive road game the IceHogs tallied the first goal. While short handed, Tim Hambly hit Petri Kontiola with a long pass and the IceHogs center blasted his 11th goal of the season past LeNeveu at 4:14.
But liked they’ve done in each of the past two visits to Iowa, Rockford gave up the big period. Just after his penalty expired, Adrian Veideman hopped out of the box and picked up a Troy Bodie pass and beat Crawford at 12:23 to tie the game at 1-1.
Then the IceHogs penalty kill coughed up two more goals. The first came when Brian Salcido’s point blast bounced off the back half wall and off of an Petteri Wirtanen's skate and in at 14:19 for his eighth goal of the season.
Salcido would strike again, this time on a five-on-three advantage at 19:54 of the middle frame. The Iowa d-man blasted his seventh goal of the season past Crawford off of a set up from Matt Beleskey putting the Chops on top 3-1.
LeNevue and the Chops would deny a third period comeback for Rockford as the only goal in the final frame was potted by Wirtanen into an empty Rockford goal at 19:06.
The IceHogs finished the night 0-7 on the power play while Iowa went 2-5. Crawford was handed the loss after making 24 saves while LeNeveu got the win with 22 saves on 23 Rockford shots.

CHOPS WINNING STREAK HIT THREE WITH 4-1 WIN OVER 'HOGS
02/07/2009 2:57 PM
What started as a rather slow game for the Chops turned into a heated battle for the puck between the Rockford IceHogs and the Chops on Saturday night in front of 4,473 fans at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Trailing early, the Chops came back with four straight goals to defeat the 'Hogs 4-1 and draw within a point of 2nd place in the West Division.
The first period showed the Chops and IceHogs scoreless, with 7 and 5 shots, respectively. Neither Chops goalie David Leneveu nor IceHogs goalie Corey Crawford were tested, as both team's defense played a huge role in keeping the puck out of their own zone. The second period, however, was a different story. Both teams came out ready to notch the first goal of the game. Rockford was first to answer, when Petri Kontiola got the puck past Leneveu, with help from Tim Hambly. The Chops weren't discouraged, though. After Rockford scored, the Chops fired up, especially Adrian Veideman. Veideman was just exiting the penalty box as he got a pass from Ajay Baines. Veideman took the puck into the offensive zone and beat a diving Corey Crawford to get the first Chops goal of the game. The Chops weren't done. Penalty troubles for the IceHogs mounted, and the Chops' powerplay unit was more than happyto take advantage of their situation. Jack Skille was called to the penalty box at 14:03 for roughing, but it only took the Chops :16 seconds to take him out, after Petteri Wirtanen beat Crawford for the go-ahead goal. The Chops powerplay answered again with 5.8 seconds left in the period, with Brian Salcido's goal to round out the 2nd.
The third period was a back-and-forth effort between both teams, and both goalies were up to the task, with Iowa tallying 11 shots on goal to Rockford's six. The Chops took three penalties in the period, the last penalty dealt to the Chops for too many men on the ice. Leneveu kept the puck out of the net during each penalty kill, and managed to keep the IceHogs scoreless the entire period. The Chops got an empty-net goal from Petteri Wirtanen, his 2nd of the game. The Chops won 4-1, and look to continue their 2-0 home streak against the Rochester Americans on Tuesday.

CHOPS DOMINATE ICEHOGS AGAIN

February 8, 2009
Iowa Chops forward Petteri Wirtanen saw the light, but didn't know who caused it to flash.
Turned out to be him.
"I was just trying to see where (the puck) is," said Wirtanen, whose good positioning allowed him to score the winning goal in Iowa's 4-1 triumph Saturday over Rockford. "The ref showed it was in. That's all right. We'll take it."
The Chops took out the IceHogs for the fourth time in the past five meetings to pull within one point of them - and second place - in the AHL West Division standings.

"Those standings are right here in the room, so everybody's aware," said Chops goaltender David LeNeveu, who stopped 22 of 23 shots. "At the same time, it's just another game. We've got to approach every game the same way."
An announced crowd of 4,473 at Wells Fargo Arena saw Iowa (25-18-5) successfully kill all seven of the power plays for Rockford (27-21-0-4), while going 2-for-6 itself with a man advantage.
"(Saturday) was probably our most complete game in a while," LeNeveu said. "It's tough with all the guys coming in and out of the lineup. We've had guys playing well who deserved call-ups and we've had injuries and other guys have stepped in. We're jelling nicely now. "
Rockford took a 1-0 lead on Petri Kontiola's short-handed goal 4:14 into the second period, but Iowa responded with three straight scores, including Wirtanen's inadvertent redirect of a shot by Brian Salcido that put his team up 2-1.
"I didn't feel anything there, but their guys were saying I kicked it," said Wirtanen, who has four of his nine goals in the past three games. "It may have gone in off my skate, but I definitely didn't kick it."
Adrian Veideman scored the Chops' first goal and Salcido added the third as both defensemen joined Wirtanen with two-point nights.
Iowa won its third straight game, matching its second-longest string of success this season.
Chops notes
GIVING GOALIE: Iowa netminder David LeNeveu notched his third straight win - and added to his donation total. LeNeveu pledged to give a dollar to Blank Children's Hospital for every save this season, and his 22 saves Saturday pushed his to-date contribution sum to $651.
SHOT-BLOCKERS: Iowa allowed zero shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the third period Saturday after doing the same for the first 15 minutes of the third in Friday's win.
