NIEMI, BLACKWATER LEAD ICEHOGS PAST MOOSE
01/29/2009
Rookie winger tallies first AHL goal and a shootout tally
Winnipeg, Man.-With injuries hampering the Rockford IceHogs in the month of January, the Rockford IceHogs have had to rely on players on ECHL recall and loan. On Thursday the IceHogs received a goal and a shootout marker from newcomer Judd Blackwater, loaned to Rockford earlier in the day from the Stockton Thunder (ECHL), to top the Manitoba Moose 2-1 in the shootout at the MTS Centre.
Blackwater put Rockford on top with a power-play goal in the opening frame. In his first career AHL game, Blackwater picked up a Petri Kontiola pass and slid his first career AHL goal past Curtis Sanford at 13:36. Niklas Hjalmarsson also helped on the goal.
Manitoba got the goal back in the second period just a second after a power play expired. Winger Raymond Sawada swatted in a loose puck past Niemi in traffic for his fourth goal of the season at 3:03. The goal was marked by Jason Krog and Maxim Fortunas.
The goaltenders did the rest from there as Niemi ended a personal five-game road losing streak making 24 saves. Sanford was equally as solid, turning away 27 Rockford shots in his third start with the Moose.
In the shootout Manitoba tallied goals in the first two rounds from Michael Grabner and Krog, but Niemi was able to deny the final three Moose attempts. Rockford received shootout goals from Tim Brent, Blackwater and Mike Radja to grab the extra point.
The road win was Rockford’s seventh of the season and comes at the beginning of the IceHogs season long seven-game road swing.

MANITOBA SNAPS SIX GAME WINNING STREAK ON THURSDAY NIGHT
MOOSE DROP 2-1 SHOOTOUT DECISION TO ICEHOGS
By Christina Caligiuri
01/29/2009
Back-and-fourth play, nine penalties and stellar goaltending summarized the second game between the Manitoba Moose and Rockford IceHogs on Thursday night at the MTS Centre. After 60 minutes of regulation time, the teams were forced into overtime and then a shootout to decide the game winner, and the visiting IceHogs defeated the Moose 2-1 for the first time this season in front of 6535 spectators.
First Period -
At 2:54 Adam Pineault took the games first penalty when he was called out for hooking, but the Moose were unable to beat goaltender Antti Niemi and were shutout on their first man-advantage.
Rockford benefited from their first powerplay at 12:30 when Alexandre Bolduc was penalized for slashing. A minute into the man-advantage, Judd Blackwater took Curtis Sanford by surprise and snuck the puck between his left pad and left goal post to put Rockford up by one.
On the heels of the first goal, Bolduc soon added a hooking penalty to his resume, putting the IceHogs on their second powerplay. Manitoba’s penalty killers cleared the puck on three occasions to kill off the five-on-four without too much added pressure on Sanford.
Second Period -
Early in the second, centre man Jake Dowell took a tripping penalty and put the Moose back on the powerplay. Although the home team was leading in shots 12-10 they couldn’t translate their shot lead into a goal lead and play resumed to five-on-five.
With a scramble in front of the visiting net the puck laid loose right in Niemi’s crease. With help from Jason Krog and Maxime Fortunus, Raymond Sawada netted his fourth of the season to knot the game at one.
Third Period -
At 8:41 into the third period, Andrew Archer’s hooking penalty put the Moose on their fifth powerplay of the contest, but like the first four the Moose failed to capitalize with the extra attacker.
Guillaume Desbien’s holding sentence put the Moose back on the penalty kill in the dying minutes of the final frame. Strong defense along with an offensive surge by Alexandre Bolduc and Jason Jaffray ensured the IceHogs wouldn’t claim the lead in the short two-minutes.
With both club’s failing to score in the final minutes, the Moose and IceHogs headed into overtime to decide the game winner.
Overtime -
Five minutes of extra time was too short for either side to break the tie, so the teams entered a shootout.

ICEHOGS EARN SHOOTOUT VICTORY OVER MOOSE
RRSTAR.COM STAFF REPORTS
Jan 30, 2009
WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Goalie Antti Niemi stopped the final three Manitoba shots and helped the Rockford IceHogs run off with a 2-1 shootout victory Thursday.
Newcomer Judd Blackwater, loaned to Rockford earlier in the day from the Stockton Thunder (ECHL), scored on a power play in the first period and then again in the shootout to lead the way for the IceHogs. Niemi ended a personal-high five-game road losing streak with 24 saves.
Manitoba got the goal back in the second period just a second after a power play expired. But Tim Brent and Mike Radja also scored in the shootout and Rockford put three into the net while Manitoba got only two of five past Niemi.
Petri Kontiola and Niklas Hjalmarsson earned assists on the first-period goal.
