OK everyone, time to sing the song that The Sweeper introduced back in '07 when the failed Hawaii Hurricanes were introduced:
http://www.oursportscentral.com/boards/showpost.php?p=50313&postcount=18
All together now!
"Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale
A tale of the ABA
That started from this mid-west town
But will never have their day
The CEO was an insane man
The head ref was one too
Sixty teams started that that year
At the end, there was only two
The season started getting rough
More than half the teams were tossed
If not for the balls of the spineless crew
The season wouldn’t have been lost
The season wouldn’t have been lost
The league ran aground on the shore of this deserted Hawaiian isle
With Joe Newman, and Connie too
Tom Chichester, and Brad Hester
No movie star, you know the rest
Put here by 'Joe Newman’s Guile'!"
-------------
Exit music
"So this is the tale of the ABA
They’re here for a short, short time
They’ll have to make the best of things
Joe will be serving time
Joe Newman and Tommy C
Will do their very worst
To make the teams uncomfortable
This league is very cursed
No cash, no coach, no place to play
Not a single fan around
Like the league office asks
'Can’t you get it off the ground?'
So join us here next year, my friend
You’re sure to get a smile
From that aging CEO
Known as 'Newman’s Guile'!"

So is Joe Newman going to honor those season ticket holders who were swindled out of $25,000 per season tickets by the Hawaii Hurricanes?
And is this the same travel deal that allowed the Alaska Dream to complete their season without a hitch?
I got a feeling that the "travel deal" was produced by Thor Heyerdahl 60 years ago, and Joe Newman just glommed onto the idea.

But hey, if you've got to replace the Georgia Gwizzlies with the Honolulu Pegasuses... I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

New ABA travel deal announced
Joe Newman, ABA CEO, today announced a new travel deal for ABA teams that will significantly lower teams travel cost. “We have signed a deal with the Jettison Scrap & Salvage Company to provide air travel for ABA teams via the company’s aircraft named Vulture. This is the biggest travel package we have ever announced and my good friend Harry Broderick has assured me that Vulture is ready to go and will take ABA teams to their destination at a fraction of the cost of regular air travel. We will have a link on our website that will take you directly to the Jettison website where you can book your trip and save money.”
Broderick had no comment, but did provide a company logo.

Will teams have to swim to their games?

I'm sure Jettison will provide the "luxury view accomodations," including the bungee cords to strap the players to the top of the aircraft. I'm not sure if they'll provide face guards in case of birds or other FOD possibilities.

Absurd............................................ ....
This is simply absurd. Does Joe think Hawaiians are all a bunch of morons? They'll see through this charade. The $25 000 dollar season tickets and the U or Hawaii player who couldn't afford to fly home are two of the only stories that made a real newspaper a couple of years ago.
This is absurd.
If Steve McGarret was still running Hawaii 5-0 they'd probably do an 3-part episode on this absolutely ridiculous business.

What is the difference between this release:
http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3770168
and this one, announcing the same group, location, and promise of travel solutions, released two months ago:
http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3739683
Which we already discussed here - with a walk down memory lane:
http://www4.oursportscentral.com/boards/showthread.php?t=12905
Both previous teams were well accepted, our mainland teams loved going there, but transportation was a problem. We finally have it worked out - and we are thrilled to be back there.
Actually there were three teams, Joe:
Mega Force
Hurricanes
and Pacific Rim Rockers - who took over for the Hurricanes after Joe threw out the owner who was doing bad things with people's credit cards...
Anyway, these teams were SO well accepted that they played a grand total of TWO home games on the islands.
And I'd love to se Joe put his cards on the table. He claims - as he has for every franchise announced in Hawaii and Alaska - that transportation has been worked out. So, Joe - what is the arrangement? Which airline have you and the Hawaii franchise SIGNED A DEAL WITH to provide flights to and from the mainland? How much will it cost in this SIGNED AGREEMENT?
See, Joe, I know you have a difficult time juggling the outlandish with the preposterous in your daily league activities, but if you are going to tell potential customers - who have been burned by your league three times - that you have 'worked out' the biggest hurdle for the newest attempt at a team, you have an obligation to tell them what it is, and not wait until the team fails yet again to blame the team for not having a deal in place (see Dream, Alaska).
YOU said it is worked out.
YOU announced all is great.
YOU tell them what the deal is.
And if you DON'T have a signed deal in place, then you just lied to a potential ABA market.
Again.
And you call us shameful...

I don't have a photo, but the mode of transportation is shown in the opening credits of Hawaii 50 (the outriggers).

Another lamentable bit of news this week is what looks like the imminent collapse of yet another attempt to bring professional basketball to Hawaii. Former University of Hawaii football star Darrick Branch and his partners in the sports marketing firm Aloha Soul Group issued a statement this week announcing their departure from the Honolulu Pegasus operation, complete with a disheartening list of allegations against team coach and owner LaShun McDaniel. We haven’t heard any final word on the Pegasus’ season, but Branch’s account–which describes virtually non-existent finances, a string of unmet commitments to players and staff and a series of cancelled games–appears to constitute last rites. For what it’s worth, Branch and his partners are asking the American Basketball Association to transfer ownership of the team to Aloha Soul Group. In any case, we’re glad we didn’t run our story on how this time was going to be different, and disappointed to see it go this way again.

"We are taking the correct steps in becoming one of the elite teams in the ABA and a trendsetter for professional basketball for the 21st century," added McDaniel. "We are in the process of making several major announcements for our organization and our website will be up shortly. We just want to make our fans, supporters, and the city of Honolulu proud of how we are conducting ourselves and the professionalism we will display in the city, the county and the state of Hawaii."
So, Joe - about that "great ownership group" you bragged about...
