The Kentucky Bisons Extend Winning Streak to Five
January 26, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA) Kentucky Bisons
The Bisons "rocked" the 5th ranked Cleveland Rockers this past Sunday 137-112. The Tri-state's minor league pro team continues to add numbers to the win column in their inaugural season. Kentucky has won five out their last six and have a record of 10-2 against some of the ABA's (American Basketball Association) top ranked teams. This win extends the Bison's winning streak to five respectively (respectively what?). The five game run includes an over-time victory against the Chicago Steam on the road, and a big win over the 2nd ranked Nashville Broncs.
Kentucky dominated Cleveland 137-112 on Sunday at the SportsCenter. The Bison hit 53 of 92 shots from the field for an astounding 58 percent overall. Local talent Lamar Owen, a former Owensboro High School celebrity (not a student, but a celebrity?), led the team in the opening period putting up nine points. But Kentucky's talent runs deep, Aubrey White and Mike Wells each scored seven points in the first twelve minutes giving Kentucky a strong start. The Bisons had a total of seven players score points in the first quarter alone.
"We've got a team that wants to get out and run," said Michael James, a former Apollo High School star and point guard for the Bisons. "It's already a fast-paced game with the shot clock, but we want to try and score in 10 or 12 seconds." James said, "White, Owen, they can get out on the floor and fill up the lanes, it makes the game easy for me. I just try to get them the ball where they can make the best play possible." The Bison's point guards Mike James and Brandon Stockton had 7 assists each, 18 points went to forward Aubrey White ("went to" - how? FedEx, A winning bet? Did he have the winning raffle ticket?) , and LaMar Owen had 13 points and 11 rebounds posting the teams only double-double. "At the beginning we came out really aggressive, then we slowed down and didn't play defense as well as we could," Owen said. "Defense is our main thing. We want to try and stop a team from getting more than 70 points."
But, the big men down low for the Bisons, Boris Siakam and Kenny Jones "reeked havoc" ("reeked" = very bad smell; I believe you mean "wreaked" - don't quote it if you aren't going to use it properly) in the paint for the Cleveland team (not "for" the Cleveland team - BTW, just say Cleveland or Rockers - it's "on" them) . Kenny Jones, with his aggressive and physical (same thing, no?) style of play, battled his way to putting up 23 points, and 7 rebounds leaving the Rockers with no answer down low. Add Boris Siakam, a stylish 6-foot-8 forward who ripped and slashed through the lane time and again, and who also claimed the game high 26 points (how did he claim them? did he plant a flag?) , simply meant a victory for the Bisons (grammar alert - what does this sentence mean?) .
For Cleveland, who is ranked No.4 in the ABA this loss was only the second of the season and they leave Kentucky with a record of 10-2. They did out-rebound the Bisons 37-28, and held a 15-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
Cleveland made 38-of-80 shots from the floor for 48 percent and hit 10-of-25 attempts from 3-point range for 40 percent. The Bisons passed for 26 assists and forced Cleveland into 25 turnovers. Struggling from behind the arc Kentucky hit 7-of- 25 3-pointers for 28 percent.
The next game at home for the Bisons is on January 31st at 7:00 PM at the SportsCenter in Owensboro, Ky. This is the first of a double header against the Atlanta Vision, the second will be played February 1st 12:00 PM. For more information about the Bisons please visit www.KentuckyBisons.com or call 270-782-7556.
It is certainly not the Gwizz - but I would suggest not downing Red Bulls when writing these things...
