ROCKFORD FALLS 4-2 GOING INTO ALL-STAR BREAK

01/24/2009

The Hogs finish 2-2-0-0 in final week of first half

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs couldn't grab two points going into the All-Star Break from the first-place Milwaukee Admirals at the Rockford MetroCentre. The Hogs fell 4-2 after coming back twice to tie the game in front of a sold out MetroCentre of 5,817.

Rockford found itself down early thanks to a Mike Santorelli goal just 12 seconds into the game, marking the fastest goal allowed to start a game for the IceHogs in club history. The previous record was set on March 24, 2004 by Quad City. Mallards center Jeff Williams 14 seconds into the game.

Rob Klinkhammer found the back of the net off of a Tim Hambly pass at 15:59 to even the score. Niklas Hjalmarsson also assisted on the goal.

"I thought we responded pretty well," said Rockford defenseman Jimmy Sharrow. "I thought we got down a little bit, the shoulder dropped a bit, but we bounced back once we got that one and picked it up."

But then Kelsey Wilson put the Ads back up again at 19:20 when he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone as his penalty expired and finished a break away past Corey Crawford. Nick Spaling was credited with an assist.

In the second period, Dan Bertram scored his third goal of the season and third in as many games off of helpers from Hjalmarsson and Adam Berti to tie the game at 2-2.

Then Ryan Jones put the Ads up again with a wrap-around goal at 3:49 in the third. Mike Santorelli was credited with an assist.

"They're a speedy team and a good hockey team and obviousy that's why they're first in the division," Sharrow said. "I thought we stayed with them tonight then we gave up that one right in the start of the first period and that's not something you don't want to do."

And Cal O'Reilly added a little padding at 13:13, taking a dish on the breakaway from Patric Hornqvist.

The Admirals were 0-for-2 on the power play, pushing Rockford's improving penalty kill to 28th place in the league. The IceHogs were 0-for-4 on the power play.

Crawford and Drew MacIntyre both finished with 31 saves.

ADMIRALS REBOUND IN ROCKFORD

Milwaukee Enters Break With 12 Point Lead After Win

1/24/2009

Ryan Jones and Mike Santorelli both recorded a goal and an assist as the Milwaukee Admirals beat the Rockford IceHogs Saturday in Rockford, 4-2.

The win gives Milwaukee 62 points, 12 more than second-place Rockford and Houston, heading into the All-Star Break.

Jones scored the game-winner at 3:49 of the third period on a wraparound. Jones initial shot was stopped by Rockford goalie Corey Crawford, but he dragged the rebound around the net and was able to beat Crawford to the right goalpost for his 12th goal of the season. Mike Santorelli recorded the lone assist.

Milwaukee iced the game when Patric Hornqvist fed Cal O’Reilly for the team’s fourth goal with 6:47 left in the game. Hornqvist was chasing a loose puck and appeared to have a breakaway. However, he was tripped from behind. With a delayed penalty coming to Rockford, Hornqvist got up to his feet and passed to O’Reilly in the left circle. O’Reilly’s wristshot went into the net for his seventh goal of the season.

The Admirals got off to a great start when the opening faceoff was sent into the Icehogs zone by Nolan Yonkman. Jed Ortmeyer checked a Rockford defenseman to jar the puck free to Jones behind the net. Jones quickly dealt a pass to Mike Santorelli for a one-timer that beat Rockford goalie Corey Crawford just 12 seconds into the game. Santorelli’s goal was his 14th of the season and assists were credited to Jones and Ortmeyer.

The IceHogs tied the game at 15:59 of the first period when Rob Klinkhammer received a pass behind the Milwaukee defense and lifted a shot over goalie Drew MacIntyre’s right shoulder.

Milwaukee reclaimed the lead when Kelsey Wilson scored on a wristshot with just 40 seconds remaining in the first period. Wilson had just exited the penalty box when Nick Spaling blocked a pass off his knee to neutral ice. Wilson claimed possession of the puck near the Rockford blue line, then sped in to the left circle and beat Crawford for his ninth goal of the year. Spaling notched the lone helper.

The IceHogs tied the game at 12:55 of the second on a Dan Bertram wristshot.

MacIntyre finished with 31 saves in recording his AHL-leading 21st win.

ICEHOGS DISCOVER WHY MILWAUKEE SITS ATOP THE STANDINGS

By Reed Schreck-RRSTAR.COM

Jan 24, 2009

ROCKFORD — A sellout MetroCentre crowd of 5,817 witnessed history — the wrong kind — and got a lesson in current events as well Saturday night.

All in attendance saw how the Milwaukee Admirals are comfortably ahead of the rest of the West Division. Their 4-2 victory over the Rockford IceHogs was chock full of examples, some painful to watch.

Milwaukee (29-12-2-2, 62 points) has made a habit of winning close games (12-1-2-2 in one-goal outings), and Saturday’s was close as can be at 2-2 going to the third.

The Admirals then got a wrap-around goal by Ryan Jones at 3:49, and padded the lead on a score by Cal O’Reilly at 13:13 on a delayed penalty on Rockford (23-19-0-4, 50).

“It seems like those kind of chances you give up end up in the net,” said Rockford goalie Corey Crawford, who made 31 saves.

Milwaukee’s first two goals were just as confounding to Crawford. The first came on a blast by
Mike Santorelli 12 seconds in — that’s where history came in. It was the quickest goal ever allowed by Rockford to start a game by two seconds.

“We weren’t ready off the get-go,” Crawford said. “A quick pass, a one-timer in the slot — they came out flying.”

Rockford came out “sleeping in the beginning,” according to their lone all-star, Petri Kontiola.
“That’s a good team. You’ve got to be ready from beginning to end against them.”

Rob Klinkhammer tied the game 1-1 after taking a pinpoint outlet pass from Tim Hambly.
Klinkhammer then broke in and beat goalie Drew MacIntyre at 15:59.

But Milwaukee’s Kelsey Wilson jumped out of the penalty box and gave his team a 2-1 edge at 19:20.

“Unfortunately, we gave up one in 12 seconds and one in the last 40 (seconds). We’d like to take those back,” Rockford coach Bill Peters said.

“It was very disappointing to give up that goal early. It put us on our heels for about seven minutes.”

Dan Bertram evened it 2-2, firing the puck from the left circle through traffic for the only second period score.

Then came Milwaukee’s third-period clinic.

“Jones made a great play,” IceHogs center Nathan Davis said. “That was a huge momentum goal.”

LATE GOALS PAVE THE WAY

Jan. 24, 2009

Mike Santorelli scored 12 seconds into the game but Rockford retaliated to tie it on a goal by Rob Klinkhammer at 15:59.

Kelsey Wilson added a goal to give the Admirals the one-goal lead.

Dan Bertram scored at 12:55 of the second period, but Ryan Jones put the Admirals up by a goal at 3:49 of the third period. Cal O'Reilly scores the final goal at 13:13.
