ICEHOGS ROLL TO 6-2 WIN OVER IOWA AT HOME

01/23/2009

IceHogs avenge road loss in back end of home-and-home

Rockford, Ill.- A banged up Rockford IceHogs squad got some offense from a group of new names and a strong performance on the penalty kill to grab a 6-2 win over the Iowa Chops on Friday at the Rockford MetroCentre.

Dan Bertram, Adam Pineault, Adam Hobson and Jake Dowell all notched goals to push Rockford into second place in the West Division on Denis Savard Night.

"It's nice to see Pineault get his first goal with our team and Dowell got rewarded for working hard on the penalty kill," said assistant coach Ted Dent. "It's good to get some offense from those guys who normally don't provide it."

Bertram started the scoring as he picked up a feed from Dowell in front of the net and put it past David LeNeveu at 11:37 in the first period to give the IceHogs the advantage.

But Ryan Donally evened the score at 13:14 with assists from Charlie Kronschnabel and Logan Stephenson.

Then Pineault gave the Hogs the advantage again at 17:08 on a power play with assists from Danny Groulx and Petri Kontiola.

"We got some pucks to the net tonight that normally wouldn't go in," said Dent. "I think we generated some offense off of that and I think we worked really hard tonight to get those opportunities."

In his eighth game with the IceHogs in 2008-09, Hobson recorded his first goal to give Rockford a little bit of a cushion. Hobson picked up a loose puck in a scrum in front of the net at 7:28 in the second frame and put it past LeNeveu. Assists were credited to Tim Hambly and Nathan Davis.

Then Pascal Pelletier picked the corner of the net for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season at 17:34 in the second with helpers from Kontiola and Pineault.

T.J. Trevelyan sniped the corner of the goal on the other side of the ice at 18:57 in the middle frame to bring the Chops back within two. Assists came from Brennan Evans and Brendan Mikkelson.

In the third, Dowell pushed the score to 5-2 with a short-handed breakaway goal at 7:12 with a helper from Jimmy Sharrow. Both of Dowell's goals in 2008-09 have come on the penalty kill.

"(The penalty kill) has been strong the last three or four games," said Dent. "It goes in stretches where it's really good and then those where it's really bad. Hopefully we can turn the corner on this and build on tonight's game."

Pete MacArthur got in on the action at 10:26 with his sixth goal of the season with helpers from Evan Brophey and Rob Klinkhammer to push the score to 6-2.

Between their six goals, 14 skaters recorded points including multi-point games for Pineault, Kontiola and Dowell. Corey Crawford finished with 35 saves in net for the IceHogs, compared to 21 stops for LeNeveu.

The Hogs stopped all four of Iowa's power play, while notching a goal in four chances on the man advantage.

Chops fall in Rockford on Friday, 6-2

01/23/2009

Led by an efficient offense with two goals in each period, the Rockford IceHogs defeated the Iowa Chops in Rockford on Friday night, 6-2.

After both teams stalled on the power play to begin the game, the IceHogs got on the scoreboard first thanks to some effective forechecking that saw the puck squirt out front to a wide open Dan Bertram, who hammered a one-timer past David LeNeveu for a 1-0 lead.

The Chops would answer right back just a few minutes later as Ryan Donally took a bouncing puck across the blueline and fired shot low to the glove side past IceHogs goaltender Corey Crawford. Francis Wathier and Logan Stephenson assisted on the play for the Chops.

However, a late power play by the 'Hogs netted their second goal as a slapshot from the top of the left circle by Adam Pineault, squeezed between the legs of Chops goaltender David LeNeveu. The Iowa Chops outshot the IceHogs 14-9 in the opening period.

The 2nd period began with the IceHogs on the attack. After a David LeNeveu save, the Chops failed to control the bouncing rebound and Adam Hobson picked up the loose puck and lifted it over the group of players in front for a 3-1 Rockford lead. The IceHogs increased the lead to 4-1 as leading scorer Pascal Pelletier took a Chops turnover in their own zone at the blueline, streaked in from left side and slid the puck underneath LeNeveu for the three goal lead.

When all looked lost, the Chops rebounded to make it 4-2 with just more than a minute remaining as TJ Trevelyan took an open ice pass from Brennan Evans and raced in down the left wing, firing a slapshot over the glove of Corey Crawford to cut the lead to two goals at the end of two periods. Brendan Mikkelson, fresh off a return from the Anaheim Ducks also assisted on Trevelyan's goal.

The Chops got a power play in the 3rd period to try and climb back into the game, but a shorthanded goal by Jake Dowell, was stopped by LeNeveu on a breakaway, but banged home his own rebound gave the 'Hogs a 5-2 lead. One more goal by Pete MacArthur fresh off the bench made it 6-2 and any hopes of a comeback were squashed for the night as Rockford snapped a three-game losing streak against Iowa.

ICEHOGS KEEP NAILS INTACT, ROUT CHOPS

Reed Schreck-RRSTAR.COM

Jan 23, 2009

ROCKFORD — With Jack Skille out because of injury, Pascal Pelletier is the only Rockford IceHog with more than 10 goals. So, hey, he needs some help.

Raising their hands — and their games — were Dan Bertram, Adam Pineault, Adam Hobson and Jake Dowell.

The first three showed Pelletier how to put the puck past Iowa Chops goalie David LeNeveu on Friday. Then Pelletier followed their lead with a goal of his own, his team-best 22nd, as Rockford enjoyed a rare non-nailbiter and a 6-2 victory before a MetroCentre crowd of 3,107.
Rockford’s previous 11 games were one-goal affairs going to the closing moments.

Hopson produced his first score in his eighth game in the second period. Dowell (second goal, a highlight reel short-hander) and Pete MacArthur (sixth) concluded the scoring in the third period, which coach Bill Peters called his team’s best of the evening.

There was nothing to fault with the first or second, either.

Rockford (23-18-0-4, 50 points) led 2-1 after one and 4-2 after two.

“It shows how much as a team we played tonight,” said Pineault, contributing his first IceHogs goal in his seventh game. “It went throughout the lineup.”

Bertram was one of half a dozen IceHogs riding stationary bikes afterward in the locker room. He took advantage of his first start — as did his linemates. Adam Berti, Dowell and Bertram all had one goal on the season before combining for two Friday.

“You’ve got to like games like that where you get the win and can contribute,” Bertram said. “It was nice to start — it shows coach (Peters) is getting confidence in our play.”

Peters started Dowell’s line because of matchups.

“All our young guys — that either because of guys called up or injuries — have responded very well to their opportunities,” Peters said. “It’s what you preach as a coach. You don’t know when the opportunity is going to come, but you have to make sure you capitalize.”

The win gave Rockford a 4-3 lead in the season series, snapping a three-game skid against Iowa (22-17-2-3, 49). It also improved Rockford to 17-8-0-2 at home, where it remains tonight against West Division-leading Milwaukee.
