SHAKY SECOND PERIOD DOES ROCKFORD IN

01/20/2009 11:49 AM

Rockford drops a 4-3 road test in Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa.- The second period has not been kind to the Rockford IceHogs in 2008-09 and on Tuesday a lackluster second frame derailed the IceHogs 4-3 against the Iowa Chops at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Rockford tallied the only goal in the first period. Rookie winger Mike Radja followed his own rebound and cashed in on his ninth goal of the season past David LeNeveu at 12:11 of the opening frame. Fellow rookie Nathan Davis and Brennan Turner helped on the goal. The assist marked the first career AHL point for Turner.

The second period belonged to Iowa as they potted four goals past Antti Niemi. T.J. Trevelyan tied the game at 1-1 1:03 into the period with a power-play goal. Trevelyan slipped his 12th goal of the season under Niemi.

Trevelyan later came back with his second marker of the frame firing his 13th goal of the season over Niemi’s shoulder off of an IceHogs turnover at 8:27.

The IceHogs responded, however, when rookie winger Nathan Davis redirected a Danny Groulx slapshot past LeNeveu for his fifth goal of the season at 8:54, tying the score at 2-2. Adam Hobson also assisted on the goal.

Iowa reclaimed the lead, and added to it, late in the second frame. Ryan Dingle put the Chops back on top when he jammed a loose puck past Niemi at 18:00 of the period for his fifth goal of the campaign. Then just 55 seconds later Charlie Kronschnabel tallied his first career AHL goal to give Iowa a 4-2 lead after the second period.

Pascal Pelletier pulled Rockford back within one in the third period when he sniped his team-leading 21st goal of the season past LeNeveu set up by Groulx and Adam Pineault at 7:25.

Rockford controlled the third period from there but couldn’t solve LeNeveu the rest of the way including on a power play for the game’s final 1:43. The Chops puck stopper finished the game with 35 saves to earn the win.

Niemi was saddled with his fifth straight road loss after blocking 17 of 21 shots in two periods of work. Corey Crawford blocked all seven third period shots faced in relief.

Rockford finished the contest 0-6 on the power play while Iowa went 1-5.

CHOPS MOVE BACK INTO 2nd PLACE WITH THRILLING 4-3 WIN

01/20/2009

Led by 35 saves by David LeNeveu, two goals from TJ Trevelyan and Charlie Kronschnabel's first career AHL goal, the Iowa Chops finished out their six-game homestand in style with a thrilling 4-3 win over the Rockford IceHogs at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Chops dominated the start of Tuesday's game, but after outshooting the 'Hogs early 10-1, could not find the back of the net thanks to some good saves by IceHogs goaltender Antti Niemi. The IceHogs ramped up their offense after the early Chops flury which resulted in the game's first goal thanks to a second chance by Mike Radja, who followed up his own rebound after a save from Chops goaltender David LeNeveu and buried one past the glove for a 1-0 Rockford lead. Despite the early shot advantge in the period, the teams each managed 11 shots in the opening period.

The 2nd period was maybe the best offensive one for the Chops so far since the New Year. TJ Trevelyan tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal, as his shot from the top of the circle squeezed between the pads of Niemi and into the net with assists to Petteri Wirtanen and Brian Salcido. Trevelyan would add his second goal of the game midway through the period as he gave the Chops a 2-1 lead with a snipe over the blocker glove of Niemi. However, the IceHogs would answer right back seconds later as a shot from the point was redirected in by Nathan David to tie the game at 2-2. The Chops finished the 2nd period in style with two more late goals :55 seconds apart. First, Ryan Dingle collected a rebound down low to smash home the loose puck past Niemi with assists to Brennan Evans and Matt Caruana to give the Chops a 3-2 lead. Less than a minute later Charlie Kronschnabel got a pass from Ajay Baines and skated in the right wing, pulling the puck to his forehand and beating Niemi over the blocker for his first career Iowa Chops and AHL goal to put the Chops up 4-2 heading into the 3rd period.

The 3rd period was the David LeNeveu show, as the Chops goaltender made 13 saves, allowing only a Pascal Pelletier goal to make it 4-3. With less than two minutes in the game, the IceHogs had a 6 on 4 power play, but LeNeveu made several point-blank saves to preserve the 4-3 win for the Chops, moving them back into sole possession of 2nd place in the West Division.

CHOPS WIN AFTER FRANTIC LAST STAND

ROB GRAY • robgray@dmreg.com

January 21, 2009

Pulses pounded.

Shots came in bunches.

And late in Tuesday's wild game against Rockford, Iowa Chops defenseman Brennan Evans found himself playing without a stick.

"The first cross-check I threw in the last minute there, my stick breaks," said Evans, who helped the Chops withstand the IceHogs' 6-on-4 power play in the last 1:43 to preserve a 4-3 win before an announced crowd of 1,776 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Still, the Chops survived thanks in part to goaltender David LeNeveu, who stopped 13-of-14 shots in the final period as the Chops (22-16-2-3) vaulted to second place in the American Hockey League West Division.

T.J. Trevelyan scored Iowa's first two goals, Ryan Dingle squeezed in the third and Charlie Kronschnabel notched the fourth 18:55 into a four-goal second period.

"I got to too severe an angle, so I figured I had to get it closer to the middle and let it go," said Kronschnabel, who recorded his first career AHL point.

His goal put Iowa up 4-2, but Rockford pulled closer on Pascal Pelletier's goal 7:25 into the third and put several good shots on net in a frantic final 20 minutes.

"It got a little haywire at times, but that's experience," said Chops coach Gord Dineen, whose team put together its first four-goal second period of the season. "We got through it, David made some huge saves."

The Chops scored more than three goals for the first time in their past 11 games, but the final penalty kill may provide the biggest confidence boost.

"The guys who were out there were so smart about getting in the shot lanes," Dineen said.

Even if Evans was without a stick for about 30 seconds of the last stand.

"To get the job done - it wasn't that pretty, but we kept them off the board and got the points," Evans said.

KILLING TIME: Including Tuesday's 6-for-6 showing on the penalty kill, Iowa has held opponents scoreless in 15 of their past 16 power-play chances.
