DETULLEO DELIVERS

K-Wings Captain Glenn Detulleo Topples Lumberjacks with Overtime Tally

Mike Modugno-Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

January 17, 2009

Muskegon, MI – The Muskegon Lumberjacks’ comeback attempt came to a sudden end in sudden death as Glenn Detulleo scored at 2:32 of overtime to give the Kalamazoo Wings a riveting 5-4 win at L.C. Walker Arena Saturday night.

Detulleo’s skate-off goal was gift-wrapped by linemate Anthony Battaglia, who stole a Lumberjacks pass near the Muskegon net and quickly centered for the K-Wings’ captain. The sudden victory was Kalamazoo’s second in four nights, as Rob Jarvis ended the Wednesday home game against Flint in similar fashion.

In a development that surprised exactly no one, these West Michigan rivals started the game with back-to-back fights. Four seconds in, Muskegon’s Alex Lamontagne squared off with Bryan Jurynec of Kalamazoo in a fairly even battle that ended with Lamontagne headed to the locker room with a bloodied nose. Just one second later, Frank Littlejohn and Blair Stayzer matched fists in a bout that included two knockdowns, one for each combatant.

Once the teams decided to play a little hockey, it was the K-Wings enjoying the better chances in the first half of the period. Lumberjacks’ goaltender Clayton Pool was equal to the task, though, as he turned the visitors away despite multiple point-blank opportunities.

When Frank Littlejohn (16th) chipped a loose puck into the Kalamazoo goal at 7:46, it seemed the K-Wings would be fortunate to escape the opening frame down just one score.

But with the ‘Jacks pressing for a 2-0 lead late in the period, Mark Nebus picked up the puck at center, deked around a defender and dished to an open Tommy Lange on the left wing. Lange (14th) ripped a hard wrist shot past Pool’s glove from 15 feet to tie the score at 17:57. Rick Cleaver got the secondary assist on the highlight reel play by Nebus.

The offensive action pickup considerably in the second, led by an early pair of Kalamazoo tallies. At 4:24, John Miller (2nd) finished a tidy tic-tac-toe passing play by dumping the puck into an open net from in front. Detulleo and Battaglia were the first two links in that goal-scoring chain.

Just over six minutes later, Nebus (20th) took a long lead pass from Jason Robinson, looked off the goalie and scored through the five-hole for a 3-1 K-Wings advantage.

The tide flowed in the other direction after Robin Bouchard (2nd) scored on his own rebound at 12:19. During four-on-four action three minutes later, Bouchard (3rd) picked up his second of the game on a one-timer from the left circle set up by Todd Robinson.

Late in the second, the ‘Jacks’ Luke Stauffacher was forced to slash Battaglia in order to deny the K-Wings a prime scoring chance. The visitors would cash in on the resulting power play on a screen shot from the left point taken by defenseman Rod Aldoff (6th). Pool never saw the puck until he fished it out of his net because the K-Wings had two players stationed in front.

With just under seven minutes left in the third period the Lumberjacks got a man-advantage goal of their own off the stick of Adam Bartholomay (5th). Stauffacher made the tying marker happen by charging down the right side and centering the puck for a charging Bartholomay, who finished the play through Joel Martin’s legs.

Martin would redeem himself at 14:21 by stoning Muskegon’s Robinson on a penalty shot attempt. Robinson attempted to get Martin to open the five-hole, but the Kalamazoo goaltender closed it down just in time to keep the score at 4-all.

The game went to overtime, but the Muskegon comeback dreams vanished abruptly when Battaglia stole an attempted ‘Jacks breakout pass and slid a cross-crease pass to Detulleo (12th), who make no mistake in burying the game-winning goal.

Battaglia, Detulleo and Nebus each had two-point evenings for the victorious visitors, who remained the only team in the IHL to be undefeated beyond regulation play. The K-Wings are now 6-0 in overtime/shootout games.

KALAMAZOO WINGS DOWN MUSKEGON LUMBERJACKS IN OVERTIME

Kalamazoo Gazette Staff Reports

Saturday January 17, 2009
Fort Wayne at Kalamazoo

MUSKEGON -- For the first time in almost a year, the Kalamazoo Wings won at L.C. Walker Arena with a 5-4 overtime win against the Muskegon Lumberjacks Saturday night -- and they did it in a nail-biting fashion.

With the scored tied 4-4 and 5:39 left in regulation, Todd Robinson, Muskegon's leading point-getter, was awarded a penalty shot, which goalie Joel Martin stopped.

Just 2:32 into the 4-on-4 overtime, Anthony Battaglia stole the puck behind the net and fed K-Wings captain Glenn Detulleo, who buried the game-winner past goalie Clayton Pool.

"It was really a team effort," K-Wings coach Nick Bootland said. "Everyone contributed, top to bottom. We have to score by committee and that's what we did."

Ten of the K-Wings' 12 forwards earned points, but the two who didn't provided an instant spark for the team.

Just four seconds into the game, the K-Wings' Bryan Jurynec and Musekgon's Alex Lamontagne dropped the gloves, with the Lumberjack leaving to ice with a cut on his face.

Just one second later, Frank Littlejohn and Blair Stayzer started swinging.

"The fights gave us some big momentum boosts early," Bootland said. "They showed the guys we were ready to go."

Tommy Lange, John Miller, Mark Nebus and Rod Aldoff (power play) also scored for the K-Wings (23-14-0-0), who remain in second place in the International Hockey League.

With the Fort Wayne Komets' 4-1 win at Port Huron Saturday night, the K-Wings are now just three points behind the league-leading Icehawks.

Littlejohn, Robin Bouchard (2 goals) and Adam Bartholomay (power play) scored for Muskegon (20-10-3-1).

JACKS FALL TO WINGS IN OT

Ron Rop | Muskegon Chronicle

January 17, 2009

MUSKEGON - The extra curricular activities took all of five seconds to get out of the way.

From there, the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Kalamazoo Wings locked up for an intense game that wasn't decided until Glenn Detulleo scored 2:32 into overtime in the Wings' 5-4 victory on Saturday night. The highly entertaining game, played on snowy, windy night in Muskegon, attracted 2,917 spectators to L.C. Walker Arena.

For those who arrived even a couple of seconds late, they missed the fireworks.

When the puck hit the ice to start the game, Muskegon's Alex Lamontagne and Kalamazoo's Bryan Jurynec dropped the gloves for a fight. One second after play resumed, Lumberjack Frank Littlejohn and Wing Blair Stayzer did the same thing.
From there, it was more than 60 minutes of entertaining, high energy hockey between two bitter rivals.

"It was a good one point," said Ramsay, whose earned one point for reaching overtime. "Anytime you're down a goal in the third period and get one point, that's good.

"It was disappointing in the way we lost it," said Ramsay.

On the decisive final play, Lumberjack Adam Bartholomay turned the puck over to Kalamazoo's Anthony Battaglia, who found Detulleo in front of the net for a wide open goal.

During regulation, Littlejohn opened the scoring in the first period and Kalamazoo's Tommy Lange tied it. The visitors gained the upper hand in the second period on goals by John Miller and Mark Nebus, but in the span of three minutes, Muskegon's Robin Bouchard scored two goals to tie the game.

Kalamazoo regained a one-goal lead late in the period when Rod Aldoff's wrist shot through a screen ended up behind Lumberjack goaltender Clayton Pool. That power-play goal game at 18:57.

The Lumberjacks evened the score at 13:07 of the final period when Luke Stauffacher fried a cross pass to the left wing where Bartholomay whacked it in for his fifth goal of the season and a tie game.

A minute later, Muskegon's Todd Robinson was awarded a penalty shot after getting taken down on a breakaway. Wing goaltender Joel Martin closed up the 5-hole and made the stop on the league's leading scorer.

Muskegon never did generate any scoring chances in overtime as the Wings had the only three shots.

"We can play better than this," said Ramsay, whose team would have taken over second place in the league with a victory. "Every time we play Kalamazoo, it's intense, just as it was tonight."
