HOGS LATE PUSH FALLS SHORT, ROCKFORD FALLS 4-2

01/13/2009

IceHogs unbeaten streak ends at six in first ever loss to San Antonio (5-1-0-2)

Rockford, Ill.- The combination of wingers Jack Skille and Pascal Pelletier is quickly becoming one of the most lethal in the American Hockey League, but the Rockford IceHogs couldn't pull off a win against the San Antonio Rampage on Tuesday at the Rockford MetroCentre.

Skille scored first for Rockford at 15:23 in the second frame. Pascal Pelletier was credited with an assist. Then at 8:08 in the third period, Skille found Pelletier to make the score 3-2 on a long 5-on-3 for the IceHogs. Danny Groulx was credited with the assist.

"We have to show up for the full 60 minutes, not just the last half like we did tonight," Skille said. "In the first period and first half of the second period, we were just kind of slow and then they scored a goal and it was somewhat of a wake-up call."

But that was all the offense the IceHogs could muster after San Antonio took a 3-0 lead to start the game. The Rampage took advantage of their first two power plays to take an early lead. In the first, Joel Perrault picked the corner of the goal on a power play at 3:28 in the first period. Dylan Reese and David Spina were credited with the assists.

"Tonight was an opportunity to get two points and we let it slip through our hands," Skille said. "They're obviously a better team than the last time and they took it to us. Kudos to them."

In the second frame, Spina pushed the puck under Corey Crawford just 18 seconds into the power play and 37 seconds into the period to take a 2-0 lead. Perrault and Chad Kolarik had the helpers.

Then Alex Bourret added an insurance marker at 12:45 in the second with help from Derek Nesbitt and Reese.

Perrault added an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left in the game.

Crawford took a rare regulation loss with 25 saves, while Josh Tordjman had 20 saves to bring his record to 14-14-1 after starting the season 1-10-1. Rockford's power play converted on one of five opportunities, while San Antonio was 2-for-2 on the man advantage.

RAMPAGE ROCK ICEHOGS 4-2

01/13/2009

ROCKFORD, ILL - Sub zero temperatures did not stop the red-hot Rampage from winning their third straight on the road, claiming a 4-2 win in Rockford Tuesday at the MetroCentre. San Antonio built a 3-0 second period lead before the IceHogs closed to within a goal, but Joel Perrault scored his third empty netter of the season to close the show.

Perrault also got it started for San Antonio in the first when he scored his fifth goal of the season 3:28 into the game on the man advantage.

Then 37 seconds into the second period David Spina extended his points streak to seven games with a power-play goal and 2-0 Rampage lead. Later in the period, Alex Bourret extended it to 3-0 at the 12:45 mark

Rockford finally broke through with 4:37 left in the second when Jack Skille scored his 15th of the season to make it 3-1. The IceHogs crept even closer in the third when Skille took advantage of a five-on-three power play to find Pascal Pelletier backdoor for a 3-2 deficit with nearly twelve minutes remaining in regulation.

The Rampage were able to hold off two more IceHogs power plays and Perrault scored his second goal of the game with eleven seconds remaining and San Antonio held on for a 4-2 win.

Josh Tordjman stopped 20-22 shots to earn the win and Corey Crawford took the loss allowing three goals on 28 shots. The Rampage went 2-2 on the power play and held Rockford to 1-5 on the man advantage.

Perrault enjoyed a 3-point night adding an assist, while Spina and Dylan Reese also tallied multi-point games. Spina added an assist and Reese had two helpers including one on the first power play.

San Antonio has won 4 of 5 while Rockford lost for the first time in 6 games.

ICEHOGS FALL 4-2 to SAN ANTONIO

By Reed Schreck-RRSTAR.COM

Posted Jan 13, 2009

ROCKFORD — Discussing his team’s penalty kill after Tuesday morning’s practice, Rockford IceHogs coach Bill Peters said his team has been allowing too many scores on first shots.

Little did he know, or want to see, how prophetic he would be. That’s exactly what happened in a 4-2 evening loss to the last-place-but-surging San Antonio Rampage.

On Rockford’s first two infractions, San Antonio notched first-shot tallies that took all of 41 (Joel Perrault) and 18 seconds (David Spina).

“We’ve talked about it for sure,” said Peters, whose team entered the game next to last in AHL penalty killing. “It’s now a mental hurdle. It’s as much mental as it is physical.

“It’s definitely an issue, though.”

Stuck in a 1-0 hole after one period and 3-1 after the second stanza, the IceHogs were facing long odds. They’re now 0-7-0-2 trailing after one and 0-10-0-3 trailing after two this season, which just reached the midway point.

After Alex Bourret made it 3-0 at 12:45 of the second session, Rockford’s Jack Skille blasted the puck from the right side into the left corner at 15:23, assisted by Pascal Pelletier.

Pelletier’s short angle, 5-on-3 power-play shot eluded goalie Josh Tordjman at 8:03 of the third to cut it to 3-2. With IceHogs goalie Corey Crawford pulled for an extra attacker, Perrault iced the game with an empty-netter at 19:49.

“We weren’t into it mentally the first half of the game,” said Skille, who has a point on Rockford’s last five goals. “We showed our character the last half, when we started coming back and playing well.

“But it was another case of too little too late.”

“I thought it was a little bit of a comeback,” Peters said. “But we looked like a real mentally tired team. We made mistakes we typically don’t make. Everything was a struggle.”

The Rampage began the season2-17-0-1, but since are 14-5-0-0 to stand 16-25-0-1 now. Rockford (21-15-0-4, 46 points) had its six-game unbeaten stretch (5-0-0-1) end as it fell to the last West Division team it was unbeaten against in regulation at 5-0-0-2.

“Our line – me, (Evan) Brophey and Pelletier – had a lot of chances the whole night,” Skille said. “I missed the net a couple times when I should have bore down and hit the net.

“What we had to do now as a team is bring it for 60 minutes.”
