CRAWFORD, ICEHOGS HOLD OFF TORONTO 1-0

01/10/2009

Rockford extends point streak (5-0-0-1) to six straight games

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs end the week with five out of six points on the heels of a 1-0 win over the Toronto Marlies at the Rockford MetroCentre. The first period goal by IceHogs winger Evan Brophey was enough for Rockford to escape with their second win in two days.

"I'm very pleased with how we've played in the last seven or eight games," said Rockford coach Bill Peters. "We had a little bit of a hiccup in Grand Rapids and recovered from it. Since then we've been quite good."

Since allowing five goals in the first period on Wednesday, the IceHogs have given up just one goal to Chicago and Toronto.

"We're taking care of the details and we have a group of forwards that are very committed defensively away from the puck," Peters said. "That's made all the difference in the world."

After earning a hard-fought 3-1 win against the Chicago Wolves a night before, the IceHogs hung on to another slim lead on Saturday. Corey Crawford put together a strong performance in his first shut out of the 2008-09 season. The netminder has allowed just three goals in his last 160:00 minutes of ice time. On Saturday, Crawford had 24 saves.

"We talked to both goalies and we want to go with the situation where if a guy gets hot we're going to ride him," Peters said. "And were in the middle of doing that with Corey right now."

On the other side of the ice, Justin Pogge put together a strong performance in the third game of Toronto's nine-game road swing. The puckstopper had 21 saves.

Brophey was the only one to solve Pogge. The center jumped on a breakaway with Pascal Pelletier and finished off a rebound by Pelletier's shot at 5:20 in the first period.

"(Brophey)'s a good player," said Peters. "I didn't see him last year, but the people in the organization tell me he's taken a big step. He's got what the game is all about. He's got great speed and he's a powerful player."

Jack Skille was also credited with an assist. The helper gives Skille seven points (3g-4a) in his last four games. Toronto went 0-for-4 on the power play and held Rockford to 0-for-6 on the man advantage.

ICEHOGS BLANK MARLIES

January 10, 2009

Marlies Come Close In Final Minute, But Can't Find Tying Goal

(ROCKFORD, IL) – As they say, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Despite a valiant effort in the final minutes, the Marlies were unable to muster up a tying goal, as they were shutout 1-0 by the IceHogs in Rockford on Saturday night.

Evan Brophey had the only goal of the game just over five minutes into the first period, after finding a loose puck on the side of the goal, and beating Justin Pogge who had no chance on the play.

Toronto had a few scrambles in front of the net in the second and third period, but were unable to slip the puck past Corey Crawford. With the net empty in the final minute of the third, Jiri Tlusty had a chance in tight, but Crawford made the save. Jack Skille was racing back up the ice for the empty net, but Anton Stralman was called for holding in the race. Kris Newbury was also given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the same play, giving Rockford a 5-on-3 power play with 46 seconds left in the game.

Earlier in the day, Chicago and Columbus made a trade that sent Michael Blunden to Syracuse for Adam Pineault. Due to the weather and the travel, Pineault showed up to play the third period for Rockford.

Crawford made 24 saves for the shutout, while Pogge blocked 21 shots.

ICEHOGS' GOALIE STONEWALLS MARLIES

By Reed Schreck-RRSTAR.COM

Jan 10, 2009

ROCKFORD —
The Rockford IceHogs took a little longer to score Saturday night than on Friday. And they didn’t score after their initial success.

With Corey Crawford in net, it didn’t matter.

Crawford registered his first shutout of the season and seventh of his pro career in Rockford’s 1-0 victory over the Toronto Marlies.

Combined with his performance in Friday’s 3-1 win over Chicago and his solid work in relief on Wednesday at Grand Rapids, Crawford has saved 95 of the last 97 shots directed at him.
Friday’s night game was a one-goal affair until a late empty-netter.

That means Crawford basically was working with no more than a one-goal lead in back-to-back nights.

“The biggest thing is not to think,” said Crawford, who made 24 saves. “Just focus on each shot and look at the small picture.

“They (the Marlies) maybe had a few good chances at the end, but our defense played great tonight.”

Evan Brophey cashed in on Pascal Pelletier’s centering pass at 5:20 of the first period on his team’s second shot on net. Jack Skille also assisted.

“We got off to a pretty good start,” said Brophey after his ninth tally of the season. “We had some good chances right away and buried the one.”

The rest of the evening, witnessed by 3,900 fans at the MetroCentre, belonged to Crawford and his counterpart, Toronto goalie Justin Pogge.

“Craw stood tall in net,” Brophey said.

“Craw was outstanding,” said IceHogs head coach Bill Peters after his 21-14-1-3 team ran its unbeaten streak to six (5-0-0-1). “Obviously, he made some big saves in the third period. He’s on a roll, and he’s a very good goaltender.”

Toronto (20-15-0-4, 44) pulled Pogge with 1:15 to play. But Skille drew a holding penalty on Anton Stralman at 19:14, and the Marlies’ Kris Newbury was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct while play was stopped.

“They’ve got some good players on their roster,” Brophey said. “We had to bring our ‘A’ game.”

MARLIES DROP GOALIES DUEL

By STAFF

11th January 2009

Justin Pogge blinked once and that is all the Rockford Icehogs needed last night to beat the visiting Toronto Marlies 1-0 in an American Hockey League game in Illinois.

Pogge was beaten by former Ontario Hockey League star Evan Brophey at 5:20 of the first period before he and IceHogs' Corey Crawford shut the door the rest of the way. The Marlies outshot Rockford 24-22.

The loss gave Toronto a 1-1-1 record in the first three games of its nine-game road swing.
