Booking issue causes Mustangs to reschedule road game
January, 8, 2009
A booking issue at an arena in Midland caused the Southeast Texas Mustangs to find a new opponent for tonight's scheduled road game.
But in an American Basketball Association that played less than 39 percent of its games last season, that's hardly unusual.
Instead, the Mustangs will play tonight against the Mississippi Blues in Jackson, Miss. The Mustangs (9-1) played Wednesday at Mississippi and won 114-96 for their eighth straight victory.
The Mustangs had been set to play Friday against the West Texas Whirlwinds but learned Monday that arena repair work would prevent the game from being played, Mustangs coach Steve Tucker said.
No schedule appeared on the Whirlwinds team Web site. Last season, the Whirlwinds played nine games, none after Dec. 22, 2007.
The Whirlwinds were one of 17 ABA teams that folded or left the league in midseason last season, according to OurSportsCentral.com, a Web site that tracks minor league sports.
The Whirlwinds have played four games this season, according to another team's Web site. The Houston Takers' Web site tracks league standings. The league's Web site, ABAlive.com, does not track league standings.
The Whirlwinds are scheduled to play the Mustangs three more times this season with two of those games to be in Beaumont.
The Mustangs next scheduled home game is Thursday against the Texas Fuel, a San Antonio-based team.
Credit where it's due.
At least the Mustangs were able to reschedule and had a willing opponent to
host them.
Where it's not?
Why call it a "booking issue" then go into arena repairs as the culprit? They
could be considered the same, yet "booking issue" still leans more towards
another event taking place the same night (and not construction).
With the Whirlwinds on on off season last year. I can't help but feel this isn't
going to be their last cancellation.
The Whirlwinds have played four games this season
...but if a tree falls in the forest and nobodys around to hear it.
