I'll see if I can get some more scores. A look at these standings show five replacement teams. They're taking the place of Sacramento, San Diego, Washington and Alaska, all of which are done for this season, and Salt Lake City, which has been completely removed from the schedule. I've been told that SLC has been not been communicating and has at least one obligation that needs to be cleared up if they want to return to play.

That is ridiculous. Aren't they over here to play basketball? What else did they have going on that they needed to do?

And the condition of Elwood's car after the final chase bears a striking resemblance to the rest of the ABA this year as well...

So has anyone on the board actually seen any of these games? It would be nice to get a full report of what a West Coast ABA game looks like. I might have to go see the Push/Fury game this Sunday just to see how bad things are.

There are some pictures of the Beijing games at their Chinese site:

You can get some sense of the crowds.

The Buzz updated their site to included two new scores:

01/02/09 San Fernando Stars 106 Maywood Buzz 137
01/03/09 San Fernando Stars 109 Maywood Buzz 126

Also, LV beat IE 5Linx 158-157 on 1/10. Beijing was originally scheduled to play at LV on the 10th.

Beijing will now take a 7-10 game road trip through Texas and the Midwest, presumably at the expense of their west coast commitments. I think it's clear that what Beijing wants, Beijing gets.

Pointless, pointless, pointless, I know, but if the league had a schedule released prior to the season, and if all 40 teams listed at that time actually started the season with the intention of playing a 32 game schedule, then we would already have reached the mid-point (probably) of the season. If you consider the original Nashville schedule, their 16th game was on the 4th, so by that date there should have been 320 games scheduled. So far there have been 92 games played with 2 forfeits. There also at least 16 games for which I have no score but are counted in records released by various teams. And there’s the 22 games played against the CBA which theoretically would have been played against ABA teams (I only show 4 games rescheduled, but who knows.)

So, 91 (played) plus 8 (missing scores) plus 11 (CBA) equals 110 games, which works out to be 34% played. Theoretically.

Is it possible that a firm schedule is not being produced willfully so that they cannot be held to an accurate games played metric?

There has been some speculation that's the case, but I know a league schedule was being worked on before the ABA COO spent some time in jail. After that, the sked was pieced out to several team owners, and I don't believe the one in charge of compiling the whole thing ever did it.

Man, I hope not because there is no way he’d get any owner to pay up and play next year.

Again, I’m about to overstate the obvious, but because the ABA’s only real revenue stream is the reservation fee it needs to walk that line where enough teams fold in order to bring in enough new teams/fees to fund the next season. But they need to fail because they were poorly managed, and not because the league’s business model proved to be wrong. Clearly the model has been proven wrong.

This year has easily been the worst. While other years have seen more teams fold or simply not play, this year there is no sense of a central, league-wide organization. In the past I’ve imagined that Joe Newman was frantically on the phone, trying to motivate or threaten teams into playing their games, or the games of folded teams. I don’t get that sense this year. He seems to have delegated the operations out to the teams and absolved himself (and the league) of any responsibility.

I don’t think we’ll see the league next year, at least in its present form.

I am getting more and more convinced that he'll sell franchises year after year until the NBA yanks the name from him or he is physically unable to sell.

Joe is like Jack Bauer, James Bond and Jason Bourne all rolled into one.........

Seriously, we've seen Stallone climb mountains in a blizzard with no shirt, Shwarzenegger run across open fields with 40 guys shooting machine guns at him and he's pegging off guys with a handgun, Macgyver building a plutonium 237 warm fission weapon out of a bic pen and a pair of Oakley sunglasses, Jack Bauer just about to hear something important to break the case before the guy gets killed, Bond driving a Lotus Esprit underwater and Jason Bourne beating up 7 armed US Marines in a small room but nothing Hollywood can dream up compares to Joe.

The man will keep answering the phone, keep selling, keep this continuing downward spiral of a league alive.

Its actually a feat of business acumen that defies all known logic.
