Ordinarily, I like to keep all of the Gwizz stuff in its own thread, but this deserves stand-alone recognition:

"Team have 24 times to try to get it right" says Embry Malone
January 6, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA) Georgia Gwizzlies
"I have always had good players over the past 5 years, but a lot of players are not team players" Georgia Gwizzlies Coach Embry Malone. The ABA Gwizzlies are on a record pace 0-6 start with 24 more scheduled games until March 15.The team will travel to North Dakota next month to play CBA Minot and start at home on January 19th."This team reminds me of the WBA Anderson Heat team that included NBA camp prospect Jarrett Oliver" say Malone."Great talent" Detroit Piston Harold Ellis said about the Heat team when they played Ellis WBA Rome team in 2006.I teach that pro basketball consist of three things;1.Defense2.Pick an Roll 3.Mismatch."On this level,no matter how good you think you are, if you don't execute those three things you want be successful" states Malone. To date Malone is one of the few active coaches in the minors that have coached games in the WBA,ABA,CBA and SEBL.After the ABA season he will be looking at the NBA Head coaching vacancies.
I'll be looking at them as well - in the newspaper, just like Mr. Malone.
In fact, I'll be looking at supermodels, too, in the upcoming SI Swimsuit issue.
And Embry, Minot has already started their CBA schedule, so if you ARE traveling there "next month" - leave your team behind, 'cause they ain't playing.

"Team have 24 times to try to get it right" Get what right, Embry? A correctly worded press release? Sorry, ain't gonna happen.
Let's see...You're 0-6. Even if you win one game and finish 1-29 (would he say they would make the playoffs, like he did last season?) people will still say that the 2008 Detroit Lions are a better basketball team than the Gwizz.
"The ABA Gwizzlies are on a record pace 0-6 start" Nothing says "I am an NBA caliber coach" better than a winless record...

Hey Embry... generally when you advertise that your team is on a "record pace" you want it to be a positive record, not six straight losses.

Yup, Embry has gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off the deep end. He will be looking at NBA vacancies? For what, to see what jobs he wouldn't qualify for if he was the last coach on Earth?
Wow, just wow.

What a co-incidence!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
I'm looking for an NBA coaching position as well.
I'm hoping for Toronto or Seattle. I've always like Toronto. Its a fun city. Seattle has that west coast feel..............oh ya. Seattle is gone. Ok well maybe Portand Trail Blazers.
Maybe for 10k I can get a Joe-reference.
He's one of the few coaches to coach in the ABA, WBA, CBA and SEBL....and I just went and unclogged my toilet....
What's the bigger accomplishment?

Looks like Embry's not taking criticism very well.
http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3760794
I'm amused when the question of my experience and background as I position myself to apply for a Head coaching position in the NBA this summer.
Not as amused as all of us are after reading some of your stream-of-consciousness press releases.
Playing in the NBA will not get you the job, because if it did,Kareem and my late dear friend Dennis Johnson would have been hired.
Embry - pick up a copy of The Peter Principle, where you discover that in a hierarchy, every individual rises to his level of incompetence. Oh wait... you've gone way past your level, haven't you?
I'm from the city of Louisville and the great state of kentucky.
Commonwealth. Kentucky's a Commonwealth.
In the late 1970's played with Dennis Johnson, attend, taught coached at Pepperdine University of Malibu,Southwestern junior college,Clearview school of Beverly Hills,California,Southern Poly Tech in Marietta. Interned at Burbank NBC Studio, coached in the famed California summer pro league and was a candidate for United States Congress in 2002 here in Atlanta.
None of those attributes qualifies you to coach on the NBA level. Interning at the NBC Studios only means that at some point you probably had to go get Jay Leno's car from the studio parking lot after the Tonight Show finished taping. And being a candidate for public office doesn't mean you got elected or even considered as a viable candidate. Howard Stern ran for governor of New York, Mary Carey tried to become governor of California, and don't even get me started on Lyndon LaRouche.
Who's who in the World,America,South for the past 20 years. My personal references list would consist of eight college presidents, two retired NBA well-known front office personnel and countless retires NBA players.
Surprisingly, none of those references would include a grammar instructor.
In concluding ,one of my last conversation I had with Dennis was that he really want me in the NBA,Dennis felt I had paid my dues in life and the minors. By Embry Malone
Embry... do me a favor. Stop using Dennis Johnson as some sort of autonomous endorsement from beyond the grave. If I had a dollar for every time you used Dennis Johnson's name in one of your press releases, I could buy an ABA franchise and still have enough money left over to pay the players on opening night.

Just for the record, when did Embry coach in the CBA, or is getting his ass kicked by the Miners in a "Interleague Challenge" Game count as CBA coaching?
Much as I hate to say it, could Embry have been worse with the Knicks than Isiah?

Preeths: was this a press release or an e-mail? I love his press release responses to message board comments. He just needs to sign up and press reply.
He also finally confirmed his race for congress... but fails to mention that he raised zero dollars in his campaign.
I love it.
Lesson number 1: Learn to know the difference between a press release and a response on a message board. You look like a jackass...
Anybody in the NBA who would considering hiring you would take one look at your "media releases" on OurSportsCentral and determine that you are right at the level that you should be at.
I know coaches who were assistants for Dennis Johnson in the d-league that are still paying their dues in that league. He had glowing things to say about them too. You should have used your connections to get in the d-league back then...unfortunately, it is too late now...

Embry - since you are obviously reading this board (or someone is telling you what is on here):
Pleas re-read your message. If you can honestly say it is professional and should stand as is, then you have only reinforced the notion that you are unfit to move to a higher-profile league.
Perceptions and first impressions count, Embry, and were you to submit a resume in the writing style used by your team's press releases, I can assure you that no legitimate organization would even consider you for an interview, much less a job. Unless you start your own company (as you did) or were to have a friend give you a position, you would find the going very rough.
Joe Newman - among his myriad faults and failings - has been an enabler to you for far too long. Rather than insist that your organization get professional help with its PR and media relations, he has allowed the Gwizzlies to continue to be a laughingstock among basketball fans and others on the web (and seeing as none of your releases ever see the ink of a printed newspaper, the web is the only place to find your linguistic debacles).
Outside of your family table (which based upon your website, is your entire ownership group), the Gwizzlies have become a joke and a symbol of the lack of professionalism in the American Basketball Association. You are the coach of a team that won a handful of games last year, and has yet to win this year - including absolute dominations on the court when paired against another league. You lack organizational structure, the local media has no use for your team, and the continuous stream of indecipherable babble with your name on it further lessens any credibility your team - and unfortunately, by association, you - may have had.
The NBA is a pipe dream, Mr. Malone. There are dozens of candidates each year that are passed over by NBA teams that have resumes and organizational abilities that far overshadow yours. It's nice to dream, but reality is a cold splash of water in the face sometimes. Grab a towel.
The (Gwinnett) Georgia Gwizzlies; named for a typographical error.
Who knew back then that the typo would be the most comprehensible thing the team would ever release.

Despite all of his, and his organization's myriad faults, you've got to admit the Gwiz make a colorful presence in the ABA as well as the world of sports.
Like the ABA itself, if the team was a healthy, viable operation, we wouldn't have a whole lot to talk about except wins and losses, player moves, coaching changes and the rest of the stuff you usually talk about with a sports league.

I thought so. I wonder who else is on the distribution list and how confused they get when (if?) they read these responses.
You have to be nuts if you believe someone is going to look at your losing record (to say nothing of your PR skills) in the ABA and even consider you for an NBA job.

Whatever his faults, I believe Mr. Malone is doing his best. Let's not judge him solely on the quality of his communication.

Having seen him upclose, I will say he has passion for the game. I am not sure his coaching record will get him looks in the NBA (actually quite sure it will garner the opposite reaction), but he is doing his best. That being said, he is certainly one of the most quoteable ABA personalities and I am glad to have him (even if for the wrong reasons).

Paul -
I agree Embry tries hard. I believe deep down that his heart is in the right place, and he truly wants to succeed.
But when he continues to make these amateurish comments - as the public voice and representative of his "professional" franchise and as a member of a "professional" league - it destroys any credibility he has.
And by not stepping in and demanding changes within the franchise, Joe is complicit in each of these releases as well.
Whatever his good intentions - and again, I do believe they are there - it is impossible to see them behind the barrage of bad grammar and spelling errors.

Sorry, can't do it...I've stated this many times...It's these kind of actions at the league level (ABA) and team level that are the downfall of minor league professional basketball. I was proud to be involved in minor league pro basketball because people took it seriously. Outside of the d-league....nobody takes minor league pro basketball seriously anymore. It's about as legitimate as the pickup basketball game down on the playground.

In as much is the problem with the ABA. Leaders are supposed to help lead.
Where are Joe and the rest of the league in helping edit these releases?
There has got to be some kind of accountability.
What if Embry were to send releases to local school districts inviting students
out to games? I perish the thought of how local superintendents, teachers,
and students could take this team seriously.
Whatever his good intentions - and again, I do believe they are there - it is impossible to see them behind the barrage of bad grammar and spelling errors.

The fact that the average spell check program does not blow up after reviewing this release is, indeed, progress.
Still wouldn't pass a third-grade grammar test, but it is Pulitzer-worthy by Gwizz standards.
Funny how Embry never issues a defensive release over the reaction here to his team's postings - the irony would be off the charts...

Depends on how he went about it. I remember once he went on about an
OSC release, then failed to make good on the retort (which included intentions
to actually play some scheduled games.)
One of the reasons I do have some respect for him is that he doesn't go on
into name calling, etc., when he feels we have hurt his feelings. Like some
certain CEO we know, has done.

I know Embry thinks if you have an NBA pedigree, you should get an NBA coaching job. There's 18 coaches in the minors with NBA experience that don't have NBA coaching jobs. Would you put him ahead of any of these guys (http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2009/1/11/715055/battle-of-the-minor-league)?

Derrick Rowland (Patroons-CBA) played in the NBA (Milwaukee Bucks), as did Donnie Boyce (Throwbacks-PBL), who spent two seasons with Atlanta.

I had Donnie, missed Rowland. Those two games games just didn't stand out to me. Thanks Chuck!
Had Donnie on one of my Dodge City teams in training camp...He was the last cut we made before the season, but he was a very nice guy just trying to keep playing and get paid back then. Glad to see him coaching.
