The Rhinos have been hibernating for the holidays but they're back.
The Prescott Valley-based American Basketball Association (ABA) club resumed its schedule Saturday night after a two-week break. The Rhinos tipped off down in Phoenix against the Fury for their first game since a home win - also against the Fury - Dec. 13.
The Rhinos are off to a 3-2 start in their inaugural season. And speaking more as a coach than a Grinch, head coach Orlando Woolridge doesn't favor such a long holiday break between games.
"For me I'm not particularly crazy about it because once you maintain a rhythm and then have two weeks off, the hardest thing is to get that rhythm back," Woolridge said Saturday night via a courtside phone interview a couple of hours before his team tipped off with the Fury.
"Unfortunately that's just the way it's set up in this league. Like I tell my guys, we've just got to work hard and get back in rhythm."
Saturday night's outing was the first of eight games for the Rhinos this month, according to the season schedule on the league's website. Eight more games follow in February before Arizona closes out at home March 5.
The schedule, though, has already seen its share of changes in the minor league and more could follow. Last month the Rhinos scrambled to meet the Fury after their previously scheduled opponent, the Maywood (Calif.) Buzz, canceled the trip to Prescott Valley.
The Rhinos' next scheduled home game, Jan. 20, is scheduled to feature the Los Angeles Push, but Woolridge hinted Saturday that that opponent, too, could change.
The first month of the season also included uncertainty about the Rhinos' home digs.
While the team originally negotiated to play its home games at Tim's Toyota Center, undetermined problems prevented a hardwood floor from arriving at the center already used for hockey and indoor football.
As a result, the Rhinos have been practicing at Bradshaw Mountain High School's east campus and playing games at the school's main campus.
"Until we can get that floor situation worked out, we're going to be right there at the east campus," Woolridge said Saturday.
In any event, the Rhinos are forging ahead. The ABA - which started in 2000 as an unaffiliated companion to the league's former namesake of the 1970s - has endured some league-wide struggles. Yet it's always been an outlet for players to play ball.
"I'm pleased with where we're going as a team," Woolridge said of his 12-player roster. "I think the guys are getting a better feel for what we're trying to do. The guys have had a little time off to rest their bodies."
